Another Japanese Sports Car Announced

The Toyota FT-86 was shown at the Tokyo auto show
(see Tokyo auto show: Toyota goes sporty with FT-86: AutoWeek Magazine)

My favorite quote from the article:

“Sports cars have to be red, but we wanted a new red,” chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said. “So we came up with shoujyouhi red, the traditional red color of a Japanese monkey's” backside.

:bowrofl:

SlikNik 10-06-2009 03:14 PM

Not diggin the looks of this car:shakes head::roflpuke2:

Endgame 10-06-2009 03:24 PM

This looks like a cross between a RX8 (front), Hyndai Gensis/370z love child (c pillar), and Dodge Interprid rear (lights).

Come on Toyota! Should have released a Supra to fight the Z.....

wolf41779 10-06-2009 03:24 PM

I want to see Subarus version!

zman1910 10-06-2009 03:43 PM

I think it looks pretty good and its only 20k....not bad

kensin0429 10-06-2009 03:50 PM

a boxer 2.0 ? its not gonna be a sports car..
more like a cheap wannabe 2.0 buttugly car

frost 10-06-2009 04:03 PM

Thanks for the info/humor :D
May have been a better fit for the "other vehicles" section though ;)

kenchan 10-06-2009 04:05 PM

there's like 2 other treads + on this car in the other cars section...

blue660r01 10-06-2009 04:08 PM

This thread recieves a big R

Blown32 10-06-2009 04:09 PM

Does nothing at all for me.Thought Toyota could do much better then that!
Thanks for the info though.

rudi 10-06-2009 04:20 PM

Toyota's new red "the traditional red color of a Japanese monkey's” backside."
What were they thinking:bowrofl:

Don't mind the look, I think it will grow on you. I never liked the Z when I first seen it.

2.0turbo???? According to earlier reports this car will only be availabe in non-turbo with 170-200hp. I agree though, it won't be a sports car.

kensin0429 10-06-2009 04:54 PM

sorry typo ^ fixed

shabarivas 10-06-2009 05:43 PM

are you kidding me? thats an awesome platform for a sports car... 3000lbs + 200hp @ 20k? you spend 5-6k on it and you will have a 3000lbs + 300hp RWD track car... you guys are tripping... it might look ugly but im sure you will see a LOT of these around if they were to release it like that...

They are betting on a lot to make that 20,000 price point.
Even the Civic Si is past the 20,000 price point; I can see this at the bottom of the barrel starting at 22,000 and then going up to 25,000. If they can hit the sub 3k mark in weight it might be a good contender but with all the safety standards that are being required it will be tough.

I do hope to see good things from this, just hope this does not turn out to be like the Camaro. Hyped for some time and then a pretty "meh" launch.

CrownR426 10-06-2009 06:08 PM

Wow, very very similar to the 370z.
Copy cats! lol.

Pheonix 10-06-2009 07:33 PM

Personal opinion, I don't think its bad looking at all...a bit weak on the power side, but the aftermarket will jump all over it, and I'm sure it'll siphon away a fair chunk of the Civic 2D and Si crowd.

You probably really don't. Have you seen what's come of Subaru's styling since Toyota took over? :barf: I mean, look no further than the new Imprezas. :barf:

Forrest 10-06-2009 09:08 PM

wow i definetely see a 370z in there.

The Camaro was stale when it launched. We'd already been looking at the design for nearly 4 years.

I'm probably one of the biggest Camaro fans you'll ever talk to, but that THING is just hideous. It's a true abomination to the "Camaro" nameplate.

Yep, I remember seeing it for the first time in 2005 (or 2004) in the Houston Auto Show, first time ever here. I was very happy to see it, but now 2009 and the world has moved on.
This car can do very well, with a set date of 2011 it might be able to hold the hype and launch very well. Now I might have a reason to stop by the auto show in 2011.

I don't particularly care for the design of this new Toyota. I think the "3/4 view" from the rear has a nice profile, but that's it. It certainly doesn't look half as good as the 370Z does.

SpawnAeroJohn 10-06-2009 10:01 PM

I like it. But I dont care much for toyota... My mind might be changed if they were to finally release that supra or that supra in "lexus's body" as they say. I should say... When they release it.

