First off- welcome aboard.
The people who think it saves fuel say so because the SRM will not rev the engine any higher than it needs to be. The people who think it wastes fuel complain that if they "wiggle" the stick, the engine will rev in anticipation of you potentially changing gears. All that being said...If you're worried about the gas mileage saved/spent by occasionally unnecessarily revving the engine... perhaps this might not be the car for you. Edit: With that- the sports package is still a steal for what you get. The SRM continues to be one of my favorite features, the LSD is an added benefit, and the rims are by far (IMO) some of the best looking 'stock' rims on any vehicle to date.
