Goodbye All

I and a couple other folks were just talking about this at a car show last week. We all arrived at independent conclusions that the Vette just looks "tired". Yes

I and a couple other folks were just talking about this at a car show last week. We all arrived at independent conclusions that the Vette just looks "tired". Yes there may be some new colors and interior changes but......its almost as if GM has a cookie-cutter "design" formula for the Vette and they are very comfortable with repeating it year after year after year.....

We also came to the conclusion that the Ford Mustang is entering down this same "tired" design road as well.

They were supposed to have a change for (going off old memory) 2010-ish, but I read something that they will squeeze a few more years out of the current design due to the economy.

That's because GM has this habit of never wanting to pay for the retooling of their plants when a design change has been proposed. This is business as usual for GM.

Great choice. Can't go wrong with an '08+ C6.

One question, though...any reason you went with a fully-loaded Z51 instead of a 1LZ Z06 for not much more?

Not quite.

All this talk about "tired" design...the Z has essentially been the same since '03. The C6 went through a significant re-design in '05, much more so than the Z34 over the Z33.

????? The 370Z is completely different in almost every aspect compared to the 350Z.....

Anyhow good luck with your new Vette. Personally if I was going into that territory I'd be getting a Z06. But then again if I had any inkling that way I WOULD have bought a Z06.... but the Z really is my dream car.

The Corvette is one of the only American cars I like.

Thank you all for the good wishes.

Even the few sarcastic comments were taken in stride.

I chose the coupe over the Z06 for 2 reasons:
  1. I had a Z06 in 2007. Very difficult car for daily driving. The power and the snappy handling are a bit over the top for DD duty.
  2. I actually prefer the feel of the base coupe over the Z06
Anyway, I've had a lot of great cars and I always go back to the Vette and 911.

For those saying the Vette is stale or dated, I think you are crazy. Vettes, like Zs and Porsches etc..., evolve slowly. These cars have loyal fan bases that don't want drastic change. 911s have looked the same for 40 years for g-d's sake.

I also agree that interior is the weak point for the Vette. The thing is that when you mash the go pedal, you just go!!! It makes you forget the interior .

Again, I'm a huge fan of the Z, amazing what Nissan was able to do at this price point. Just different strokes for different folks.

I learned how to drive stick on a 454 'Vette ... in 1972. Just about the only vehicle that has evolved slower, from an outside appearance, is a diesel-electric locomotive.

To me the Vette shows almost everything that's wrong with General Motors Corporation. The word is ... "ossify". It's one thing to stick to tradition, but if we all wanted stuff from our earlier years we'd probably be driving Checkers Marathons.

I've always loved the Vette too, especially the split rear-window 1962. But to buy one in 2009 is to tell this giant company it doesn't HAVE to evolve. To me there is just no reason in the universe they shouldn't have this Volt out on the street already -- two weeks after announcing it.

The SPLIT WINDOW COUPE was the 1963 Corvette.

I agree with you; the C5 to C6 change is very much on par with the Z33 to Z34 change.

I don't know if I would go quite that far, but it is indeed a difference.

I am not talking about "tired" in the sense of immediately adjacent model styles to the next. I am talking about overall in the entire history of the car itself. When one looks at a Vette no matter what ancestral generation one does not have a doubt it is a Vette. GM's goal was to brand the look.

I don't believe Nissan has necessarily had that in mind to the same extent as GM has as the Z has really gone through some "look" changes over the years. The design differences have for the most part been all sufficiently different enough to cause people to have to take a close look to verify and in their minds that they are looking at a Z. The only Z 's that have experienced little design difference between themselves have been the 350Z and the 370Z.

So this is what I mean when I say the design is "tired". The design branding of the look compared to the Z is too set into stone for the Vette. And as I said before it is starting to happen with the Mustang as well.

.

I think you may have forgotten the 240z, 260z, and 280z. Very minor differences between those years, even less so than the 350z to 370z when talking about looks.

240Z-280Z -> 280ZX -> 300ZX (Z31) -> 300ZX (Z32) -> 350Z (Z33) at the very least are big changes even if you don't think the Z33 -> Z34 is a big change....

I think the 70-early 80's Stingray was the last super sexy Corvette. It has some serious curves!
