You are young and you are bitten!

You will probably talk yourself into buying a Z, then a newer model z or a Nismo would look appealing and then Hyundai or Honda will come out with a new one or a new Nissan car will come out and you may take a loss yet again.

I happily bought a 2007 Celica GTS, traded it in in 2008 for a 2004 Mazda Rx 8 ibut it had a lot of problems so I traded that in for a 2006 350Z in 2009 and then saw a better 2009 RX8 and bought it in 2011 but the mileage was very low in city driving and a small tank meant I was at gas stations every few days. I traded that one in for a 2010 Miata that gave good mileage in 2012 then saw my 2010 370z I earlier this year and traded it in.

Lots of money lost but the price of passion is high.

My recommendation is to wait till the thought goes away.

Verda7junior 12-11-2013 07:35 PM

I would say to go for the Z and you will love it as long as you don't need a back seat. Big upgrade in looks as long as you get the sport package, and a big horsepower increase over what you have. With the 7AT and a cat back exhaust mine does 13.0@109 in the 1/4. I wonder how the 370Z performance numbers compare with the 345hp 3.8 and the 8 speed auto available in the Genesis.

At the end of the day, it's not all about the power. The Z is sexy as hell though, few things you probably already know but didn't considered it:

>Seats - 2 on Z vs 4 for Genesis. Do you need to occassionally give lifts or relocate/travel a lot? I found the Z annoying when putting my stuff vs my E46 and my E92, you can't fit 2 luggages and a 42 inch TV on it.

>Trunk - like the Seats, I don't care what people say you can't fit **** bigger than a golf bag or 4 backpacks - no bueno unless you don't care objects flying back to the cockpit after hard breaking.

>Maintenance - mods will be a little pricier, you'll start being anal with oils you use, tires will be pricier, gas consumption will be higher.

I'm not trying to push you away from a Z, this is merely my experience since I always impulse buy my vehicles without researching. Bottom line, don't rush it.

Now if you like it, things you need to do:

>Pricing - find out if a local Nissan or CarMax has a better price regardless if your are purchasing out right or financing. Our forum have vendors and sponsors, you may want to drive or fly out if someone here can hook you up.

>Trim - I strongly recommend Touring Sport w/ Nav or at least base w/ Sport Package - SRM or SyncRev Match is the ****! And those calipers look hawt!

>Color - If you are top bottom, might as well get something you'll appreciate. Like me, I got a 40th but didn't realized I wanted a yellow or red one.

>Nismo - I didn't include this on the trim as I highly regard the Nismo line. If you can do Nismo, do it. Don't listen to the bullcrap people say. Nismo is Nismo, you might end up considering buying these parts later.

>Your car - need to start parting your Genesis while it's new and early.

>Finances - since you considered the Z, make sure there is no looking back. This car will leech you lol.

None the less, the Z and Genesis I think are both awesome cars. Good luck on you decision OP!

Did some testing of the 3.8 Touring, auto and 6 speed R-SPEC. The R-SPEC is the obvious "performance" model. However, I was a hair away from pulling the trigger on a 13 Touring. For the money, the interior is really beautiful and comfortable. I just wanted something more in line with the performance of a 370. While quick, the 3.8 in any flavor, is not quite in the same performance territory as a 370.

An older model 2.0 is that bad to a car guy. To the average Joe, its simply a car.

OP

I know some in here may find this blasphemous, but NO car is worth going into deeper debt or losing money over. Zs don't pay the bills, money does. Keep it in your pocket and keep the Gen as I am sure that thing has a good warranty and will last you a while. If you drop back to an 09 or a 2010Z, you may not know what your getting or what problems you may be inheriting.
Z's are reliable, but with used you never know.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah i initially was looking into 13 3.8 gen coupe before I got the Z but they were kinda hard to come by and not really discounting at the time.

The 3.8 is about as quick as the z in straightline stats, but yeah Z is better handler. But if someone is looking for just a daily driver street car nothing wrong with 3.8 genesis performance.

luigi90210 12-12-2013 03:03 PM

i drove the genesis coupe 3.8 track once, hated it, what i hated even more was the fact that the salesman told me it would be faster and better than my 370z...

on paper, yes its close, but in real life, the genesis feels a lot slower to my Z and when i test drove one, my Z was stock and a lot of that has to do with gearing for the genesis coupe as well as weight

the genesis coupe isnt a bad car though, i have considered getting a 2012 2.0T track edition used as a DD since they are super cheap(12k)

Bought it new and have done just a few mods thus far. I love the car and it feels pretty fast without putting down crazy numbers. Buttttt, I look at the 370z and get a cream in the jeans feeling knowing that stock it will put mine to shame even with the mods I've done lol. There are a few problems with this idea though. First, the Hyundai depreciates like a mother and I'll be lucky to get a decent deal for trade in. Anddd second, I still owe 19 on her. With that being said, I'd have to trade mine in on an older model if I did. I've done a good bit of research and have found a few 09's for good deals but I feel like it may be a terrible idea to trade back three years and 10,000 miles yet still find myself actually thinking about doing it lol. Opinions?? Has anyone else taken the plunge and traded back on a relatively new vehicle for a different beast?

That's cause I don't need to,
Unless you have $20k in cash you can't do a thing. Going back, going forward, NOTHING!!!!

You don't really need $20k, I'm just making the point that you'll NEVER get financing for buying a Z & paying off your Hyundai, unless you HAVE & willing to PUT DOWN & LOOSE a bunch of money......

