Stopping the mods...
No, I don't mean the moderators on here-they do an awesome job...
But modding a car. I find that as my car gets older (year and a half now) and more miles, I kind of lose interest in doing things to it. There are things that I'd still like to do & all, but just not the drive I had when I first got it. Hell, I had a whole shop full of stuff I'd ordered for it before I even took delivery. I know a lot of guys keep going until the day they sell it, but I'd wondering if anyone else feels this way about it, that you just kind of lose interest in customizing it once it gets a little older? |

Its reality setting in. The problem with the sports cars or having a really nice new luxury car is that they all eventually turn into old used cars and are simple transportation, taking you from point A to point B.
A sports car can not really be appreciated unless you can drive it fast to its full potential and the only legal and safe way to do that is on the track, unless you live in Germany. So when your driving your sports cars, or luxury sedan down the road and little econo car pulls alongside you and your both doing the legal speed limit, getting from point A-B you have to say to yourself, is all the extra time money, mods and expense really worth it, for just driving down the road. Reality and Money are a rude awakening ! |
I've had my fun since owning a new 350Z at 21, and selling it for the 370Z 6 years later. After picking up a daily ('99 Accord Sedan), I don't really miss my Z as much. I'm tired of trying to keep it perfect. As for luxury cars, I don't really care much about it. After living in my own pad for 1.5 years, priorities changed. Car payments are tiresome, so I'm not looking forward to the next $30k car. I'm finally taking a break after paying off my Z.
Granted, I love the turbos with this car. After a brief spirited drive one night, I've decided all this power can get quite scary at some point. As of last week I've not driven the Z as much. It's nice to drive it once in awhile on the weekends, but at this point I don't know if I'm going to keep it. It's tough to let go. |
Age/Mods
I'm 43. I knew the 370Z has a much younger audience. I had people tell me to get an Infinity because its a "Date" Car so I can find a wife; 370z will make me look immature. I figured fvck it I will get what I want while I am single. In the end I decided replace my unreliable BMW Z4 with a 370z.
No need to mod it. Its out performs 99% of cars I pass on my commute. :excited: I gotten lots of compliments on it too. |
Maybe once it's finished I'll get bored with it. I've never finished a project car, so that would be a new feeling. It just drives so damn good, I can't imagine getting rid of it.

It's not necessarily the lack of desire, it's the shock and disappointment at the price tag of things (whether modding import or domestic, **** is still expensive).
Do I want to make it magazine worthy? Sure, but I could buy another car as a DD for the price I'm going to spend to get it that way. Not worth it IMO. I'll save that money for vacation or other things. |

i just save up for the next car. :) |
Gradually acquiring mods keeps my interest piqued. I don't have a bunch of extra funds to throw at mods, so it happens slowly over time. Getting intimate while detailing her and trying out new products is always fun, too
I haven't really done much since I got a tune and some new front rotors and pads and some laps at the track back in June. However, a recent thorough detailing and a TWM short shifter install last weekend, has got me going again. RJM clutch pedal assembly is next on the list :excited: (too bad I think it's going to be Christmas before I get it :() Regardless of mods, we've put over 40K miles on the Z, enjoying every minute. The Z is my cup of coffee every morning :driving: |
im planning to keep this car and will soon make it to track car so constant modding for me :-)
|
I'd be lying if I said I've never thought about what I could do with the several hundred dollars/mth I'd have if I had gotten something with better mileage and insurance rates. You just have to decide where you want to spend your money

Ya it really does suck spending thousands on bolts to make your car faster, yet still lose to a stock mustang gt 5.0 that costs less.. This car is basically twin turbo or bust and with that kind of money you better be a Z diehard.

I'm 55 and my last mod was three mods ago!
Every time I think I'm finished - or sadly more recently disgusted with the additional work/headaches/cost a mod creates - I get over it at some point and try something else. I guess it's what keeps me interested in the car. I have to admit though, I really am closing in on the point where there isn't really much left I would like to do. I am NOT touching the motor since I have the Nissan 7yr/125k warranty. |
I have no debt in the world minus my car loan. I pay $463 a month for the car, $143 for insurance a month, $85 for a cell phone, and $350 for rent. So, I don't mind modding my 370 and having fun with it.
I even only drive approximately 2.4 miles to work and then back. But it makes road trips and those few moments I can really get on the throttle all the worthwhile. Plus the sound alone was solely worth it. But that's just my two pennies on it. |

I modified my car for a purpose, to drive at the track a full 30 minutes without incident. This goal was achieved.
Oddly I had to fight the urge to continue to spend money on mods. Modding for mods sake. I have two I've bought without installing. A back up cam and new clutch springs. The urge mostly went away and I still love what I've modded. Age of the car is not what prevents me. My age and wisdom kick in first and I stop myself. |

I am 49 now I want to spend time enjoying vehicles not working on them. I feel like I did enough of that in my younger days. I still do mods but keep them simple and quick. If I want a faster car I buy a faster car. If I want a car that handles better I buy one that does. I don't try to polish turds anymore or try to make a car something it's not. I enjoy them for what they are and personalize them now.

I like to mod but only small stuff. I'll leave the TT to the younger crowd. I do love to see the mods here though, don't get me wrong. |
Saw this thread and immediately could relate. We all fall in love and occasionally out of love with our cars. I for one seem to have consistently replaced my sports cars with the DD only to find myself back in a sports car again. Lesson learned - Its not the car - Its us. We are car people period. But like any good addiction, car addicts only can go so long before the craving strikes again. Change up sports cars if you need to but always stay true to your passion.

I still love modding my car more then ever, Hell I just ordered a set of sways:tup:

I was slowly working on mine, and had a few more small mods planned for the near future. BUT, I decided to put my extra money and time into restoring my old 65 Chevy truck, so my Z mods came to an abrupt stop.
|
I bought my Z because it unique, among other things I like about it. It's not a car you see in this area every time you're on the road so I really don't have an incentive to personalize or "mod" it. I'm happy with it 100% stock, even though I do see a FI CBE in it's future someday.

wondering how do you do your planning when modding a car... do you: 1) just go to the shop or web and buy whatever is on the shelf and dump them in your car? or 2) you mod the part/area that you think it needs to be modded?? that makes the whole story and experience totally different. |
I'm 50 and can relate to Foundtainhead, that I don't see a TT in my future or an Amuse body kit. I still like to do mods though and am constantly looking for what is out on the market..

Personally, I like the car the way it is and don't plan on doing any mods. Being 62 years old, I have other priorities like travel and buying new camera stuff to go along with the travel. That's me. If I was 28 I'd have a whole different outlook on life. As you get older your priorities change and that's cool. Nobody's saying modding your car's a bad thing. It's all what you like and what you're willing to spend your limited resources on. |
I'm getting older now too, 48. I think I am over serious modding at this point, mainly because I never keep a car more than a couple years, and its a never ending cycle. But, I think I may be getting over that (but don't hold me to it).
As for the Z, I'm done modding it, because basically, now that its a racecar, I've done everything I need to it to make it work the way I want. Should the engine ever go, I will replace with a V8, and as any other parts fail, I will replace with better upgraded ones if available, but I won't be replacing or upgrading just to upgrading any more. On my other cars, I think after a supercharged 350z and supercharged C6, I'll just stick to no more then a CAI, Exhaust, springs and wheels. Back to basics for me. |
The only way ill stop modding is if I sell the car. So ill keep going. :roflpuke2:

OP -- different experiences for each us. Shift in priorities, lack of interest, things change. Hope you rediscover your passion for it. |
