My first car was an old unmarked cop car -- an '81 Dodge Diplomat that cost for 400 bucks from a police auction. I was 18, and a senior in HS.
The car had no interior handles in the back seat (guess why), and the glovebox was gutted (for the police radio, which had been removed). I found a booklet on interrogation procedures stuffed in there. As a kid, that discovery was cool as ****. Anyway, if I had the money (or. more to the point, parents with the money) to buy me a new Z while I was in HS, I can only imagine that what ever extent to which I am (at least occasionally) a douchebag now would have been magnified by 10,000x having been lucky enough to be granted such a privilege before I was even 18. Actually, I knew a dude in college (the following year) and he had a new 300zx, and he was a spoiled douchebag. So, yeah, at least in my experiences, I find that people who have nice, new, shiny luxuries handed to them tend to be spoiled cocks as kids, and then hopefully reign it in over time (but frequently don't). If that commentary offends anyone who had such good fortune, sorry. But I have to ask: Are you humble, grateful, hardworking, considerate, and willing to help others who have less, or were you just tooling around, joy riding without care in the car mommy and daddy bought you? Do you care about others now, reflecting on the lucky dice roll you had, or do you pretty much figure everyone who is/was doing without must just not be working hard enough. Just sayin'. That said, if you are in HS currently, and somehow cobble together the money to get the car on your own, then bully for you, and be a nice guy/girl, and give your friends a lift every now and then. I'm sure they'll appreciate it. |
I know it wouldnt have changed me, thats not true, big change, id probably be dead. That being said Ive loved sports cars since I was 5 (went to a Porsche dealership with dad), had friends in HS with 928's and 911's, was always so into the car, tech stuff, i never really said to myself, "oh man he is so cool cuz Sean has a 930 Turbo". I just thought...what an awesome machine, etc.

A slow car in high school is a big part of why I made it out of high school. If I had a stock Z then, it would have been ugly. If I had my Z then, I wouldn't live through the test drive. VDC won't save you from some dumb ****.

B. yes everybody would hate me |
I purchased my Z at age 18, now 20. I drove it through my senior year only.
A. You be different (more confident, "stuck-up," happy go lucky, etc.)? -It never really gave me any extra confidence, it was just fun to drive :) Always wanted a Z. B. Or how might others treat you differently? -I wasn't what they call "popular" I had my same group of friends throughout the year. No one really knew who I was so they never associated that sexy Z in the parking lot with that random guy. I always got out early also, so no one ever saw me leave in it. Until one day there was a group of like 12 dudes chilling around my car in the parking lot?? A few of them knew me and kept asking if this was my car blah blah. Just drove off after that. Sorry for the story! |

I wanted a 350z really bad back in 2010 in high school but, i ended up driving a 08 Altima 3.5SE the thing was fun and it was fast compared to what others had but i never even scratched the thing i loved my car, probably cause i bought it myself........
so having a 370z back then, i would have loved it and everything ... but would of been the same except faster and no backseats lol i had same girlfriend throughtout high school so nothing different there.... |

;) wow, 3.5L in highschool... |

LOL i fixed it as soon as i saw it .... man your quick you got me on that one and yea i loved that Altima it was super nice |

wow, quite a contrast to the pos civic i had... :ugh2: :D
 |
I would have been dead if I had my 370 back in HS... not that the 370 existed back then. Same as if my Ducati 848 had been my first motorcycle. Some EMT would have picked me up off of the road with a spatula.:ugh2:

I had a 454 black SS truck that was given to me by my dad In 2000. I graduated in 03. I took it for granted and was childish and wrecked it. Lol but if I had my z that I paid for then it I probably would have babied it.
|
a. Would have definitely been dead or in a wheel chair, I squeezed every last bit of horsepower out of the 4 cyl eclipse that I drove.
b. would definitely lose the V card, probably also dead. |
I don't think I'd be any different. My car doesn't define who I am but is rather an extension of my personality. I would've had more fun because of the power, but it probably would've gotten me into trouble at the same time. I had a Nissan Sentra and still racked up a handful of tickets before I was 21. She wasn't fast but she was loaded with suspension goodies (and of course the obligatory audio system overhaul). Man I miss that car. This was when I really got into Nissan.

Thank goodness I didn't. Probably would be crippled or not around today and worse yet, might have invovled some other innocent people with me.
Nothing wrong with humble beginnings (started with a beat up 69 Toyota Corona for $80 and probably paid $40 too much!:icon17:). Makes me truly appreciate all the material creature comforts I've been able to acquire along the way! |
I had a 280ZX in highschool, which I still own 15 years later. It gave me a lot of respect from the Honda and import guys but never did much else for me (I didn't really get a sports car for the "status" reason anyways).
Now... once I got a little bit older, the car got a little bit older and was over 20 years old, it certainly had an impact on some of the ladies going out to the bars at night. I pulled up to a stoplight and some girl walking down the street on a Friday night, probably not realizing my window was open asked her friend if "that car" was a Porsche or a Jaguar... she hesitated for a second and said "definitely a porsche" :icon18: Also of note, Cougars have amazing flashbacks when you blast Duran Duran in the car or the soundtrack to Miami Vice with the T-Tops off, but now I am well off topic of talking about the car in highschool. |
Yes I would have been even more of a douche back in highschool and I probably would have blown my motor.
I had the fastest car in highschool(GST spyder eclipse pushing 230whp), and I was a douche, granted if I had my Z back then, I probably wouldn't have earned money with street racing cause no one would want to run me lol. |
Being that I am also of the class of 00', the current Z at the time was the 300ZX. Arguably, i think the reactions would have been the same, regardless of which car we are talking about.
A. Walking with the assumptions that I could travel back in time and give my old self my car, I probably would have been at least a little more confident. Stuck-up, not really. I tend to be pretty humble unless I am dealing with a stuck-up ***. Then my ego tends to flare up pretty quick. B. I would like to think so, but honestly it might not have made a difference. As was said before, even a nice car will only get you so far. Would I be dead? There's always the chance, but I would like to think not. My first car was an 88' Chrysler Lebaron coupe (with the 2.5L I4). Not a screaming demon by any means, but it looked sporty enough to get some nods. There was also the 110mph race down the highway that I managed to pull of pretty well. That car is long since dead. Tried to pass a farming dump truck on a two-lane road, only to find out that he was going to turn left and his turn signals didn't work (come to think of it, his brake lights didn't work either). I didn't get hurt, but my car did. Oh well, story time over. |
