This is why i hate driving on the freeways
Two separate incidents seriously made me reconsider using the freeway on rush hour traffic...
Incident one: Couple months ago my bumper got hit by a wooden plank that was thrown into my lane. Gave me a nice dent on the grill and some light scuffs on the clear coat that was easily removed. Incident two. Same freeway today on the fast lane... Another piece of debri, possibly from a blown tire was thrown so high up that it flew pass my windshield and hit "somehing" on the driver side. I didnt know where the debri hits or how severe the damage is but you can imagine how pissed i was. So i finally got to work and immediately get out to check for damage. Luckily.. only the driver side's side mirror got hit and there are no dents or paint chips.ci thought it is gonna be something more serious than that judging from how loud it was. I need to inspect the car better to make sure nothing else got hit. I was telling myself that all the careful driving and parking to avoid chips/dings would have been wasted cause of this. And i am truly amazed how much **** we have on our freeways :shakes head: |
I fully agree with you, these freeways here in SoCal suck! There always seems to be some sort of debris on the road. The other day, I saw plastic milk crates on the 405 southbound lane, by the Howard Hughes Center. I can imagine the carnage that would cause, if cars plowed into those at full speed......

I've had a lot of problems with flying rocks... Just the other day one fell off a truck (I **** you not it was a truck full of rocks....) and hit my DD windshield and cracked it. Just one little crack. It's annoying because I'm not certain it justifies buying a new windshield. This is the second one on that windshield, get pelted with a rock every couple of years. :shakes head:

Yeah, for some reason in the car sounds louder than the damage actually is.
One time I had slowly backed into a curb and heard a loud BAM. Went to check it out and it was only minor scuff below the dummy light. Glad to hear the damage is minimal. |
Had the same thing happen to our 05 beater sentra coming back to nevada on the thruway and a eurotrash import doing some lane splitting it kicked up some truck tire debris took out the right side mirror , molding and 2 window trims.
About $600 in damage if claimed, but it fixed cheaply, it would have been a lot more in the Z. It really sucks because California has some nice roads for the Z, but with all the trash on the roads , crazy drivers and wheel thieves , that may hit you at a motel and also factor in the dogs, its better to take the beater. |

They call company to pay for the damages . |
The 91 is pretty bad when it comes to rock chips -_-
Luckly I hardly drive mine on freeway for long periods of time . On the 5 you run into most random **** on freeway . For instance once there was a couch just in middle of the freeway . |
1 year of all city driving and i got about 7 easily noticeable rock chips , I only drive 5 miles to work
If I drove on the freeway more i might of needed a repaint by now |

Last week on the 5 Fwy NB around Irvine there was a ladder laying in the middle of the freeway. Luckily I was behind a red truck when suddenly the truck swirled and my reflex was to switch lane (safely). If I was tailgating it would have been a different outcome. :shakes head: |
I feel your pain. Pennsylvania is no better. I think we have like, the third worst rated road system (by state) in the country.
My route to work requires highway driving, and it's a major truck route, because it's the ONLY highway through the county I live in. The front of my black Z looks like a damn dalmatian. I came out to my car the other morning, and didn't realize that the "pebble" that hit me the previous night had left a giant claw mark next to my one fang. My favorite was running over a truck tire though. I was following a pickup truck (which is what about 75% of people around here drive) at a safe distance, but couldn't see anything in front of him nonetheless. He just drives right over it, because he can, and BAM, truck tire. Right in in front of me at 70 mph. That was a horrible instant of "this is happening." I ran the thing over, and was SURE when I got to work my front aero lip would be torn off. Miraculously, there was like, no damage. Scary as hell though. PA never cleans their roads. They're pot holed, cracked, uneven, and covered in crap. At least in Cali you guys have like, four lane highways. Ours were all built in 1789. Ugh. :shakes head: |
As if their were not enough reason why So Cal stinks. Someone finds another.
Please note Nor Cal tone in my voice. :icon17: |

Yes! We Cali people like to complaint about the weather, the freeways, and the great deals in Parts For Sale  |
This time of year is rough in the northeast, no potholes have been filled yet from over the winter and there's lots of excess sand on the road from the snow

Since I've bought my Z this has been the main source of damages. Not long after I bought it a rock hit the windshield and it had to be replaced because the crack extended to the edge of the windshield. Best part is no one was in front of me for like a quarter mile, must have been flung from opposing traffic.
Then I hit a piece of a tire going about 70mph at night on the highway here, didnt see it until the last second and couldn't get over because of traffic, and it cracked my front lip, buckled under the car exiting the side, and also cracked the side skirt. This is why we can't have nice things. |
Our freeways physically aren't as bad as what y'all are describing, but there seem to be a ton of rocks. Even just small pebbles you can barely hear hitting your car seem to chip the **** out of the front end. About a month into ownership I had a rock get flipped up and chip my windshield, then about a half mile later, another chipped the roof.
Then there's five small chips on my hood now, but never heard anything hit it. And a huge gash on the front of the bumper - a rock went through my clear bra. The bra has other battle scars, but only one has penetrated it so far. :shakes head: x1000 |
Try living in palm springs ... I get all of the above plus 40mph sandstorm
Seriously **** the roads |

Yeah, just last week I watched a ladder fall off the truck directly in front of me here in San Diego. Those things are harder to miss when they are still moving on the ground. I did miss it, but a couple cars behind me were not so lucky. (Also, I wasn't driving my Z.)

I believe I had a way worse experience than you. My brand new 911, with only 600 miles, lost her virginity when a piece of debris shot back from the car ahead of me into the front bumper, damaging the aluminum tub that secures the front trunk compartment, but also acts as a structural piece. I'm just about to get it back from the repair shop now, where it took longer than it took to make the entire car from scratch. UGH it boils my blood just thinking about it. I'm seriously scared to go on busy freeways now.

Cars like that are meant for remote canyon roads and show rooms, definitely not for busy freeways. Its like driving through a mine field. Rock chips alone will make your heart bleed |
LMAO at the couch in the middle of the freeway. That's a hardcore spot to set your couch at to catch some views, or TV.
Driving on any freeway, you're going to get hit by some rock flying off another vehicle's rear tires. Just stay far away from the vehicle in front of you and to the side. There was a yellow school bus that was on my right (while on the freeway), and it kicked a rock at my 370Z windshield. Fortunately, it didn't put a scratch on it, but the sound was pretty loud. At high speeds, sounds and impacts are multiplied x times even if it's a small object. The Sienna mini van I drive sometimes, got a chip on the windshield from a rock, while also driving on the freeway. Imagine that hitting your head, neck or shirt if you were on a motorcycle. I also got rear ended at 60 MPH, while stopped at a light, in the mini van. Anyone here ever been in a large metal object while being hit by another large metal object at 60 MPH? It's quite loud and a bit disturbing to say the least. |

I feel your pain! I finally broke down and bought a daily driver. The relief from the stress of trashing the Z is amazing.
I'm in Houston too, and have dodge everything from a couch on I-45 to tire shards from a blow out in front of me. I got the same loud "thump" when the carcass bounced off the rear fender and roof. |

me, I feel safer driving on the freeways than parking somewhere for a long time. At least you have a chance to avoid the accident when at the wheel. When the car is parked, and a bad driver is heading toward your car, you got no chance.

For me I hate the FWYs because of the following stupid things:

All of this talk about ladders on the freeways has me watching these work trucks and avoiding being behind them and w/in 60 yards of them. :eekdance: I also hate semi's (mainly the ones hauling dirt/rock) and having to pass them. I can't not pass, because then I'd be going 45 in a 70 and they're always in the middle lane, so I have to get close either way. |
