Sunday aftermath...

I had to attend an engagement party on Sunday afternoon as the storm rolled in. None of us expected it to get this bad. My goal was to go in for a little bit and then head out, but most guests wouldn't let me leave. It was calm and rainy with some thunder, and then it started to hail big chunks without warning. The winds kicked up as everyone started taking cover inside. Then the rain, hail, and debris started moving horizontally. My ears popped at one point, and some guests said the same. We couldn't see past the garage door as if a train was traveling in front of us. Front window of the house shattered. It was chaos. There was no confirmed tornado where the storm hit us, but there was an EF1 near the airport SW of my city.

Below is some of the hail about an hour after the chaos ended. I picked up several larger ones after this photo was taken. It was definitely larger than golf ball size, but definitely packed some velocity from the winds.

Here's one of several cars with completely shattered windows:

Here's what's left of my car. What's interesting is that the driver side is almost entirely clean of welts. It's just how the car was parked on the street.

Holy cow! Sorry to see that. I assume your insurance will cover the fix???

Jasonle 05-21-2013 08:26 AM

oh man... that sucks ******* ***! Sorry man :(

DIGItonium 05-21-2013 08:27 AM

I filed a claim yesterday morning. I'm pretty sure they're flooded with claims right now. The windshield makes me nervous since it creaks and cracks a few times while I'm driving.

So sad... one thing I don't want to deal with right now, but I was obligated to go. I thought it was going to storm all night, so I thought a quick visit was enough. It's definitely getting lots of attention on the road.

edub370 05-21-2013 08:31 AM

nooooooooo. so sorry to see that man!

this is the most beautiful z i have personally seen, so its rough seeing it like this

Nismo89 05-21-2013 08:34 AM

dang...sucks man...hopefully insurance will cover it

DIGItonium 05-21-2013 08:40 AM

There's this golf ball dent from last year that was going to get fixed in a couple of weeks... some of the hail damage was much deeper. Plus, it cracked the clear. The dent on the passenger fender leaves me speechless.

I have full coverage on this car since it's my only ride, so they'll definitely cover it. I just hope they cut a big enough check to fix all the repairs. Last thing I want on my plate is out of pocket expenses.

red2010z 05-21-2013 08:46 AM

dam that sucks big time. Sorry bossman!

2010ZilverZ 05-21-2013 08:47 AM

:icon14:

That sucks man ... sorry :shakes head:

DIGItonium 05-21-2013 08:48 AM

It's the price to pay for daily driving this car. Plan is to get a daily driver next year, and the car will somewhat become a garage queen. The plan is to finish the power mods and restore the car to a pristine condition when it exits daily driver status. :)

red6spd 05-21-2013 08:55 AM

Sorry man. It adds insult to injury that you had a garage. What do they do with the roof since it cant be replaced?
How does anyone have nice cars in areas like this? I could not deal LOL

red2010z 05-21-2013 08:57 AM

I thought the rule of thumb when it comes to damage with the roof is they total the car. I could be wrong tho.

kenchan 05-21-2013 09:06 AM

DIGI- holy crap! :crying: sorry to see this.

Eek! That's kind of scary as its an easy place to take damage in the Midwest.

urbanate 05-21-2013 09:28 AM

Also. Where are you at op? Only got wind here in lenexa for about 15mins.

JARblue 05-21-2013 09:33 AM

Sorry to hear, Digi. Hope you get everything sorted out quickly and hassle-free :tiphat:

Haboob 05-21-2013 09:35 AM

Hail damage sucks. Sorry to see that. :(

We had a huge hail storm a couple of years ago (for Phoenix, similar to what you just had) and it just had its way with every vehicle.

Luckily, no glass broke or cracked, but my SRT took some shots. I think it was estimated at $1700 to fix, so I just took the check and had them take my deductible out ($500).

I didn't get that damage fixed, but it wasn't as bad as yours.

I'm paranoid now when it storms w/cooler weather and the potential for hail. At least at work and home I'm in a covered garage. My route home now has overpasses that I can stop under, where as previously I had none.

