Pain in the a$$!

Well like the title states, my 370z has literally gave me a pain in my buttocks area, more so my hip. I've never driven a standard car before and at first I attributed the pain in my left hip to not being used to a clutch. Well 4 months down the road, I figured my body would be used to it by now, but the pain is still there. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so, how they corrected it!?

Try adjusting the lumbar support.
Take your wallet out of your pocket when driving.

It took me several weeks of trial and error to get my seat adjusted properly. And the wallet removal is a good idea too.

The seats in the Z are far different from my previous daily driver... a 2008 Versa.

tWeEzY 04-05-2014 05:51 AM

my only gripe is the seat. No pain but cant have my wallet in pocket. I understand the seat's purpose but I'm not a fan.

Wallet out is #1 thing I did to make it more comfortable. I have moved onto a money clip that can hold a card or two. Makes for easy front pocket carrying and it gets rid of the BS I don't need to be carrying in the first place.

yah, i too keep my wallet in my front pocket while driving. that and wearing looser pants.

also even one click tilt on the seat back angle can change things.

Justice97 04-05-2014 09:13 AM

Make sure you are not at full extension with your leg when clutch is depressed. Your leg should be slightly bent, not stretching to get it(the clutch) pushed in.
As for wallet one should never carry a wallet in your back pocket. Over time your hips will become crooked and it can create spine problems later.
Make sure your driving comfortabley, not trying to look cool. The car takes care of any dork like appearances you may have.

DjSquall 04-05-2014 09:31 AM

Make sure you're sitting in the center of the seat. I know it sounds stupid, but I have the habit of sitting slightly to the side and I don't realize it until my back starts to hurt from being awkwardly bent.

harordr 04-05-2014 11:08 AM

This happens to me too! It gets to the point sometimes where im twisting my body sideways on the expressway so im only sitting on my right cheek haha. I keep trying to adjust my seat but havnt found the sweet spot yet.

Riptide67 04-05-2014 12:07 PM

I've never had an issue with the seats in both of my Z cars. I like them over most OEM seats. No matter the car, I always remove my wallet. It's super uncomfortable having that thing in there.

Well I've never driven with my wallet in my back pocket, so I know for sure that's not the problem. I'm gonna have to consider the sitting in the middle of the seat, cause I do tend to sit more to the right side. I notice that my hip only bothers me when I rotate my leg, I can walk/run without feeling any pain. I think it has to do with how my long legs have to sort of wrap around the steering wheel, putting my leg in an awkward angle and then pushing through with it for the clutch is just not something my hip is used to, maybe like stated above, I need to watch how far I extend my leg. Thanks for the input guys! And as far as the elderly cushion goes, I didn't think any part of my body would need "elderly" assistance for another 50 years haha :rofl2:

Have you been screened for scoliosis? Just a thought.

Sign up for a Pilates class. Great for your core and mobility for legs, hips and shoulders. The instructors and scenery in the class will make up for any ribbing your buddies give you.:yum:

Pain In The SEAT!

My back pain was so severe with these base seats, I had to do something or give up the car. Changing seats is just a shot in the dark. You don't know what the results will be and there are no returns. I bought a seat cushion, made with a steel frame, USA, called Sacro-Ease, by McCarty's. Absolutely no more pain, and I take long road trips. I got the one with an extra inch of pad in the seat section.
Hope this helps.

Alot of guys with wallet problems....Do you guys carry wallets like george costanza, or what?
I've had a wallet in my back pocket for almost 40 years, even (gasp) when driving, no issues. I've also never had a doctor tell me that I shouldn't carry my wallet in my back pocket for fear of hip or back issues:icon14:
Maybe some of you guys need to get a purse. (or a european carry-all)

Fuzzzy 04-05-2014 03:12 PM

I used to have to take my wallet out of my back pocket for long trips until I changed to an All-ETT wallet https://www.all-ett.com/ . They won't impress anyone for looks, but if you want a thin wallet, they are terrific.

I've only had two--I got the original all-nylon about ten years ago. It was a little too flimsy but probably would have lasted forever. I bought the leather model when they were introduced and am still using it. I haven't had to remove my wallet while driving since I bought the first one.

