Default Ridiculous trade-in appraisal...

Has anybody else tried to trade in their Z? I have a 2009 Base w. Sport 6MT with 10,600 miles in excellent condition. I was at an Infiniti dealer in VA and initially got offered 21k for my car!! I was insulted and they then offered me 1500 more...and this was for "excellent" condition according to them too. Blue book value is 26,900 in good condition. I know its hard to get blue book value for a trade but seriously, lowballed almost 6k!? Has anybody else had experiences trading in their Z or does anybody know any dealers in NoVa. that actually give blue book value or close to? Thanks.

Selling it to a private party is almost the best way to sell your car.
Going to trade in your car normally results in you dropping your Pants and bending over and grabbing your ankles.... thats reality sorry.

They were trying to help you out, by convincing you to hold on to your z. You should be happy

Yes of course private party will get you more if you have the time and patience. As for strictly a trade though, I just find it ridiculous that consumers are only allowed access to blue book, NADA, etc. and not what dealers actual use. Why do sites like Kelley Blue Book even exist if dealers don't even come close to matching?

Those sites exist so you know you're being ripped off. Imagine if they didn't exist, you might think 21k was a good deal!

I find this extremely interesting. I'm thinking about looking for a used 2009 Z rather than buying new and I'm looking for base + sport + MT. I found 2 of them within a reasonable distance from me. One was yellow with 13,100 miles and the dealer was asking 30,600 for it and the lowest they would go is 30k even. Had several small chips on the hood and needed new tires. I pretty much laughed and walked away. Found the other one on the internet and it was silver with 11k miles. Didn't really inquire further but they wanted over 30k for that one too.

Is it just me or are those prices way too high? I could use VPP pricing and get a 2010 for that much.

Given the economy I would probably be willing to pay 25-26k for a used base + sport and if 21-22k is really what they are giving for trade, then 25-26 should more than reasonable to pay used.

There's a reason why unfavorable people can sometimes be referred to as "used car salesmen"

There is way too much profit margin built into used cars these days. It's marketed as "good resale value" - but in all reality, it just means overinflated numbers...

they offer you nothing because they know that a new car purchase is an emotional thing and not a rational decision.

Good for you to walk away, but for every person who does walk away, they probably get 5 sales from people who really want that new car.

That's how the make money, lowball on trade-in 4k and then sell your trade-in to someone for 4k over kbb. So they made 8k of your trade not including the money they make of the new car you got! Constant screw over.

I just bought my 2009 6my base + sport a few weeks ago used. It had 2700 miles on it and the dealer was asking 32k for it. The car was 5 hours away so I spoke to them on the phone. Initially I thought it was a sport + touring and I got them down to 28,500 and was considering it. After looking at the pictures I realised it was not a touring and talked them down to 27k. They had thought it was a touring as well so thats why the price was initially inflated. I feel I got a great deal because prices in the denver tend to be a few thousand more than other areas. I think its due to the fact that there are so few RWD cars here. I say keep looking, anything under 28k for a used base + sport 6mt is worth considering.

Have you not traded a car in before? Having worked in the car business for a short period I can tell you this is normal. Dealers NEVER offer bluebook for a car, they offer the lowest price a car similar to yours fetched at auction recently. If your cars bluebook is $30,000, and they pull up in their system that one like yours sold at an auction for $24,000 they'll offer you $22,000 and see if you take it. If not they will work there way up to the $24,000. Your never going to come out ahead or even close to even when you trade in a car....ESPECIALLY a relatively new car.
