My idea of a relaxing Sunday morning drive

I bought a GoPro Motorsports Hero camera a few weeks ago and didn't get around to really trying it out until this morning, so I went out for an early drive and made the following video. While I was out, I was also able to confirm a certain suspicion I've had about one of the 370Z's official specs . . . ;)

Nice Vid man!http://animepisodes.info/images/471c...d747d77931.jpg

FairmanZ 04-05-2009 02:56 PM

Nice camera. From your video, although one assumes the myth is untrue in a positive way, it could also be untrue in a negative way as well. No telling if your Z's top speed is north or south of the spec. So just what number did you hit?

semtex 04-05-2009 03:35 PM

You mean asking 'Ever wonder what 160 mph looks like from the windshield of a 370Z?' wasn't enough of a hint? I don't want to spell out that I hit xyz speed and have my own video become evidence. We're talking about speeds that are in felony territory, after all.

batman_4 04-05-2009 04:26 PM

:icon14:, hmm now that got me going....i want to see what that "magical" # is :excited:

theDreamer 04-05-2009 04:27 PM

Nice video, good to know about the car. :D

chubbs 04-05-2009 04:32 PM

What lovely long, straight roads.

TBH - it looks very similar to ******mph in my car. Videos don't usually convey the true sense & feeling of the moment, do they?

Nope, they certainly do not. Especially not when the camera has a wide-angle lens.

welderz 04-05-2009 04:53 PM

Did your oil temps go up from being at WOT for so long. Do you think you need an oil cooler or did the wind at those speeds keep the engine cool enough.

WShade 04-05-2009 05:22 PM

That was fantastic!

Nikon FM 04-05-2009 05:23 PM

Nice Vid!

Calculate the distance of those white lines divided by the time it takes to pass one. (Use the hood as a reference as to when the line passes by the car) If one simply considers how fast those white lines are going by I'd say yoou were definitely in felony territory 8 )

Be safe out there.

Yeah I was keeping an eye on the oil temp with all the discussion on the issue. It went up to about 240, but that's it. On a side note, I burned through a quarter tank of gas in just 50 miles.

What was the highest RPM the car reached when in highest gear on this "simulation"?

Minicobra1 04-06-2009 03:58 AM

Save those kind of speeds for the track, or at least wait till there is no traffic at all, I'm just glad knowone decided to change lanes :eekdance:
Not trying to preach, just be safe

OnCallZ 04-06-2009 04:16 PM

you are brave to go that fast, you could probably catch me doing something similar when I was younger. In the ER we get a lot of the brave drivers like that, very few survive, but I don't mean to preach , just be happy all went well.
Glad to know the oil temp stayed low, i've been monitoring mine for a week now

wstar 04-06-2009 04:37 PM

Nice vid semtex

He was being pretty responsible with it, don't worry :driving:

In a past life with a past car, I've hit similar speeds along a certain freeway corridor in TX, I think, maybe, but not really, errr... :) It's a real adrenaline rush, which is why nobody cruises like that for very long at a stretch. The adrenaline would eventually cause a heart attack. It's not like the sterile environment of doing it on a track - there's a lot more "what if" 's to worry about.

I can safely admit to 117mph in that car though, since that was the value written on a speeding ticket I once received a few years ago, so that's already old news to Johnny Law. The cop let me drive away with the ticket though. He was pretty cool about it all things considered. He made a very pointed comment about the number of seconds my brake lights were lit up before he could get a solid lock on me with his instant-on radar, and how many dollars that saved me. ;)

As I've aged I'm just not willing to take the risk very often anymore though (the legal risk, I mean). I've only had the Z up to about 110 so far, but then I woke up because it was all in a dream ;).

