In neutral do not coast with the clutch in. While approaching stopped traffic use the gears to assist in (sudden) braking. The GF was wrong to put you in a gear but you should have been in gear already. From 6th to N to a stop.

well usually when i drove auto she would hold my hand so im guessing she went by instinct and went for my hand. and what happened was i dropped into neutral then let off clutch to brake but mind you i was only going like 35mph ish.