I'm with you...if, when...its been running the rumor mill for how many years now?

zman1910 10-06-2009 10:07 PM

Keep in mind that will most likely be a replacement for the Celica which will be driven mostly by teenagers and/or females. Looking at it like that I really like the design and it'll be nice to have something in that range after the demise of such cars like the RSX and Celica. This car will cater to a different demographic and will hopefully push some of the younger/inexperienced drivers away from the more powerful Z.

Pheonix 10-06-2009 11:23 PM

To be honest with you, I'm more interested in whether or not Mazda actually brings back the RX-7, as rumored. The Takai concept from the last year or two looks delicious, in my opinion.

agree on the "TAIKI" concept Mr "PHOENIX" ! ;)

Furai is interesting as well

Pheonix 10-06-2009 11:30 PM

Furai looks a bit too race carish for my tastes, but thats not to say that it isn't good looking. I just don't see it making production.

Is this going to be similiar to the GT-4 that would be coming out... miss ma celica :) cant wait may be getting 350z nismo!

The 300zx is still alive, it's called a 370z nowdays.

I'm thinking this new Toyota is gonna be a hit. A cheap RWD car young people can buy? The drift world will be all over this. With a few aftermarket parts it should be a pretty fun ride for people who aren't experienced enough to handle larger amounts of power. Looks are subjective as I personally like the styling.

chief_Roka 10-07-2009 09:05 AM

This is the car I threaded about a couple weeks ago that everone was trying to tell me isn't coming out even though I read a new article cconcerning it.

I honestly don't think its bad lookin at all. Its different. And as far as it looking like other cars.
Name a car that doesn't look like or take cues from another vehicle.
The 370z is a hydrid of a 240z n a porsche 911. N the 240z was a rip off of those GT ferraris from the early 60's. Very few original cars today.
There's a twin turbo version of this car and this car also ONLY weighs 2,866lbs..
The N/A version is 220hp/240lbs tq 2,866lbs and a 50/50 weight distribution.
This car might very well be lookin at a 0-60 time of 5.5 and a twin tubo time of 4.4sec
The genesis coupe @ 3,409lbs and 310hp 266lbs tq, V6 gets 5.5seconds on a 55/45 weight distribution.
This car will be almost 600 lbs lighter.
That's like the camaro SS at 3,800lbs 426 hp 400lbstq V8, DOES 0-60 4.6. Quarter mi 13.0
The 370z gets 4.6/13.1 on half the displacement, more than 90hp/130lbs tq deficit. But the cars match in performance numbers. Like the Z against a camaro. The power will die off earlier cuz its a 4 banger. But figure for highway driving. You will probably have enough power to get you to 100mph with sufficient torque. That's not a bad deal. This is lotus inspired engineering as well.
Like the styling or not. This toyota will be a force to be reckoned with.

I'm still buyin a Z though. Lol. :)

Please provide a link or source of these numbers.
I have yet to see any news on the HP or that a TT version is being produced.

If mazda makes another low torque RX I will be very angry.
I had an rx7 for 8 years. I remember when I test drove the rx8 in 2004 I was very disappointed. It handled great but power delivery was sub par compared to my 93 RX-7
My RX7 I felt handled just as well though and had Waaaaayyyyyy more power. But I don't remember reviewers making a big deal over the rx7 until it was defunct. Go figure? And all praises went to the rx8 that didn't have the power to match its handling prowess.
I really hope mazda get the rx7 right IF they bring it out.

I ran a thread a few weeks ago on this car. U can find the websites I got the info from there.
The times are not quotes. If u read what I'm saying.
I'm giving a guesstimation judging by weight, size, power.
This car is not new. So there's tons of news on the motor and speculated power displacement. Just do the research.
This car was supposed to be released this winter along with the silvia.
But both nissan and toyota pulled back. Toyota just got back in the game. Let's see what nissan does? Judging by the fact they took a year to sell 10k Z's I don't think nissan will be willing to invest in another sports car right now.

theDreamer 10-07-2009 09:48 AM

Yes your estimates are on an engine we have facts on, but until this car is finalized in weight/power/engine revisions we cannot estimate these things. The car could look exactly like that but end up with a weight of 3200 pounds at the current HP output or less.

Pheonix 10-07-2009 09:57 AM

They've also said that they're still tweaking the existing boxer engine, and all numbers right now are pure speculation based on the existing numbers and what they "suppose" Toyobaru are going to do with the engine, again, with its speculated 20k-30k asking price.

Yeah, I should have posted this in the other vehicles section.

But I thought the monkey's backside inspiration was too funny to pass up!