Infidel 04-05-2014 03:41 PM

Try carrying a concealed weapon with a 40" waist. I don't go anywhere without it.:tiphat:

RoadsterST 04-05-2014 03:58 PM

Conceal carry with a fat wallet..lol
I remove both on long trips though.

This is wonderful advice if this is your first manual car. If your short like me I will find that is u have a sport model with no power seats one click up is too close and one click back your stretching out. Play around with the seat closer and as other mentioned no crap in your back pockets and adjusting the lumbar. With all of these things I have no doubt u will find a comfortable seat position. Oh and if no one mentioned it u may need a good chiropractic adjustment to get ya straightened back out. Good luck bro

My biggest grip about the car. I've managed to find my best position, but I had the one click too close, one click too far. I was in between the two positions. Had to choose one and play with the seat angle to get comfortable! :nutswinger:

My "mother in law's" old crone friends told my wife that "he'll have joint issues with that sports car, har har", you can imagine.....
So far just taking the wallet out of my back pocket is all I've done. I'm not a "tip toe" driver, I drive with the ball of my foot, not the toes, so far I've had no issues, at first I had some stiffness on the clutch leg, but after I got accustomed to it no issues since.
I do go the gym regularly to keep limber. At 53 you gotta take what you can get.
OP may have to experiment to find the best position. Some folks just have back alignment issues with these cars, that's why I got mine for a steal with 11K on the speedo.

Jordo! 04-06-2014 07:24 PM

Bucket seats, sports car, you CANNOT have anything in your back pockets while driving. Spend time getting seat position and steering column as comfy as possible.

Lumbar support in this car kinda sucks, so the rest is just accepting and adapting.

I may need to just keep trying different seat positions! I do notice that because I have long legs, I have to put my knees at an angle so they're on the side of the steering wheel and when I push through for the clutch my leg goes through a weird rotating extension. I think that's where I'm getting the pain. I can walk/run without any pain, but as soon as I rotate my leg it hurts. I think a telescoping steering wheel would help, so my knees wouldn't sit in the way of the steering wheel. I'll keep on stretching and adjusting my seat and hopefully I won't have to give up on the 370! Thanks for all the input!!

I'm in X-ray, work with orthopedic doctors and I've seen many people with hip or lower back problems. I'd say go see a doctor. If you feel a sudden pain through your back and/or legs, it could be your SI Joint. Riding with your knees high can cause more bending of your lower back/pelvis. Being a big guy and cramming yourself in such a tiny space can hurt in the long run.

Ya I have noticed my back gets a little sore and so does my knee, I'll definitely look into getting an x-ray. Appreciate it!

Did an 18 1/2 hr drive to florida in 2012, and another 18 1/2 home with wallet firmly placed in back pocket. No nerve damage, crushed disks, sciatica, ect, ect..... And no pilates before trip. I wouldn't say you CANNOT have it there, just that some chose not to.

I'm a fairly large guy at 6'-1" fluctuating between 210 and 240 lbs depending on my eating/activity ratio.

When I drive the Z spiritedly, I consistently find myself sitting primarily on my right a$$ cheek, with the left one up on the left bolster of the seat. This isn't very comfortable even with my level of a$$ cushioning, and it can irritate my back muscles, too. I have to reposition myself constantly. Thankfully, this isn't something I do often enough to make it a real problem. The car is my DD, so I treat her with respect and the occasional flogging. If I start to track/autoX the car, I'll definitely have to pick up some racing seats.

That being said, I find the Z incredibly comfortable for long distances. In every car I've owned, and most cars I've ever ridden in long distances, I constantly find myself trying to get comfortable. Cruising on the highway in the Z, I am able to get comfortable once, and drive to my destination without any other adjusting.

Well sometimes it not the actual ride of distance. It's just the action of getting in and out of the car that can trigger symptoms on larger people. I remember a sales guy struggling to get out of the car.

Money clip is so much cheaper in the end game though.

I gave up on the wallet years ago. I had a money clip with a Mexican 50 peso gold coin all set in 14K gold. This was cool until I lost it for a few months, it fell between something.

When I found it with a couple hundred dollars in it and realized that the gold alone was worth nearly $2K, I sold it, and now just fold and stuff the money in my front pocket along with an expired drivers liscense.

So I agree that in the end a money clip is cheaper, just do not follow my foot steps.
