My 17 year old son just asked to take my car to prom

I said yes but feel sick to my stomach about it. It's going to be a long two and a half weeks until this is over!

Tazicon 04-15-2014 06:39 PM

Why would you say yes to this........I would pay for a limo before I said yes to this.

Got_Z 04-15-2014 06:43 PM

Good luck with your insurance goals of 2014.

ka24king 04-15-2014 06:45 PM

LOL I'm sure he will be fine as long as he's not drinking

jdsto 04-15-2014 06:51 PM

if he ever wants to drive the car ever again, this opportunity should convince him not to drink and drive on prom night.

I would give this opportunity to my son in a heart beat, he would remember it forever.

I would just make sure that he drives it before the big night so that he is comfortable with the car when he goes on his own.

MacCool 04-15-2014 06:58 PM

I would never loan my car to someone I didn't trust to treat it the same way I do.

JWillis72 04-15-2014 06:59 PM

He is a great kid and student (unlike me) so I couldn't say no. I don't have to worry about this one drinking, we leave him home for weekend all the time and have never had one problem and I have neighbors that keep an eye on him. Since the car is supercharged I have a tune on it just in case this happened (4000 rpm and 60 mph) but it's still my car with a kid driving it. I need another drink!

:iagree: Boy, I would have told him to want in one hand & crap in the other & let me know which one fills up first.
Personally I think this is a bad move in so many ways & it's not about the car not being replaceable, sometimes bad decisions are made without ever knowing how bad they are

Good luck to all involved

:iagree: Definitely make sure you get him comfortable with the car & hopefully he will act responsible

kenchan 04-15-2014 07:03 PM

id be more worried about it getting dinged or keyed or something stupid.

MacCool 04-15-2014 07:05 PM

You sound like a good father. I understand your anxiety...I remember the first time I let my son take my Harley. I'll bet your son doesn't let you down on this.

My first question was " you haven't pissed anyone off enough to key my car have you?" But that's just not him. He been getting up at 4 am to go to football conditioning, doing track practice after school and doing homework until 11-12 at night so he doesn't have time to be in trouble.

Parent of the year candidate!

That's awesome of you. Hopefully, your faith in your son is rewarded. I would do the same in your position.

JWillis72 04-15-2014 07:15 PM

Thank you MacCool, I try my best and it sounds like you've been there!

Those things can be fixed. This is a memory that will last a lifetime for the boy.

enkei2k 04-15-2014 07:19 PM

Well...if it makes you feel any better, it's REALLY difficult to have sex in the Z, so at least it'll be clean of bodily fluids? :ugh2:

JWillis72 04-15-2014 07:22 PM

I said that to my wife as soon as he was out of the room!

Just be sure to throw an extra coat of wax on the hood just in case :icon17:

I've been there and learned a lot. He's never let me down. I have very little concern about trusting these things to him these days.

skidad62 04-15-2014 07:28 PM

I let my son take my 640 rwhp car to his prom (full cage lol) -

...I used my handheld programmer to load a tune specific to him...

- Pulled all the timing out of it

- Rev limited to 4,000 rpm (to hold it to about 400 hp)

- Traction control locked on

- Speed limited to 75 mph

Worked great

JWillis72 04-15-2014 07:31 PM

Apparently my wife and him had this conversation before I knew about it and she said he could take her Veloster Turbo if I said no. Then he showed my wife her dress and my wife said he not going anywhere with her and a back seat! He's a great kid but lets face nothing destroys a god man like a bad woman!

You are not funny! If there are *** prints on the carbon fiber there will be hell to pay! Now that you pointed this out we WILL have this conversation!

DEpointfive0 04-15-2014 07:34 PM

I'm sure he's a great kid. But I want you to take a look at the attached pic. That GTR was also driven by a 17 y.o. great kid. He didn't drink and got straight A's. He's now in a wheelchair for life.

Please don't do it. A 17 y.o. does not possess the driving skills.

valpozguy 04-15-2014 07:38 PM

Put uprev tune on it. Car won't go over 55mph and over 3500rpm. Problem solved.

My car has a tune that won't let him go 4000rpm or 60 mph, his Altima lets him go faster. I'm not turning him loose with a rocket but thanks for trying to say I'm a sucky father! That's as nice as I can say it so please go away!

Me too but I wouldn't have done it for me as a kid!

shaun66 04-15-2014 07:50 PM

Just make sure he isn't strolling around after the dance to go drinking. Is it just him and his date?

JWillis72 04-15-2014 08:03 PM

No there are a group of them going together. I have zero concerns about him drinking, he's so ridiculously by the books I worry he missed a fun time in life. I'm a jaded person that broke every rule but this kid is so good it's disgusting !
