Clear wear strip on deck lid problem

Just thought I share my experience with the clear wear strip on our deck lids/ tonneau cover. My trip was pretty looking fairly average we I bought the car 18 months ago but really deteriorated just lately. I went to a place that does clear protectant/wraps etc on vehicles, called Altapac here in Oz to get a new one piece film fitted. The company is well known here and have a quite a good reputation. They wrapped my mates entire Z roadster in clear. Perhaps bit of an overkill but looks great.

The place rang me a back and said we have a problem, removing the existing Nissan film is damaging the paint, ie paint being removed with the film. I went back to the car and sure enough could see the very small section where they started the removal process with the heat gun.
Therefore, I need to get the entire deck lid panel repainted which I have now just done. Now I need to wait between 4-6 weeks for full paint cure as they will not offer warranty if done before then. Apparently chemicals in the new paint take some time to release out and so if covered up by a film layer could issues could result down the track.
So effectively I can’t use car during this time, or at least not with roof closed as that would damage the new paint.

Anyway, moral to the story-DO NOT WAIT until your clear wear strip is as bad as mine before getting it replaced.
First two pictures show what mine looked like.
I will post picture when new film is on. Still not sure if I will have entire lid done or just the standard area but most likely extend it a small to line up with the natural lines of the lid as they suggested.

Mine was like that and i had no problems getting it off...just heat gun, scraper, and tons of patience. Took me long time.... slowly peeling it off while applying heat. I also let it sit outside with top down in 90 degree heat for a few hours so the sun did majority of the work.
Wonder if they were rushing it....

I don’t think they rushed it,they are very experienced with these things and I had a good chat with the technician, he explained everything he did etc. Perhaps it is just that mine is a bit older than yours, coming up to 9 years plus it was quite badly cracked up. Anyway, looking forward to just having one big piece on it shortly

As promised had the new clear protection film put on the deck lid last Friday-very impressed, I could not even see it when I walked out. I ended up taking the film right to the rear edge of the panel so they could wrap it around and see no edge at all.
What an improvement on the ugly Nissan 3 piece product.
I guess the final test will be how long it lasts.

Do you happen to know what they used?

I was going to get a 6x60 strip of the 3m VVivid "paint protection" vinyl and just make a DIY strip, but after seeing yours, I cant settle for that now lol. That looks amazing.

It's fantastic doing the whole panel, you simply do not know it's there at all. Obviously there is contact/movement involved in our application unlike the general purpose uses of stone chip protection etc so just need to wait and see how long it lasts-so far so good. :D

I think I'm gonna buy some cheap paint protection film and do it this weekend, mine looks terrible. I thinking about doing a 12 in strip all the way across. Or maybe I'll just spend like 50 to 70 bucks for enough to do the whole lid. It looks super easy to do when watching YouTube videos hahaha ahhh hopefully I don't tear all my hair out and completely fail, then bring it to a pro next week😅

I have a Pearl White 2016 Roadster with the same problem. I was originally referred by the local dealership to a shop that gave me a price of $800 to replace using the Nissan after market strips.

I then ordered the Nissan aftermarket strips directly for $180 and they were blue. I returned them as I was also wary of being able to work out all of the potential bubbles.

I researched all of the local detail shops and ended up bringing the car to Tint World for an estimate which came in at $400.
Pricey but the material is durable, UV resistant and has a 10 year guarantee. The final outcome was flawless, virtually invisible and with absolutely no bubbles. The car is now beautiful with the top down!

I’m probably going to have to pay a shop. I previously tried removing my dried / cracked liner with a plastic putty knife and a credit card. It didn’t go well. I took some time off, bought an adhesive removal wheel and tried again tonight. It’s still not going well. Ugh.

Yep, looks a bit like mine. I think we left it too long to replace/ remove without damaging the paint. As you can see in my posts I needed to get entire decklid panel repainted before covering the entire lid with the clear protectant. Cost a bit of money but final result is better than the factory look with all those shitty edges showing on their 3 piece design.

My faith is not totally lost after I spent another 30 min tonight with another method. A bit scary, but I used a metal putty knife at a controlled angle and pressure, then cleaned it up with my adhesive removal wheel. I tried a plastic putty knife, but the edge was bending and dulling in <1min. I only slipped once and knicked the clear coat, but have learned my lesson. It’s going to take me 3-4 hours all in with a good post-wax, but I like the prospect more than a full repaint.
