FML..RIP rear right tire

This was yesterday morning, I was heading to work on the 405 doing 80... and a warning pops up on the display "Low tire pressure".

I figured ok when I stop I'll take a look, maybe needs more air...within 5 minutes...car starts to shake slowly....and so quickly CHUB CHUB CHUB CHUB CHUB CHUB -___-

I was forced to drive maybe 3/4 of a mile till I was able to pull up to a safe area and slap on the spare. here are the results:

coolvans1988 04-14-2014 05:22 PM

mines still holding up good and at 13k miles.
i was on the 405 this weekend, i averaged about 100 miles.

I managed to safely pull over...it was a little bumpy but nothing crazy.

The rim has no damage?

black_sedan 04-14-2014 06:43 PM

is the fender damaged? I see a black ring around the wheel well and that make me cringe.

Not where the rim is visible [what I can see]. The wheel is still on the rim.
Taking it tomorrow for a tire replacement. But the rim does look ok.

That's from the wheel rubbing on the fender...should be able to take that off with no problem.

Codename067 04-15-2014 03:18 AM

Well...I just saw this... HOW? It's from the SIDE! It's fairly big..

Trust me, the tire would deflate LONG before I hit the freeway if that was the case lol. That's a pretty big hole.

I was driving for a solid 20 minutes on the freeway before low tire pressure came on. And it was a matter of a maybe 5 minutes after that came up before the tire went flat and the rim started molesting it.

I'm just glad it was the rear tire. It's only rubber at the end of the day.

Curb/pothole? Sidewalls take a lot of stress and even a little bit of missing sidewall can cause a failure over time. Might have even been a tire bubble that just popped. Either way the only thing for sure is you need a new tire =P

Not to make a bad situation worse, but the low tire pressure light came on and you continued to drive another 5 minutes?

Yeah..just like any normal person would. I really thought the tire just needed air, which is the case 99% of the time. I couldn't have possibly assumed that I had a hole the size of a 9mm bullet! I didn't feel nothing, I didn't see nothing.

I certainly would not have pulled off immediately to change the tire either. I take a wait and see approach as you did.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not but really though, given that I didn't SEE what caused this nor did I feel anything...I simply figured low air.

And presto...they got me bro..

ive actually seen a tires sidewall blow out so smooth it looked like it was done by a surgeon. the hole was 3 or 4 inches long and about 2 inches wide. unreal. driver said it was a pothole.

No sarcasm here. To pull over the second the sensor goes off is not happening. Watch and wait. If I hit a pothole I am not heading directly to an alignment shop either, unless I felt something amiss.

kenchan 04-15-2014 04:51 PM

damn, was someone using your wheels for target practice?

Hahaha seriously bro! Whoever he was he's a good shot that's for sure..haha

synolimit 04-17-2014 03:45 AM

Craziest thing I ever saw was a biker came to the shop complaining he had to keep filling his tire up every few days. Took the tire off the front wheel and out popped a wood splinter 7 inches long and at the base as thick as a dime. How he didn't have a dime size hole in the tire, we'll never know! Crazy that tire didn't blow and kill him.

FPenvy 04-17-2014 07:47 AM

see what happens when you paint your wheels to look like clay pigeons......they get shot at lol
