370Z Roadster Antenna

I would like to change the antenna. It's just plain ugly. What can I do to make it look better or have a shorter one yet still keeping a good reception?

Are there any roaster spoilers out there? I only found some for the coupe.

Joebarchuck 08-10-2010 04:57 PM

I saw another post here after some research and I just bought this: antenna

Zaggeron 08-10-2010 05:23 PM

Same one I bought.

Yeah looks much better than the phone line pole that comes standard...

I would love a nice spoiler though too.

BeachZTT 08-11-2010 06:58 AM

Same here after a recomendation from another member that had tested several.

Spoiler? DO IT!!! Spoiler Solutions FTW. I can not say how happy I am with this spoiler, the fit, and the paint. Everyone thinks that this was a factory installed item. More pics in my albums...

Looks great. I will look into the spoiler. Do them come painted?

Yep, they gauranteed a color match to the factory colors and I was skeptical because of the unique properties of the Black Cherry. The paint matched perfectly and is flawless.

I am not going to lie to you though, it was very difficult drilling holes in my brand new car. I got up at 5:30 in the morning after not being able to sleep knowing it was sitting in the living room waiting for holes to be drilled. My wife said "I am glad I was asleep!" I told her it was about a three hour install. One hour for the actual work and two hours to get over the nausea. :roflpuke2:

I still owe you guys an DIY write up but I just haven't had time. I will get to it. Subscribe to my spoiler link a few posts below and I will update that with a link when I do.

Congrats and enjoy!!!

Joebarchuck 08-11-2010 01:09 PM

Can't wait until you make the guide. I am also quite troubled about drilling holes in the car. Does that mean you have visible bolts in the trunk?

BeachZTT 08-11-2010 02:06 PM

Drilling the holes in the top of the trunk wasn't really the part that made me nervous. It was access holes in the trunk space. The way that you mark the actual holes is a no brainer. Marking the access holes is a bit more challenging because of the contoured sheet metal inside the lid. I lined them up visually and that worked out fine but I have another idea for marking them that I will publish in the DIY. The location is not hyper critical though because you are just sticking a 1/4" drive extension through it with a small socket.

There is a significant gap between the external and internal surface of the trunk lid. Two of the holes are behind the carpeted cover on the trunk lid. The other two holes just outside that cover. I used a couple of black interior button caps from the auto parts store with a small bead of silicone around them to cover/finish the holes. They look like they belong there and if I didn't tell you what they were, you probably wouldn't notice them. The most important thing will be to adequately seal the holes around the 4 bolts to ensure that no water/moisture can get in or around them.

That's great information. I am ordering the part in the next few days and will let you guys know how the installation goes.

You will love it. Changes the entire rear profile of the car.

I will try and get a full write up done before you have it. I don't have many pictures because it was about 100% humidity the morning that I did the install and as soon as I brought the camera outside the lens fogged. Took almost 20 minutes to normalize and, at that point, I wasn't waiting. :ughdance:

Thanks anything will be helpful.

the bricker 01-16-2011 04:01 PM

cujo, did you get the ant. from esr performance? they really had bad reviews. If not where did you get it? Iv got 2010 370z black beauty with too tall of ant.lol

Roadster Fan 01-30-2011 08:30 AM

Yeah... I'd be interested in knowing about performance and installation...

Have you noticed any decline in performance of this shorter antenna?
Was it easy to install?

Takes all of 30 seconds to install, and I actually saw an increase in the signal strength in my area

jlx 03-07-2011 12:24 AM

Stupid question but how do you take the factory antenna off in the first place? I tried unscrewing it but didn't want to force it too hard. Do I need to take off the cloth cover from inside the trunk? I searched for threads but couldn't find any in the DIY section, if there's a link please help post/PM, thanks

IDZRVIT 03-07-2011 06:30 AM

It unscrews from the outside. Just twist it a little harder.

Honda S2000 Antenna

All here seem to prefer the 3" JDM stubby, but I think I might prefer then 7" Honda S2000 antenna to replace my roadster's 11.5" OEM monstrocity. The S2000 antenna is promoted on eBay and elsewhere as a fit for the 370Z roadster. Is it? I'm particularly concerned about the base mount (is the diameter the same as the OEM mount?).

the bricker 03-22-2011 08:10 AM

vifferman, I got the one from ebay, you get like 3 sizes of little threaded rods, pick the one that fits the z, thread it in and screw it on! Your done!! 30 secs.

the bricker 03-22-2011 08:13 AM

V, I did get the 3 inch, you really dont even notice it, plus it doesnt wave in the wind, the 7 inch might a little?