Haboob 05-21-2013 09:35 AM

Though, if it hit car dealerships, the prices will drop drastically on the hail damaged ones. :ugh2:

Tribalpinoy91 05-21-2013 09:39 AM

Thankful we don't get that here in PA

ShutokuZ 05-21-2013 09:54 AM

Sorry to see that man, and hopefully the insurance works it all out with you....

ajc1884 05-21-2013 10:00 AM

:iagree: me too. OMG!

4 Zs down since last Friday...Onzedge and another on the Ohio G CLub FB page, two others on here that I do not recall user IDs...making me fearful of taking mine out of the garage to go to Indy on Thursday. :icon14:

Nope, on this car the roof is replaceable

It was at a friend's house for his engagement party. Lots of guests with lots of cars parked on the street. One of the guys has a G37c parked along the cul de sac. Tail lights busted, deep dents, A-pillar cracked open, etc.

Wichita, KS. The storm spun off an EF1 near the airport, which is in the SW part of town. I was in the NE part of town (near 29th and Oliver) at the time of occurrence. Imagine not being able to see past the garage door. It was like a train was moving swiftly in front of us. It was a blur. They quickly closed the garage door, but the pressure was too great. Rain and hail seeped through from the super strong winds. I can only imaging the velocity of the hail stones traveling horizontally and blasting our cars. Our cars were literally shot peened.

Ziggyman 05-21-2013 11:33 AM

Really sorry to see this! I was bummed out yesterday because of bird sh** on my car. I hope it all works out for you.

mike

zguynate 05-21-2013 12:12 PM

Thats terrible. Keep us updated! I need to hurry up and get another daily.

Cmike2780 05-21-2013 12:39 PM

This is just painful to look at. Don't worry bro, she'll be good as new in no time.

DIGItonium 05-21-2013 12:56 PM

Thanks, all. I'm quite thankful because the situation could've been worse. Not sure when my claim will be processed assuming resources are focused on OK. It's a sad situation over there.

I'll post pictures whenever the car gets fixed up. Nothing fancy... keeping things the same. I do have some water build up in one of my headlights though... slowly drying off :(

WORD! Great attitude. May I add my regrets with your experience. Its life, its a car and we will carry on :) Sounds like you have a great plan to make things better. All the best!

songbong 05-21-2013 02:07 PM

if i saw my car in this condition i would just lay on top of it and cry and say its going to be okay

Tigger 05-21-2013 02:29 PM

My sister's Nissan Versa ( yeah, I know ) got hit with some serious hail in North Carolina. They skinned it and replaced every panel including the roof. Kind of surprising given the value of the car. I'm thinking they may do the same for yours.

Amuse370z 05-21-2013 02:36 PM

...Amuse kit + new vented fenders? ;)

Haha nah, I prefer the stock look with a CF lip kit. Part of the refresh after the car is off daily driver status is to replace the lip kit, renew the front bumper, and add a CF rear diffuser. We have some pretty bad roads and parking lots here, and the Z has endured lots of nasty bumps. The recent one nearly tore the bumper off. This outlook is very far away since there are other priorities at the moment.

critical 05-21-2013 02:56 PM

Wow. That's terrible.

SouthArk370Z 05-21-2013 03:03 PM

:( Good luck with the repairs and insurance.

mdxj 05-21-2013 06:39 PM

My 350 took a beating 2 years ago. Glass somehow survived but the hood, roof, hatch, and pillars were trashed. Insurance should cover it but the hood will probably be replaced out right. A good shop should be able to make it so you never even knew. My 350 looked a lot better then when it was new! Good luck with the repairs, hail sucks which is why I have a second vehicle. Any time there is a threat, the Z stays inside.

GaleForce 05-21-2013 06:44 PM

Unreal! Sorry to see this. Hopefully insurance gets you looked after without much hassle.

roclive75 05-21-2013 07:28 PM

Omg!!!so sorry!!!...I feel for you...keep it positive it will be fixed.
