Here's the best part, even if you're past the warranty they will still fix any major problems for at least one full year under "good will". This is of course if you purchased the car new and are the original owner.

BMW's are not the most reliable but neither are many of the JDM vehicles as of late. They have their fair share of issues and recalls. My brothers Acura which is only a few years old had to have it's entire transmission replaced due to a defect.

As far as maintaining the car outside of warranty, you can get parts online for less and find a good indy shop to do the work but as others have said you will pay more than on say a Z. After all, it's still German "luxury" car. Get what you like and can afford, but most importantly be smart about your purchase. Good luck.

Quality must have gone down during since my time. I owned /bought a BMW Evo M3 e36 back in 2005 with 71K miles on the clock, only needed a front caliper and abs sensor and also the manifold down pipe flex pipe cracked until my ownership thru to 110K miles. All else was fine, then again.. I guess all these parts at the dealership would have cost me mega monies... Fortunately I did most myself. I guess you proved your points, once over a certain mileage then $$$.

I maybe tripping or may not be, but the handling of my stock 1997 M3 was > than my current ride the 2014 Z.

i would love to get the Bimmer -- but I am still too young visioning myself in a sedan/coupe. Perhaps in 10 years, I can frankly tell you to go with the bimmer.

In the meantime, since you are concerned with the maintenance, go with the Z. Yes, each one will eventually need repairs but the Z would be cheaper.

Btw, call the BMW and I bet the warranty can be extended --- assuming you really want the Bimmer. I almost bought a 740il and that's why I know about extending the warranty.
