Who the f*ck care about MT vs. AT?

I knew a guy that proclaimed to know how to drive manual (and all the associated techniques), but he never owned any manual cars and in the 3 years I knew him, I never saw him drive an MT. So finally a buddy and I put him behind the wheel of a 5MT accord (VERY easy to drive). After much teasing, he finally got in and he couldn't make it down the street....

I've had my share of each. When I was shopping the 370 for almost a year before I purchased I test drove nothing but the MT. But traffic here is so horrendous I couldn't fathom actually buying one. And I wasn't impressed with it so I never pulled the trigger. Then one cool March evening last year I waltzed in to the dealer again. They had a few ATs on the lot. Sales guy convinced me to at least try it. So I did. And I signed the papers an hour later. No real regrets. Just wish it didn't sound like an auto. At least it still kicks ***.

I would think that someone who does not have any interest in learing to drive standard would not buy sport cars.
they buy kia and hyundai.

Personally I had a choice between a black base sport MT and a white touring AT, which I think would make anybody have seconds thoughts at least for a second, but ultimately I bought the car that I wouldn't normally have.

Not that it matters but I'm sure there are tons that cannot, but say they can. This is the interwebs afterall.

I drove a 6MT car (a '99 WS-6 TransAm!) for a decade before I picked up my 7AT 370. I'm probably a little rusty now because I haven't owned a manual car for about 5 years, although once in a blue moon I do get to drive someone's manual Jeep or something randomly.

I don't mind a normal auto in something like my tow-truck, but I could never drive a sportscar that didn't let me pick gears explicitly. There's little point in that. However, the 7AT really does let you drive it like a manual in M-mode. The only real difference from that sort of perspective is not having to mess with the clutch pedal, which is really just another nice convenience over the one you 6MT guys already get compared to a "real" manual: SRM.

I'll give you 7AT-haters a lot more credit if you permanently disable the SRM on your car first :p

12.34 @ 114.14 in the 1/4 mile. 1.800. 60 ft times.
not slow and not boring to drive.
just floor it keep it floored and shift with the paddles. ( do not lift when you change gears.)

drag radials are use less in the rain .

I was waiting for @Z Eliminator to chime in. If anyone has exploited the capabilities of the 7at it's this guy.

Learned on MT. Still have my S2k. I've ridden motorcycles since I was young and fly complex aircraft. So what are your credentials? ;)

I have none. I don't even own the car in my sig, it's really an AT! Caught!

Zteve 03-26-2014 07:10 AM

wow this thread sure went to crap. too many trying to swing their eWang over what transmission is better.

Chuck33079 03-26-2014 07:14 AM

I'm shocked this thread hasn't been merged with the existing Manual Vs. Auto dumping ground. Or just locked.

Z eliminator 03-26-2014 07:17 AM

Let the truth be known " the Z can not drive a stick "
or drive a road course with the Z
Buy give me a 1/4 mile at the track and 7 AT in MM.
A match made in heaven.

Just wait till I get the 4.2 from GTM and go for the N/A, 1/4 mile time with bolt on's.
The stock 7 AT will be back in the car for this,
11.85's coming soon.
It does not matter if its a 7 AT or a 6 MT , We all drive 370Z's
and that's all that counts.
Z

FPenvy 03-26-2014 07:35 AM

ok so it's obvious which side of the arguement i'm backing but......

which ever side you're on, 6MT or 7AT, i will say this: you cannot deny (if you've tried one) the fact that the 7AT that the 370 uses is an amazing set-up. i've driven many other "sports" cars with similar power/engines with paddle shiftable autos and they are garbage. recently picked up a 2013 camaro with the V6 and auto tranny to flip. tried the paddles and it was awful. it would take 2-3 seconds to shift at high rpm's and going down a gear sucked as well. been in a few other sporty cars with paddles or slap sticks and the story is the same.

in the end if you've ever tried a 7AT Z they you realize how amazing the set-up is and how well it works.

so for the sake that we drive the same car and the car has one of the greatest auto-manual transmissions, i say you 6MT superior idiots just let it go. can we just enjoy the fact that our car as a whole is superior to others?

lets stop beating the dead horse already and move on as a community.......to go and make fun of ricers and FR-S/BR-Z owners.

kenchan 03-26-2014 07:58 AM

AT is for people that cant drive.
MT is for poor people.

I love MT but have a modded AT.

Rational: when drinking and 'should not drive' that leaves my fiance at the wheel who cannot drive a MT. I have been stuck places many times with a car that we cannot drive to get home. Very frustrating.

So now all I buy is AT so she can drive when Im not able too.

Also, I'm not sure if I would ever buy an MT again. My modded out ZR thus far has been far superior then many coupe MT on the dyno with the mods that I have.

Dont get me wrong- driving a MT is fun for a few minutes. It gives you that race car feel for sure. But Atlanta traffic and long distances I would rather have a AT.

just my .02

you do wat you need to do. my 3 cars are all MT and dd is MT. i personally think MT is easier to drive in congestion vs AT.

Austonian 03-26-2014 11:25 AM

7at>6mt

Chuck33079 03-26-2014 11:26 AM

So everybody's back to "the one I bought>the other one"? Isn't that the case with everything? :rofl2:

In my opinion, the only worthy modification to do on an automatic is to convert it to manual.

They do it to turn it into a real sports car.

I have personally converted a few 240z's and a Volvo 244 from auto to manual.
