Last few fuel dots?!?

I remember reading this before but when I get to 3 dots remaining they seem to disappear And the range goes from like 40 to 20 to--- within like 5 miles.. Feels like I'm getting gypped

homeryansta 02-18-2013 06:04 PM

I also feel like the dots are not linear in relation to the gas tank. It takes like 100 miles to get rid of the first dot then the rest are just there to look pretty because they drop pretty quickly.

JARblue 02-18-2013 06:32 PM

The dots are determined by a floating sensor in the gas tank. If you look at the shape of the gas tank, it is quite obvious why the dots disappear in the manner they do :ugh2:

I regularly take mine down to a single dot with -- Mileage Remaining reading on the display. I pay attention to my driving habits and my mileage per tank to know exactly how much gas I have left.

Read T 02-18-2013 07:42 PM

On other nissan's I have I refer to the fuel gauge as an empty gauge. Reads full for like 150 miles then drops down quickly. Same with the 370z

OldGuy 02-18-2013 07:48 PM

Just play it safe and fill up when you fall below half. One less thing to worry about with this car.

CDepp 02-18-2013 08:30 PM

Number 8

tWeEzY 02-18-2013 08:50 PM

On my most recent cross country trip, i let it drop down to the last dot twice and each time i filled up it was over 18 gallons if this helps. I averaged 75mph the whole trip.

TerribleONE 02-18-2013 09:27 PM

I think we only have a 19 gallon tank..

I wanted to get 400 miles on the tank. I braved it to 405 miles on that single tank (lots of highway miles) before stopping at the HEB near the house on my way home  My commute is about 7 miles one way, so I was just shy on my drive in that morning.

DEpointfive0 02-18-2013 10:12 PM

... SOB... Car read 3 dots, 43 miles left, took a dump...
No right hand turns either, lol
Lets see if it's the gas gauge's shíttiness or my fuel pump

axmea? 02-18-2013 10:27 PM

Just fill up the darn tank! You bought a sports car and it's thirsty all the time.

... So, I got it to turn on... Shat myself about 40 times because I thought I was gonna get nailed... Filled it up. Took 14.9 gallons...

SPOHN 02-19-2013 07:08 AM

Can't quite understand why you guys let your fuel get so low. The fuel also assist the fuel pump in keeping it cool and does not strain itself.

:iagree:

We live our lives one 1/4 tank at a time, buddy!

Borrowed a 370Z last weekend and the same thing happened to me, said I had 50 miles left with 3 dots, then shat itself in the middle of the road, was no fun.

I drive a lot and I like to fill up near my office (new gas station) or near my house (cheap prices). How much quicker do you really think my fuel pump is going to fail? As, long as there's gas in the tank, it seems like the fuel pump would have gas to keep it cool. Is there really a point at which there isn't enough gas to cool the fuel pump but there is enough to run the engine?

I haven't noticed any posts about burnt up fuels pumps due to low fuel (for DDs), but I haven't read everything.

From what little I've read about modern fuel pumps, as long as you're pumping liquid, you're OK. When it gets to the point where you are not pumping, the car shuts down anyway. ;)

Unless you habitually run out of fuel, it shouldn't be a problem. But I'm no expert. YMMV.

SPOHN 02-19-2013 09:19 AM

Not a Hugh deal. Personal preference. I wouldn't run my oil low either.

Wiggins3377 02-19-2013 09:21 AM

Side note, but since I purchased used I don't know the answer. Anyone know what the sticker stated annual fuel costs would be?

I haven't either (on both accounts)

That's what I was thinking, glad to hear someone else say it. I'll do a little more research on my own when I have some time. Only run out of gas one time over 10 years ago, and that's all it took... and, of course, it wasn't in the Z.

:tiphat: I would be more concerned about the oil than gas. If I ever ran out of gas, it would simply be an inconvenience to me. Running low on oil can potentially damage the engine. Obviously there are different reasons for different concerns in daily vs track :driving:

Osiris 02-19-2013 09:44 AM

Instead of dots, call them balls. Then try to explain to your significant other why you need to stop for gas. "Uh, I have 3 balls"

Yeah, it was THE weirdest thing, I was going up a hill, going 45-50, then I noticed power cut for half a second, looked down, RPMs were fine, so I thought somehow I hit limp mode... But the oil was at 180, so I started to pull over, (cut people off to make that immediate right turn) and it didn't make it  I tried to roll down out of the way every time traffic died for 10 seconds.
God that scared the shít out of me because I put the hazards on but people are known for FLYING up that hill, and I just clenched and hit the brake over and over praying they'd know I was broken down

I was driving around all day and on the way to the gas station, and yep, it cools and lubricates the fuel pump because the fuel pump is in the tank
But I think I am having fuel pump, or injector or spark plug problems anyways (you can check my other thread) we'll see what the dealershit says tomorrow

JungleZ 02-19-2013 11:09 AM

Wow guys I had 2 dots suddenly reappear this morning and all of a sudden my range went from ---- to 28 miles. This car is a trip! And I can afford gas I just like to see what I can get out of a full tank , I'm getting 200 miles out of a full tank... Like barely even 13mpg. Of course all city driving but day ummm I didn't expect this.

You must be having fun :driving:

I generally get around 19 mpg in the city which gives me over 350 miles per tank.

DEpointfive0 02-19-2013 11:18 AM

Straight city I get 15~MPG, you guys must drive like geezers

I call it city driving because I generally avoid the highways, but there's a fair amount of highway driving involved in my daily route (or at the very least 60 mph frontage road driving).

I drive like an animal and I know my work parking structure driving up to 4th floor with big old speed bumps doesn't help the cause.

I have a friend who got his wife 11MPG vanity plates for her Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 :bowrofl:

JungleZ 02-19-2013 11:24 AM

O I forgot to add when i do get on the freeway the 5 times I've actually been in 6th gear I get like 26-28mpg that's a crazy difference from city driving.

Yeah, on the freeway it isn't bad, I get better economy than my Maxima, and on my drive from TX to CA I got... 27.4MPG? Maybe a touch past? 500 miles between some of my fill ups

UNKNOWN_370 02-19-2013 12:02 PM

I get 16 mpg's... I fill up at 5 dots so.... no issue here.

I get about the same 19 MPG in the city. You must like to have fun traffic light to traffic light.
