Curb/pothole? Sidewalls take a lot of stress and even a little bit of missing sidewall can cause a failure over time. Might have even been a tire bubble that just popped. Either way the only thing for sure is you need a new tire =P

Trust me, the tire would deflate LONG before I hit the freeway if that was the case lol. That's a pretty big hole.

I was driving for a solid 20 minutes on the freeway before low tire pressure came on. And it was a matter of a maybe 5 minutes after that came up before the tire went flat and the rim started molesting it.

I'm just glad it was the rear tire. It's only rubber at the end of the day.

Not to make a bad situation worse, but the low tire pressure light came on and you continued to drive another 5 minutes?

Yeah..just like any normal person would. I really thought the tire just needed air, which is the case 99% of the time. I couldn't have possibly assumed that I had a hole the size of a 9mm bullet! I didn't feel nothing, I didn't see nothing.

I certainly would not have pulled off immediately to change the tire either. I take a wait and see approach as you did.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not but really though, given that I didn't SEE what caused this nor did I feel anything...I simply figured low air.

And presto...they got me bro..

ive actually seen a tires sidewall blow out so smooth it looked like it was done by a surgeon. the hole was 3 or 4 inches long and about 2 inches wide. unreal. driver said it was a pothole.

No sarcasm here. To pull over the second the sensor goes off is not happening. Watch and wait. If I hit a pothole I am not heading directly to an alignment shop either, unless I felt something amiss.

Craziest thing I ever saw was a biker came to the shop complaining he had to keep filling his tire up every few days. Took the tire off the front wheel and out popped a wood splinter 7 inches long and at the base as thick as a dime. How he didn't have a dime size hole in the tire, we'll never know! Crazy that tire didn't blow and kill him.