semtex 04-06-2009 04:38 PM

Guys, just for the record, I don't drive this fast normally. I don't go out every Sunday morning and try to break the sound barrier either. Really I just wanted to test out my new camera, and figured if I drove at normal speeds it'd make for some pretty boring video, so why not spice things up a little and see what the Z can really do (so long as there weren't too many cars on the highway). What I really want to do with this camera is take it on a drive through the North Georgia mountains. We have some really awesome roads up there that would make for some great footage. There's one road in particular that's full of switchbacks and 180-degree hairpins that always, without fail, leaves my brakes literally smoking by the time I reach the end. Come to think of it, some of you might find my driving on mountain roads even more frightening. But the footage should be fun to watch!

dad 04-06-2009 04:45 PM

xyz, is actually CLX=160.

semtex 04-06-2009 05:06 PM

Here are a couple of pics to show you guys the roads I'm talking about. These pics don't do them full justice, of course, because it's hard to get a sense of the banking and elevation changes. But that's what the camera is for! They are an absolute blast to drive. Route 180 is the one that leaves my brakes smoking.

Brilliant video! That last part where you were on the exit ramp going toward the sun seemed like my ascension into heaven! FWIW I will do a top speed run when/if I get my ZED. Drive that ____ 'till the wheels fall off!

Musashi 04-06-2009 06:43 PM

Thats a sweet video! I just got the same camera and can't wait to test it out.

The_Zed_car 04-06-2009 07:21 PM

Sorry for the stupid n00b question: What kind of camera and mount are you using?

that is awesome. a similarly constructed test was performed on an 06 350z, but a limiter interfered (although it was shaky and scary as a bitchhhhh...so i heard). I have yet to try it out on my 370....glad that u tried it out. you got a pm

bullitt5897 04-07-2009 12:38 PM

Yeah what the vid doesn't show is that I had a big decal on the back with your name on it. Just kidding! :roflpuke2:

Not sure if I can do Little Talladega this far ahead of the date. I'm sure we'll touch base before then tho.

bullitt5897 04-07-2009 12:55 PM

lol you would have no chance in hell if my name was on your car lol :D I dont play nice with piggies :D hehe

Cops are the best.
If you get pulled, it's your fault for being an idiot.
Cops are there to help us everyday and to protect us from crazy people.
Then again some cops are just crazy...

o0javi0o 04-07-2009 11:39 PM

Fast. lol
Can you admit how fast did you go? jajja
nice video bro. Take care and drive safely next time :)

dwsq 04-08-2009 04:07 PM

That was cool, lot of adrenaline just watching the whole thing, couldn't stop watching, great video..... I have a few places around here that I can hit 140 or so haven't over it yet, I really trust the drivers around here to stay in there lane and why should they right, maybe some police lights would move em over, oh wait that means he'd be chasing me....

Side note I did have a brand new vette pull up to me on the highway coming home today. Both of us doing 70, he flashed the lets go and what I love about this car is the roll on instant power, he literally was scared or this car is that bad ***, he was at least 5 car lenghts to my left, BEHIND ME up to 120..

D

RedlineHR 04-10-2009 12:47 AM

Pretty ballsy to hit those speeds on a highway.

All it takes is one a$$clown changing lanes without looking (happens on the cali highways all the time).

Entertaining nonetheless ;)

I did manage to bury the spedo at 160 on my 07 somewhere on a 20-mile stretch of deserted, straight highway in Nevada

Uh, hate to rain on your parade but a new LS3 C6 would leave a Z for dead from a a roll, dig or anything in between. I love the Z as much as the next guy, but the car does not run on hopes and dreams.

A stock 2009 LS3-powered Corvette has a curb weight of 3217 lbs and puts out 436 hp and 428 ft/lb. You do the math :p

ETA: And the Z06 version comes in at 3180 lbs, 505hp, 470 ft/lb

Nice vid - thanks for sharing that!

How was the stability at speed? Did it feel floaty?

It started to feel floaty above a certain speed, but nothing major. There was never any vibration (I used to have an S2000 and it'd start feeling shaky above 130).
