Funny thing about oil....especially synthetic..

Maybe you guys are too young to know or remember but cars have been going over 100k miles, even 200k miles, long before synthetics or fancy filters and such. Just Dino oil and much simpler oil filters.

It's One thing to want to use synthetics to change oil less often and another to do it because it is better for the ca. Are we not overdoing it when we buy a Z and really plan on driving it for 3-4 years? There are discussions about redline versus Mobil 1 and various filters and on and on...

It's like arguing one set of head phones (costing a hundred dollars more) is better than another set of headphones when we could not ever tell the difference.

I bet no one could drive a Z and tell that this one is a better Z than the next because this one has synthetic in it.

ZeeBabar 08-28-2014 05:40 AM

A better analogy, sort of like arguing that a razor with 5-7 blade gives you a better shave and is better for your face than a double blade razor.

DjSquall 08-28-2014 06:01 AM

Some of us are planning on keeping the Z's for a little longer than 3-4 years. Like.... Forever.

Also, engine technology has evolved since those days as well. Yes, regular oil will still lubricate fine on a regular basis, but synthetic is better and tougher. And lasts longer.

It's like comparing a honda civic vs a lamborghini. Both have four wheels and get from A to B. But one is just way better than another.

Debiandog 08-28-2014 06:06 AM

I do it for peace of mind. I have been running synthetics near 20 years and when I was drag racing cars many people blew motors using the same high rev configuration I did yet my motor stayed running. To me it is worth the cost knowing I will have less friction, better coverage on parts, smoother flow, etc.... I don't sweat it staying up near the redline.

Isn't one of the main reason's you should use synthetic in our cars do to heat. Dyno oil degrades really fast once it gets into the 240+ degree range which our cars can easily achieve once pushed really hard. I'm sure someone on here will chime in and correct me.

That's why I use cooking oil. Not the cheap stuff, not canola, my Z only gets high grade almond oil. Sure, other folks say I'm being bourgeois, but my exhaust smells like amaretto; who can beat that.

JARblue 08-28-2014 07:38 AM

We do not need another oil thread on this forum...

My Bose QC15 headphones are better than yours.

So are my Sony Studio Monitor headphones.

b15 08-28-2014 07:43 AM

Tolerances are much tighter now than 'back in the day'. It's the same reason why cars of yester years run much thicker oil too. You don't have to run synthetic, but if you are truly driving your car let us know how dino holds up to the abuse and heat this car makes when driven hard.

Dino oil, no second car....sounds like you're a cheap person.

madwi 08-28-2014 07:46 AM

No hooker analogy today?

Question of the morning. Have you ever read any other posts on the 370Z forum besides the ones that you post and create ?

I've heard great things about them. I'm looking at the QC 20, I just don't like the bulk of regular headphones.

Btw, I'm a Marriott guy as well. We just spent 5 days in Union Square in SF on points in an upgraded room with a wonderful view. Traveling has its perks from time to time.

Click on his user name. Then his profile page, click the User List link below his name and above his last activity record. There should be a drop down menu with three options with Add to Ignore List being the last :tiphat:
