If all our helper springs are removed, will it be a circle tug? :icon14:

JungleZ 06-25-2013 12:16 PM

I will challenge anyone here that I can shift quicker than you

UNKNOWN_370 06-25-2013 12:20 PM

I rather jerk mine than tug anyday.

Well, since I can't use the mouse with my left hand, I guess the decision was made for me.

Never understood how that works. I mean, wouldn't you want to use your power hand for better grip and handling? Why would you use your non-dominant hand? Unless you're ambidextrous..

I mean... :wtf2:

I'm talking about holding the steering wheel!! :D

wow!!!! just got home from work cant believe all the great input... i did not sleep all night...at 2:30 am i decided i am not going to get
the Z because its like a coffin and you cant see properly out of it where the miata is open, spacious and even has a Trunk. but now i am thinking i can learn everything a miata can be in 30 days...where a Z i will probably still be learning up to the end of the lease. why get auto if it has sync downshifts with the sports package

how my passenger is going to feel with her head rocked back and fourth every time we stop. so maybe this is not the car for me...i was buying with the sport package and downshift was Beautiful...i told them i will sleep on it

Yea 1st gear is tough, takes lots of practice, and if you're shifing on low rpms' you need to let rpms go down before you shift, so you depress the clutch and wait a second then shift, on high rpms it doesn't matter.

The auto shifts MUCH faster and you still have the control like a manual to downshift and upshift when you want.

And if you're NOT going forced induction, IMO, it's THE transmission to get

Bottom line on the clutch: Any clutch that holds power is gonna be rough. Try a 2 stage. I drove my buddies drag stang the other day and THAT bitch was clunky. However, I have never peeled out in all 5 gears before, so its a trade off. But sounds like you have made up your mind anyways sooooo...
Btw how did this thread get so off track haha?

A friend gave me a spring for free... yes, it is a lot better than stock... but no spring at all is best. Verify you like it, then remove the entire assembly.

Don't be surprised if you shed a tear or two, especially when you realize you could have spent the last 4 years with clutch feel if you did it right when you bought the car.

Hey m4, if I do take out the OEM spring, what difference does it make?

You can feel again. One Republic wrote a song about the helper spring.

The Miata is a sports car. Good pick.

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 10:37 AM

They're fun little cars. I'm guessing you're talking about visibility with the top down? My sister's miata is impossible to see out of with the top up.

It was concluded that the spring is needed to keep it from getting damaged, there needs to be something in there to keep it all together. I would get the spring, it is 75% lighter and about as good as no spring... It's only $15 shipped on eBay.

Where was it "concluded" that it is needed to prevent damage? There has been nothing but speculation on the board and no one has been able to produce concrete evidence that no spring is potentially damaging.

Haven't had any issues with mine w/o the spring.

tjlazer 06-26-2013 04:13 PM

read up on the thread, it's just common sense that if you remove it, and the parts are loose that wear and tear can damage it. Do whatever you want, it's your car man. I'm not taking chances, the spring keeps it all in place snugly. And is very much an improvement and it was concluded that it's just as effective as no spring. So why remove it (with risk of damage), to save $15? This isn't a Civic. Do it right.

Haboob 06-26-2013 04:15 PM

There's nothing loose under there either. The spring didn't do much of anything except kick the peddle up faster, thus making it more herky-jerky when shifting.

I appreciate your concern, and I have read all the threads. Again, there is no conclusive evidence that there is any harm being done by removing the helper assembly. It's only speculation, and speculation does not mean common sense.

I have run both no spring and aftermarket spring. There is definitely more feedback without the spring than with the reduced strength aftermarket spring. So there is definitely reason to run without the spring assembly if you prefer how it feels.

My position is, until someone can conclusively prove that it is causing any damage to the clutch assembly then there is no reason for me to worry. I have examined the assembly with and without the spring and there doesn't seem to be any ill affect by running without. This mod is common on the Z and on the G as well, and I have yet to hear of a failure as a result of running without.

My advice would be to try it without. If you like it... great. Run it that way. If you like it but are worried about the limited speculation of possible long term negative effect... buy the weaker spring.

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 07:09 PM

I've had the spring out for 15,000 miles. In a couple of weeks I'm taking the pedal out to swap for the RJM one. I'll look for any areas of potential wear once I get it out. Where should I look?
