I almost cried

1 Attachment(s)
Well guys, I've been driving Tina for the last week since winter will be coming up soon and when I went to wash/wax her before putting her in the stable I find this...

After being very pissed and then almost crying I resolved myself to the ya'll.

I have no idea where/when this happened but I always park far away from everyone!

This is scratched into the plastic of the bumper, not just the paint. Is there any fix for this that doesn't involve a body shop or new bumper ?

Thanks in advance..

kenchan 09-18-2014 09:34 AM

sorry to see. :(

i would sand/bondo it, and then put the new 4D overlay on the entire front bottom portion... or just glossy black.
should look nice again.

paratrooper 09-18-2014 09:36 AM

What is this 4D overlay you speak of ?

kenchan 09-18-2014 09:40 AM

it is the current version simulated carbon fiber overlay (decal) post DiNoc. you can find small rolls on amazon/ebay, also bluebatmobile (vendor) should carry it too.

kenchan 09-18-2014 09:41 AM

if you're not into cf, you can also get glossy black.

paratrooper 09-18-2014 09:46 AM

I was actually looking at the Stillen fascia but it doesn't look like it has places for the LED's on the 2014's.

Pie 09-18-2014 10:06 AM

Sorry :(

coolvans1988 09-18-2014 10:10 AM

I was expecting something more harsh...

nomodsjk 09-18-2014 10:14 AM

Dear lord! Sux man! Look up the evo-r carbon fiber fang cover they're 180$ and they look great! It will definitely cover that portion of the bumper and will cost about the same as fixing it via body shop plus you will have carbon!!

When I look up pictures of that Evo-r it looks like its on all pre 2013 models. I did see somewhere else where someone mentioned something about aerojacket.. maybe I'll check there since I'm picking up a duckbill too.

I thought about trying a wet sand tonight but its only going to make it a little better since its into the plastic. Maybe slightly less ugly.

kenchan 09-18-2014 10:28 AM

ive not seen it done yet, u'd be the first. but then if you do it right, it will look very nice. it's not rocket science. make a template out of wrapping paper or something before you cut. also make sure that the bumper is completely flat (bondo/sand) before you place the overlay. otherwise the decal will show ripples. :D

that's a plenty big damage in my book.

nomodsjk 09-18-2014 10:50 AM

Lohit over at fly1 motorsports may be able to point you in the right direction. I know he uses 4d carbon to wrap his custom skid plates. He's a really nice guy and I'm sure he would be willing to help.

Never track your car. Things like this happen.

Good luck.

jaedub 09-18-2014 01:16 PM

Road debris must have caused the damage. Sh!t happens and there's nothing you can do about it......unless you put clear bra on.

-Get a fine sand paper and grind the rough edges to get it flush with the bumper
-Apply touch up paint
-Let it dry and apply more paint until it fills up the crevasse
-Sand the entire painted area to get it smooth and flush with the bumper
-Polish

The result can be quite impressive if you do it correctly. People won't notice it unless they squat and directly look at the damaged area within 3 feet.

jaedub 09-18-2014 01:28 PM

And consider yourself lucky. If that road debris hit your fender or the hood, the damage will be A LOT more prominent and harder to fix.

I'd invest in a clear bra ASAP if your bumper is still in good condition. My bumper lost its chance. It's freckled to **** by rock chips and road debris. I'm getting amuse front later down to line.

I think I'll give this a shot and then maybe also look at the carbon 4D overlay! Thanks for the great advice.. worst case I tear up the bumper and buy a new one, but I would certainly like to avoid that outcome.

kenchan 09-18-2014 01:42 PM

yah, or try it and if you dont like it, try the overlay. and if you still hate it, take it to a body shop for repair.

the issue with the touchup is you have to let it dry for at least 2wks before you can wet sand it. otherwise it can still be tacky and stick to the sandpaper more than getting sanded down. not sure how much time you have left before putting your car away.

GL with the fix.

paratrooper 09-18-2014 02:15 PM

I'm really glad you just said two weeks.. I would have likely waited 2 days and then been very pissed when I realized how tacky it still was.

yep, the more layers you put on, the longer you need to wait.

i fixed a dent/chip on my G's hood last year and i waited 3wks before wet sanding. turned out great.
in my case i had to push out the dent using my pdr tools.
