Wrx vs 370z
 

Guy at work has a 2004 WRX that he loves. Done the reflash,bigger tires, exhaust, Bigger aftermarket turbo and few other things. We talk trash about which car is faster he says he has about 350 hp. So My Z is a AT and bone stock. Should I race or should I Accept that he faster.

Why don't you just not worry about it and enjoy your Z for what it is? A beautiful car?

I hate these posts to be honest because you're always going to find someone who thinks they are faster in "insert car" after "insert mods". I had a WRX with pretty much all the bolt ons with stock turbos and I can easily tell you a stock 370Z will smoke a bolt-on WRX. It was even night and day in speed/performance.. WRXs are sloppy and way less refined.

Just get some HFCs/Testpipes and Catback and never look back.

Edit: Saw you mentioned he had aftermarket turbo. He must be claiming 350 whp.. You can't defeat that, yet. ;)

The WRX is ridiculously easy to modify. Even if he won, its still a fairly modded car versus your stock one.

If you want to find out, hit the local strip up, pay your $20 and run 'em?

"I dont care if your car is faster or not, My car is more beautiful and mature than your car!"

Whenever someone tries to race me I usually say "grow up" or "I'm too old for this ********."

the wrx is a toy..just a econobox with a turbo for the guys that couldnt afford the sti's...the Z has heritage, looks, power, and actually has feeling in the steering..

Uhmmmm...sounds like someones a bit blinded here. Nothing personal, but the boxer 4 Scooby's have long been proven to be an extremely stout motor that is easily modifiable. "Econobox with a turbo" or not, they still handle very well and can be made very fast.

Simply claiming that the WRX is nothing more than an econobox is merely denial over the fact that they can be made as good as the STi for less.

If that kid is actually putting down 350 to all wheels, I will soundly disagree. He'll out launch him with ease and just keep pulling.

TT u're Z to 600+ hp and 400 + torque and not many ppl will talk trash to you.

Its unknown still, but after modding, who really talks about their modded crank HP? So, Im going to automatically assume he's talking wheel horsepower, and the OP didnt quite specify.

You may still yet be correct though, who knows :)

I agree with MightyBobo that AWD with 350hp will eat you up on the street. Take it to the drag strip you should launch better plus you don’t have to worry about going to jail. Racing charge is a class B misdemeanor, with up to 90 days in jail.

If you are that worried about winning races, just get a used vette. They are dirt cheap right now.

I was driving my 370 last night. And unsuspectingly, 3 350Z's swoop up next to me. The first guy revs, with his aftermarket exhaust and what not. I give him the thumbs up, he mistook that for wanting to race, he takes off and sees that I'm not playing his game. Then the other 2 350's just accelerate and pass me up.

I don't take these gestures seriously. I'm in my early 30's and I don't need to attract attention, potentially wreck my car, get caught the cops, kill myself or others, or all of the above.

Just about any Joe is going to cut a solid 60' with a nicely powered WRX. Probably in the 1.7-1.8 area. And that's barely even trying.

On the other hand, its going to take a fairly good driver to even get sub-2.0 60's in the 370Z.

I guess short story shorter, even at the strip, 350 AWHP is going to eat the 370 to shreds even if the WRX driver half-asses the launch. Guess he could hope for ridiculous turbo lag? :)

I've owned a WRX and a STI both modded of course but I would walk bolt-on HR 350's from a 55/60 roll ... not an *** whooping mind you but a steady pull. From a dig it wasn't even an contest. So unless you get some FI I would just concede to having the better looking car.

yeah...two completely different cars! I have a severly modded STi -- I embarrass corvettes and vipers at the track...its really quite humorous ;)

Challenge him to a drift contest...that may quiet him down a bit ;) Unless he is Ken Block, he may have trouble with that one!

Absolutely true, which is why I traded my WRX in for my Z. With that said,:p my WRX w/Cobb 2.5 tuning would smoke the Z off the line like all other cars. An 1/8th mile race wouldn't be close. A 1/4 mile race would probably be neck and neck. Anything beyond that distance the Z would win simply because of the bigger motor has more top end. I can't speak for those who might have a rebuilt or stroked WRX motor.

A friend of mind has a 2.5RS with a ej20 and slightly higher boosted turbo, and he lost from a roll on at 60 to an s2K ap1 which just had bolton mods

The owner may not know the difference between BHP and RWHP....

he might think he has 350HP and that it's all the same, claiming that his stock HP was what he had "at the wheels, fo sheezy"

Btw Not worried about anything, we're just 2 old guys swapping bench racing trash and having fun. All in good fun.

AWD will launch better than a Z any day of the week

fortunate for the z guys...if the wrx owner doesn't launch properly...he can do some serious damage to his car. AWD cars don't like launching too much even though their good at it! And unless he has the STi 6 sp tranny swap, the 5 sp doesn't last long at all!

Honestly - you should be able to destroy him on a real track ... just make sure its a technical one and you are a good driver who knows the limits of your car... once the scooby gets a bunch of suspension done with the power it puts down - you can kiss your race good bye... honestly - if you want to be able to hold your own against stock turbo cars your only real option is a TT or SC kit...

Why dont you ask him what his quarter mile times are and what he traps? if he does not know... chances are he has no idea how much power he is actually putting down... a lot of people like to talk...

Let's us keep it civil I'm holding my real thoughts but :wtf2: we don't need to go there, are you a owner? this has to be a apples to apples comparison stock for stock with equal cars, mods to keep up are not the same because it turns into a pissing match so whats the point.

im sorry if i offended any previous owners here..but the Z is just way out of the WRX's league in terms of engineering...im on iwsti.com btw..a common complaint is lack of steering feel, body roll and a fairly fragile 5spd...now all you guys are putting up modded wrx's smokin 370z's..thats great and all but again you guys have to be modded and tuned to keep up with a stock car...suspension upgrades, tranny upgrades, tunes, barely legal downpipes and exhausts..etcetc...btw its safe to say that the 370z is near the top of its tier when it comes to performance in its price range..the wrx on the other hand has competitors like the MS3 and the Cobalt SS...

to the fellow that said the Z was an econocar...it isnt...its always been a sports car..ever since its birth...the wrx...not as much..so chill

I ran a stock wrx sti in my 07 350z hr from a roll 40 mph. After about 80 mph I starting walking him. Ended up 2.5 cars by 100 plus. There tough from a dig. fyi

Hmm you dont know what size turbos etc. He could just be baiting you with the 350hp remark so you would think "oh we are close in hp" etc. I will bet he will beat you pretty good especially from a dig. If it were me Id do it just for fun. My ego aint ever been wrapped up in my car. Have a friendly race and post the results.

In CA if you get caught street racing whry just take your car...for good!!!

That car will probably smoke you, to be honest just enjoy your car.

I'm going to head back over to that "age of 370" owners thread and make sure I'm still in the right place. :shakes head:
