You're right, reception lessens with the size of the antenna (or none). Try it. Turn your radio on to what is NOT your strongest station. Then swap the antennas. You will hear a difference. Also notice the sound when swapping (i.e. you don't have ANY antenna). It will be even less.

is it that bad...?

If you are using satellite then it will work just fine. But for AM/FM you could see a decrease in reception depending on how far away from the station you are or the lay of the land.

Yup, same experience here...

Thankful to the previous owner that the antenna was replaced by a 7"-er. Not obnoxious looking at all and great reception

These things are really cheap. If you are using satellite they will work great, but if using FM you will get dropout in some areas.

I have this one & it looks great. It will fit the Z.Black Universal Billet Short Screw in Antenna 1 5" 35mm Toyota | eBay

Thanks, OldGuy. I actually LOOKED at my antenna last night, and it looks fine. Maybe it's not OEM, but it's not a whip, it's about a 7 inch long thing. By the way, have you changed the exhaust on your roadster? I would like a lower, better sound, but am also an Old Guy, and not into modding anymore, and I don't know the difference between resonated/nonresonated, etc. Fast intentions sounds like the way to go, but most of these threads are way over my expertise/interest level. And, I'm somewhat cheap.

Hi

No I haven't done anything with the exhaust. I really don't plan on messing with the exhaust any time soon. I'm like you & aren't planning on doing too many mods. I have installed a spoiler on the tail & think it looks great. I am right now working on painting my door handles to match the color of the car.

I may be an isolated case, I installed the stubby antenna from a recommend here on the board, there are areas in the city that I get zero reception which can suck but it's not a big deal since I usually listen to my phone anyway

Hi

Yes if you are listening to AM/FM then you will probably get dropout in some cases. I use satellite all the time & is probably the only way the stubby will work 100%.
If you only use the radio as a backup to your phone, then all is good. The stubby looks way better than the original.