I wasn't asking about the thread fit. My question is "does the 7" Honda S2000 antenna fit the 370Z in terms of the bottom diameter matching that of the 370Z's antenna base?" Again, I actually prefer the 7-inch S2000 shaft to the stubby 3-inch replacement that you and others seem to like. Hasn't anyone tried the Honda S2000 antenna? (would swear that it was mentioned in some earlier posts, but my search came up empty).

Jme370 03-22-2011 06:15 PM

I am almost 100% sure that the s2000 antenna fits as well as the stubby one. I was torn between the 2 as well. The Honda one looks more OEM than the 3" one but once I got the shorter, I liked the way it looked and left it at that.

Sizzle 03-31-2011 03:52 PM

So what's stopping me from removing the factory antenna, cutting it to the desired length, and gluing a black rubber nipple cap on the exposed end?

Seems like it would be a five minute mod and no expense...I never use AM/FM anyway so looks would trump reception for me.

Sorry Jme370, but contrary to your "almost 100%" confidence level, the Honda S2000 antenna is not a perfect fit for the 370ZR. Took delivery today, and (as I recall reading in an earlier post) the base of the S2000 antenna shaft is just slightly larger than the 370ZR's base mount. The overage is slight (just a millimeter or so), and I can live with it as the overall fit and appearance is a big improvement over Nissan's OEM monstrocity. Again, I much prefer this 7" antenna over the 3" stubby that others seem to prefer, and I'm hopeful that it may offer better AM/FM reception as well (will test and report the results at a later date).

Jme370 03-31-2011 05:10 PM

the 3" has terrible fm reception fyi....sorry about the s2000 antenna. it does thread on like i said...never had one so don't know about how it looks

Highway 03-31-2011 05:19 PM

I would much rather have the S2k antenna, as long as it still pulls in a decent reception.

IDZRVIT 03-31-2011 07:24 PM

My stubby antenna receives FM signals almost as good as the oem.

VTZ 03-31-2011 09:30 PM

Has anyone out there tried this antenna?

OEM Honda Short Antenna 370Z BMW Z3 Z4 Corolla Matrix - eBay (item 290540435978 end time Apr-30-11 15:47:23 PDT)

Not quite as short as the 3 inch stubby one but also doesn't look nearly as long as the huge OEM antenna. I didn't have very good luck myself with the 3 inch one that everyone has recommended. Mine broke during install. The top (i.e. the 3 inch shaft attached to the base) slips off so easily now.

This is the antenna that doesn't fit the base perfectly but does thread on and will have better reception than the 3" for sure.

Sizzle 04-02-2011 01:31 PM

So I cut my antenna today and added a vinyl screw cap. I used a set of wire cutters to cut the antenna, it was pretty easy. The screw cap is the smallest size I could find and that makes it a tight friction fit. Total cost $1.

Sizzle 04-02-2011 01:37 PM

...and the new length with a screw cap:

IDZRVIT 04-02-2011 03:04 PM

Now, that's not a bad DIY!

Sizzle 04-02-2011 03:38 PM

Thank you!

And since I took the pics earlier today, I was able to push the cap down further onto the stalk so it's flat now with no bump on top...not like someone will see that little detail from the back anyways though.

VTZ 04-03-2011 10:27 AM

Damn... that's nice! That looks great! I think I will do this myself as well. Couple questions? Where did you get the little vinyl screw cap? Also, to what length did you cut it? Has it hurt your FM reception? Nice DIY.

Sizzle 04-03-2011 12:12 PM

Thanks!

I chose a spot on the stalk that I thought looked good (it's around the three inch mark) and cut it there. I also chose the spot that would have a thick enough shaft left for the cap to be friction fitted. I guess it's really up to you where you chose to cut it according to your own taste.

Edit: I noticed looking at the pictures again that I made my cut right at the junction where the taper ends and the thin part of the stalk begins. That's easy enough to find :D

I got the cap at Lowe's. They are in the loose hardware section with bolts and screws etc. and come in bags of four pieces. There are four different sizes...unfortunately, the four sizes are also different colors with black being the smallest. The white caps are the next size up but then you would have to paint the cap to match. The black ones are very tight but they will go on if you work at it.

As for FM reception, I haven't been back to the car since I did the mod yesterday, I'll get back to you. I don't think it will affect it in the city at all however. Weaker, distant stations may not be as strong but local stations should be fine.

I'll take a picture of the antenna mounted as well.

Sizzle 04-03-2011 01:09 PM

So here's the pics of the antenna mounted:

Sizzle 04-03-2011 01:12 PM

and another:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5260/...9584812005.jpg

...nice rainy day here too :)

The FM reception was fine with local stations.

IDZRVIT 04-03-2011 04:50 PM

If I didn't know any better I would say it was oem. :tiphat:
