OBD II scanner/reader
I'm looking to pick up either kiwi w/ dashcommand or a physical scanner. What's the general consensus for physical obd II scanners vs plx kiwi wifi 2 and software?
I'm really only using it to check codes and to check system readiness. |
I bought this:
Amazon.com: Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for OBDII Vehicles: Automotive And it works to check and clear codes w/o issue. Quick, concise. |
I bought a cheap ELM wi-fi and dashcommand. There's a slight lag, but right now I'm only using it for fun like you seem to plan on. To be honest, when I'm really looking at it, by the time I can look over at the display it's probably caught up to what I'm doing anyway. You can check out the set up in my build link below.
and I did a DIY on putting an iPad mini in the cubby here http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...nto-cubby.html |
I have the Kiwi bluetooth and that works great with the TORQUE (andriod)app. I have also used it for dash command on my pc for some logging. But since i have an iphone(wifi kiwi needed), now i dont use it as much. Since i live in CT and you live in MA. I am willing to sell it. Just PM me.

Same here I got one for sale too if you have an android. I switch to iPhone and need a different one

I use a ScanGuageII (plugs straight into the OBD port) for reading/clearing DTCs and real-time monitoring of speed, water temp, IAT and one more param depending on what I am interested in at the time. For logging, I bought an ELM-based OBD-to-USB adapter that I connect to a laptop. I can also read/clear DTCs with the software but it's easier to use the ScanGuage. The ScanGuage runs about $160 dollars, so that may not be the best option for you. The OBD-to-USB adapter was $20-30, I already had the laptop laying around, and I downloaded the software for free. |
i use a standalone obd2 reader... cause i bought it before smartphones came into existence. :icon17:
wat is android? that was an awesome game in the 80's. |

I don't want to spend $90 for kiwi and $10 for dashcommand if it's not going to do the job of $100 obdII scanner. |
I use a $15 ELM327 and it works fine.
|
I use a cheap 20$ bluetooth ELM327 as well. I hooked it up to my factory nav using an mk808b (mini android device), HDMI to RGB converter, and the Torque app. Would be nice to have a HDMI to GVIF adapter for a better display, but those suckers are 200$ or more.
|
The torque app works wonders with diagnostics. I have ran down vacuums leaks in my wife's car, and a bad fuel injector on my friends wrx. But I only used dash command on my PC for data logging. So that is unknown territory for me. I can screw around with it tonight though.

I purchased new TPMS' put in on my new wheels so I didn't have to deal with all of that. :icon17: |
I had a set of TPMS from a set of base model wheels I had installed in my new wheels, now it's throwing the light
|
I've been running on my race wheels (no TPMS) for a couple of weeks waiting on my new wheels. I thought it would re-set when put on my new wheels with sensors, maybe not.

I'll ask my buddy that did my wheels when he's awake. Still way too early for anyone here. :icon17: Except the me... |

maybe the tireshop broke the transmitters on cruzthepug's wheels... :eekdance: |
The TPMS I had put in my new wheels were from a base model set of wheels I bought used, didn't come on my car. I don't remember them throwing the light the couple of times I used them before removing the TPMS, maybe they did. I think I just need to reset everything so the will start communicating.
|
hummm.. tpms needs to be paired (sync'ed?) manually to the car so not sure how the wheels that weren't on your car from factory paired to the system.

That's the thing, I'm not sure now after putting on the new wheels that they did work before when I had the wheels on my car. I guess I just didn't notice the light. Only had them on while doing some autocross events, so really wasn't looking at the dash like I would have been just driving around town. Now they need sync'ed |
btw, are those tpms from a '13 or '14? cause i read nissan changed the tpms since 2012 or something. i dont remember which model year.

Hmmm, don't know. I bought them through the classifieds on here. I'll have to see if I can find that thread. |

I found the thread and sent a message to the guy I got them from to find out. |
yah, hope you have the ones that work on your car. otherwise i would just swap them out for some standard metal stems.

If not, I'll jut deal with looking at the light. Put some tape over it :) |
on my nismo wheels im running rays' metal valve stems. looks good and more reliable than standard rubber stems.

where it was in the cluster unless im really looking for it. wat i did was found a countersunk screw with head diameter about the size of the tpms light. then i cleaned the screw head, place a piece of e-tape on it, and trimmed around the screw head with scissors for a perfectly round circle. then used a thin L- picktool and walla. :D |

Am I doing something wrong? I know the unit works, because I plugged it into my Jeep and it scanned everything perfectly. |
