Since I can only own one car (at least until my daughter graduates college), I thought I was "settling" on the 7-speed. I was wrong. The tranny changes gears plenty fast and, although, I do, at times, miss rowing gears manually, I have only one complaint - the paddle shifters don't rotate with the steering wheel. Other than that, it shifts hard and it shifts quickly. Does the AT shift at light speed? No, but for the money, I'll put it up against anything.

For twisty roads: you'll get used to finding the paddle shifters after a little seat time. For launches: turn VDC off, place your left foot on the brake, and find the right RPM for your Z.

Unless you keep your hands on the steering wheel at exactly at 9 & 3 the whole time on twisty roads (don't know how you would do that), stationary paddle shifters are the way to go.

Think of it this way, you're driving your 6 mt trans car hard around a curvy track. You reach down to change gears and wtf, the shifters not there, it moved 4 inches to the right. 6 seconds later you gotta shift again, wtf it's not there again, it moved 3 inches up and to the left......you get the message.

kenchan 10-08-2014 04:43 PM

oh geez, i absolutely HATE paddles that turn with the steering wheel. that is so dumb when you're trying to shift into 2nd while making a left hand turn. you'll be all twisted and tangled up. :shakes head:

I had that going until last year. 2007 1200 Roadster with mods and my Ducati 848 beside it. The HD got sold because I never rode it anymore.

Ah mr. JAR, I remember that day too! It was my first time on a track with a manual Z and I struggled with the synchro rev downshifting as I was used to heal and toe. I finally had to turn it off. Missed a few braking points and almost tore out the transmission at one point!

When we got in the GT-R's I was back at home banging downshifts with the paddles like a pro.

To each his own. I've just never been a fan of the clutch on the G37/Z after spending decades in Hondas and Acuras.

Sadly, it looks like there won't be any manual trans options in a few years.

Definitely both are skills to hone.

I will make you a great deal on mine if you are really interested in buying an automatic. Seriously. PM me, text, or call me.

Acura lease is up July 13, 2015. Can I start small payments now and pay it off then? :rofl2:

I'll have to say no on the payment plan, but will keep you in mind for next July. The car MAY have 3,000 additional miles on it, bringing it up to 21,000.

Nissan Platinum bumper-to-bumper warranty expires in July 2018.

lol I wasn't suggesting that I get the car now. Just that I start payments now. I trust you

Mileage is no problem. Melody will put another 21K miles on it in less than ~15 months :driving:

We'll be in touch next Spring :icon17:

now with the Z06 specs i feel a C7 is pointless to buy lol

but then for Z06 price i can get a 2014 GT-R which is still my goal.

i had thoughts and plans on a GT-R this spring.......but now i got a fiance' and a wedding to save for. so yea GT-R or Vette are both on hold for a bit lol

I test drove the 7AT, the shift weren't smooth as when i shift manually, and the pedal seemed to have a pretty large deadzone compared to the manual. I knew beforehand that id go with a manual. But i was let down anyways by the paddles. Ive always thought they were cool.

It's the two extras resonators are part of the reason for the dead zone. The other half are the stock intake tubes & ground wiring (AT Only) to the tranmission. Improve all the above and you lose 75%of the dead spot.

While the 7AT certainly isn't hard to drive in manual mode if your In the wrong gear it will feel slow. The lag when in auto is usually the tranny shifting from 7th to say 2nd. It's definitely not a perfect design but once you get used to where the Z's power is and what gear is right for what you need it's great. Also in manual mode the shifts aren't meant to be smooth it's supposed to have quick aggressive shifts.

I've had multiple occasions to drive a 7AT base Z. I'm more of a 6MT driver myself, but the paddles are definitely fun to play with, and that extra gear makes it nice with hwy driving.

Agreed. Hence, my comment about wishing the paddle shifters rotated with the steering wheel.

Also, as an aside, the gears in the AT can be changed with the console shifter itself (forward to go up, backward to go down), which is no more difficult than changing gears with a MT.

Element600ee 10-13-2014 12:38 AM

it took me all of 2 days of driving the **** out of my 7at to get used to where the paddles were . i can get buck sideways in 2nd gear let go with my right hand upshift into 3rd ( all while the car shifts so fast i never stop spinning and tries to change direction like a manual would ) and continue to smolder tires in 3rd up to the limiter . remove my right hand from the wheel again and slide away into 4th as she shift nice , hard and fast into 4th . i know these are not dsg gear boxes but if you know how to drive a car and drive a car hard . nissan did a very good job with this trans . btw once in manual mode at 10mph or more the tq locks so its just like having the clutch out . to my understanding it only does this in manual mode . if you have a 7at you will notice that once your rolling there is no play in the rpms on an off throttle it stays at that dead set rpm .. i say bravo to nissan for this trans . ive tracked cars all my life and i thought for sure id hate it . on the test ride when i broke sideways in second tapped the paddle and it did what i told it to when i told it to i was amazed . when i take off in first spinning i can spin into 3rd all day 4th if im a real jack *** and you cant tell where the car shifted gears by the marks it shifts so fast . would i rather it be a dsg yes but it was enough to win me over . also as far as you track guys go on your downshifts try feeding it a little gas as you choose a lower gear under breaking . nissan has designed a nice little feature that allows you to do this smoothly without powering into corners on the breaks . it will allow you to down shift just as smooth as a heal toe shift . i dont know how it does it maybe just drops vaacuume to make the downshifts on hard breaking smooth as butter .

2xtreme1 10-13-2014 12:45 AM

I love the paddles. I used to use the shift knob a lot. Now I only use the paddles. However, after two years of ownership, I have just chilled on drive every now and then. Its not too bad.

hey32g 10-15-2014 03:11 PM

I've driven the 7AT and the paddles are great, but my question is, how often do you guys actually shift gears using them? I had a Maxima with paddles and while they weren't quite as quick, they were pretty dang good, but after awhile I just stopped using them. It seemed senseless while driving around town. So really, how often do you use them?

kenchan 10-15-2014 03:13 PM

A maxima is cvt based no? Why bother virtual shifting cvt... defeats the purpose

almost every single mile on my car has been in manual mode and with me shifting.

moving it around the drveway when washing it i just put it in drive to go the 5 feet.

every day. i only use drive to go about in parking lots, starting from a stop since 1-2 is smoother in D at low speeds, or when cruising at 80 on the freeway since i think it gets better mpg that way.

cooltoy 10-15-2014 05:20 PM

blackcherry20 10-15-2014 06:41 PM

I test drove a '14 with paddle shifters (while my Z was getting oil changed) and IT WAS AWESOME! Lol. After I got used to it anyways. I would def consider it if I had it to do over.

UNKNOWN_370 10-15-2014 06:54 PM

This rough 1st 2nd really bothers sports car owners? The next gen 7at won't be aggressive enough because people keep mentioning the rough 2 gears. I like that jerk feeling in conjunction with a burst of torque. Reminds me I'm driving a something emotional & powerful.

kenchan 10-15-2014 06:59 PM

Wat the AT even tries to mimick a crappy MT driver?