Numbers are all over the place for both, but yea, butt says Z is noticeably faster. I mean #'s are close on paper for straight line, relatively anyway, the Z IS faster on paper and in real world, BUT driving dynamics, the Z FEELS MUCH faster. Handling, its in a different league That being said, I might be buying one for fun, for a cushy, powerful DD. Along side the Volvo S60 and Accord. I have issues.

zguynate 12-13-2013 11:43 AM

I bought the Genesis brand new and it has 40k miles on it now. My wife drives the Genesis mostly (she loves it lol) but when I drive it I feel like something isnt right. Its lacking something that the Z has. It just feels numb compared to the Z. Depending on what you want in life in the near future (3-5 years) should really be the main determining factor of your decision.

The Z is inconvenient in a few places:
1) Seating - It sucks when you only have 2 seats in real life situations. Performance cars yes, daily drivers it can be a pain.

2) Storage - hahaha

3) Insurance - When you're young and you own a Z, get ready to take it in the rear.

These are things that are a given however when you own a real sports car. The return is that awesome feel when you drive it.

with the nav, 10 speakers, power seats, sunroof this car is cheaper than the base Z.

maybe you have a touring Z? i love my touring nav Z's interior but compared to the base, the genesis is quite nice for the price.

I do have a touring Z, but I dont have nav. I was mostly talking more about the quality of the plastics/leather in the Genesis. It is noticeably cheaper than the Z. No doubt the design is nice on the newer Genesis though. Also IMO, the Genesis is a good car for the price, I definitely agree with you there. I have had literally zero problems out of mine since I bought it. Its a 3.8 R-Spec. If we/ my wife didnt like it so much we would have sold it by now lol.

Right next to the Z, Volvo and Honda. I love 1st world problems. All of you, hush up, I just renewed my monthly donation to st Judes, think i bought a dog from that McLaughlin chick too.

Ahh yea well, $60K worth of cars in the garage, in a house we own, typing this on one of four (maybe more, I give so many computers away) laptops in a house occupied by two, $1900 a year in donations is the LEAST I could do, and is. I give back in other non focused monetary ways, which is so much fun most of the time. So thank you for thanking me, bu dont, I CAN and SHOULD do much more. Everyone on this website probably can and should.

Edit: Not that i think $60K worth of cars is "balling" or anything like that (nor care), no one NEEDS $60K worth of cars. I have everything I need and a lot of what I want, Im very selfish though. Im not rich, Im..not religious but blessed would be the word. When I win the $400 mega millions 70% goes to charity, then setup family, a few friends and retire with a 911 Turbo S.

alcheng 12-14-2013 01:34 AM

there's nothing wrong with buying a Gen.coupe or even a prius when you set the bar/standard lower than the lower level basement... :icon17:

Firebase99 12-14-2013 05:14 PM

Alcheng...LOL, what? have you driven a loaded 3.8, track or Touring? Loaded interior is nice!! I cant think of any car, coupe, that gives ALL that for under $35K. I mean the interior is REALLY nice for that price. Nicer than ANYTHING Ive sseen for that price with 348HP. No, its not a nimble, juiced rocket, but thats what I like. Im not selling my 370, fricking LOVE it, its just so....focused. Bitch is brutal, and so much fun. I figure with the Gen, instead of taking my wifes plushy, oh-so-comfy Volvo S60 or the ten year old Accord LX, I can drive the Gen. Im at work AT 530 in the morning, the Z seems so hardcore at 530. Driving home though...its a blast.

I dont know what genisis owners are doing where you guys live but over here in Canada there is not 1 car left that has a hyundai H-logo. They all have replaced the H with the wings logo. I find it absolutely hilarious that these people would spend all that money on a brand they are ashamed to showcase.

gleis25 12-15-2013 02:06 AM

Or it could be the fact that the H doesn't look as good as the wing emblem. You are aware that the wings still represent Hyundai and the Genesis right?

agree with Mr.XxACExX, but I thought the wing logo is OEM too, no?

XxACExX 12-15-2013 09:48 AM

The genesis wings emblem started over in korea to try and generate more interest. With just a simple badging change they successfully garnered more of the market share. The genesis wings logo is not put on these cars in north america straight from the manufacture, rather you have to either order one from korea or buy an aftermarket one here.

My GC came with the wings badge from the dealer. To be honest I liked the H emblem better but my wife wanted the one with the winged badge. Happy wife happy life lol.

Changing the emblem isn't due to the owners being ashamed of the car lol. They do it because they like it and its a very popular mod. It's about the same thing as putting the GTR start button on our cars. There's really no reason other than its a different color. Same mindset with the winged badge. The badge still says genesis on it.

Your car came from the dealer equipped with the badge because your dealer had it put on before you even set foot in the dealers. If you read my post again i said clearly from the manufacture not dealer. I honestly like the genesis as a car and if hyundai ever manages to fully capture consumer confidence, like they initially had many years ago as a brand, i will buy one then. Until this happens i refuse to be raped on the plummeting depreciation figures.

Which is the reason I said from the dealer and not manufacturer. I read your post clearly the first time. I'm saying that some people didn't put the emblems on themselves like you insinuate.

I drove the r-spec and Touring. Was impressed with the Touring interior. No offense, but after being a Z car guy forever, the r-spec didnt do much for me. Its the performance of the Touring without what I want the Touring for. I want 90% Z performance, same CLOSE two seat relationship, with the interior, all the bells and whistle for $35K. Gen, 3.8 Touring is the only thing I can think of. Next up is 115% Z performance with the plush...911, $100 grand. That wont be happening.
