Dealership FAIL!!

I have been having this ticking coming from under my car for a few days and finally went to the dealership for them to look to see what the problem was. I left my car with them for three hours and they say they cant find the issue. They say every thing sounds normal, so I figured ok well I guess its just one of the quirks of the car. When I would hit the gas I hear *tick and when let off I hear *tick. I thought this was strange but let it go. So today I take my car to treadquarters, to a guy that isnt paid 60 an hour like the nissan techs and doesnt work on nissans all day. Literally it took him 30 seconds to find the issue. listen to this:

370z wheel bearing tick, obvious problems here. - YouTube

So what was the diagnosis? What was the cause and what was the fix?

I am taking the car back to the dealership in the AM. Im hoping that they actually fix it instead of trying to mess with me again, I actually argued with the guy for 30 min that there were problems and he said due to not being able to recreate them there was nothing could be done. Obviously moving the car 6 inches was above their skill level. They also gave me a lecture on how to drive my car :shakes head: Dont know the cause but it needs to be repaired. I was told its def the wheel bearing.

They probably thought it was the clock on the wall ticking.:icon14:

That microphone must be dayum good, cause I've never heard a wheel bearing tick that loudly with a one inch rotation. Looks like a rear wheel to me, so more likely something with the e-brake or rotor.

we looked at a lot of possibilities but the conclusion is almost def the bearing unless there is something obscure that we missed. Either way the dealership should have caught this as I told them about the ticking in the rear. The video was shot with my phone, its not as loud as my phone makes it out to be. Not sure why it sounds that loud. Ill let you know definitely whats going on tomorrow when its fixed.

Im just curious was your hand brake engaged while your mechanic is doing this on your rear wheel? If it is I think that is "Normal" to hear.
What is abnormal is what you have said that the clicking sound happens when you step on the accelerator pedal?

mike12002us 04-21-2013 09:46 PM

no, the handbrake was off and car out of gear.

FirstZin83 04-21-2013 09:46 PM

Good Luck, I think now that you did their troubleshooting for them. They should take it a little more seriously. The only way I can see a bearing making that much noise is if a bearing race is cracked, or one or more of the ball bearings is cracked. Either way I'd think the bearing would disintegrate in less than 10 miles under those conditions. That's why I lean a little more to it being an issue with the parking brake mechanisms inside the rotor.

Well if that is the case then that is something out of the norm.
Update us then once it got fixed.

years ago I had a new 240Z. From the day i picked it up it had a clunk in the front end when I hit bumps. I took it into the dealer twice....nothing wrong. I finally took it to my brother who is a mechanic. He walked out to the car, poked his head under the front end...stood up and as he was walking away told me to tell the desler to take the packing blocks out of the front springs!? Most of them are idiots.
