Cheap Insurance may be no insurance
In the early 80's I bought the cheapest insurance I could find as I had no money and we have the highest insurance rates in the nation. Champion Insurance. Turns out the company was bankrupt and the insurance commissioner was covering that up. The insurance commissioner went to prison (what would the federal prison suppliers do without Louisiana politicians?) and many millions of claims were left unpaid. Guess who was personally liable for those claims? I was fortunate and had no accidents while I was covered by them but stopped shopping for low dollar insurance.
Insurance is just a contract and a contract is just a promise. Only as sound as the organization behind it. Been with Allstate over 30 years now and insurance on the Z was not disproportionately high compared to my Crown Vic that I was driving before--but still higher than if I lived some place where tort lawyers don't own the courthouse. I have had a couple of accidents and Allstate kept me out of the courthouse which is what I pay them for. |
My wife and I use travelers now, every one else seemed pretty expensive compared to what we are paying now. We have a 2009 Z and a 2007 Audi A4 2.0T, we have full coverage on both of them plus $10,000 custom parts protection on the Z, and we pay about $650 every six months. Other companies were anywhere from $750 to over $1000 for 6 months. Actually one thing that was cool was that when I called them to add the custom parts coverage it didn't raise my rate at all. My wife just totaled her Civic a few months ago and it didn't affect our rates either, so I've been pretty happy with them so far.
I will say this about Allstate, when I was younger I had them covering my '91 ford explorer. There was a local office that i would go to and pay my bill every month, so I got to now the people there, and they also knew my parents since they used them as well. Someone broke into my truck one night and stole my system, worth MAYBE $500-$600. When I called the local Allstate they agreed to replace it for me, and they found out that the speakers and amp I had were discontinued. They ended up getting me top of the line Rockford Fosgate equipment worth about $2000. It was so loud that I had to go back to them a few months later to have my rear windshield replaced after I cracked it with the bass  Forgot to mention I'm 30, the wife is 29, we both have clean records for at least 10 years. Sent from my iPizzle using magic and new fangled science stuff |

Oh and since I guess you didn't look, Allstate has a 78% disapproval rating on the site you posted a link to. How much extra are you paying for the 2% extra approval? |
Quote:
Since the pages are headed "Consumer Complaints & Reviews", I'm a bit surprised that the disapproval ratings for both companies aren't closer to 100%. ;) From what I have heard from friends and acquaintances that use Allstate, it is a good company. It has it's problems, like every other insurer has, but most of what I hear is good. If I ever need to leave State Farm, Allstate is one of the first I will check out. |
Most insurance companies are easy to deal with on simple small one time claims, the issues come in when there are major losses or injuries envoled.
Or when things are questionable, this is the time when you need to bring in an attorney. A friend I know had his out board motor stolen off a fishing boat in only 5 minutes while at a fast food joint and the insurance company denied the claim as it sounded fishy to them, but it was a valid claim. My friend didn't bother using an attorney and just wrote it off. But it taken to court they would have to pay up. You will find this tactic used during muliple fault auto claims and during a lot of home damage claims, to deny them or stone wall the client. |

working with Geico on adjustments was 100% of the motivating factor behind going someplace else for my personal insurance. They're likely the cheapest option (for my Mustang, I pay just over $75/mo for 300k/300k/100k limits and a $1MM umbrella), but the way they handle repairs is laughable. |
All corporations are evil and heartless -- entities aimed purely at profit.
Insurance is a complete fucking racket. Call around, and just get the cheapest and most reputable you can afford. |
Insurance as racket
I don't agree that all corporations are evil. They are all impersonal and by definition heartless as, irregardless of how they are considered under law, they are not people and exist only to make money. More a matter of being amoral than immoral IMHO.
In any case, tort law is also a racket, and it sometimes takes one to fight one. That and the simple fact that, being human, every time you get behind the wheel you are taking a certain risk that you will kill or maim other people going about minding their own business. I once went with the cheapest option and got away with it but many people who had an accident during that time are 20 years along still having their wages garnished or otherwise impacted paying damages that they had a paid a bankrupt insurance company to cover. Having an insurance card is not always the same thing as being insured. Ask the billing clerk at any hospital or doctors office. |

I'm insured with USAA, but I think consumer guru Clark Howard has always talked well of Amica. |
I have been with state farm for ever. I received new info with my insurance card last week. State farm now spells out that if you go to the track for fast driving, not just racing they will not cover any damage. (A Given).
It also stated that if you have any modifications on your car beyond what your car comes stock with State farm will not cover any of the non-stock parts if damged or stolen. Also they will use new, used or rebuilt parts and non-OEM parts to fix your car.(I think this may be state by state as I think Cali states they have to use new OEM parts if requested). I bring this up because this is the first time I have seen them come out with a statement like this. |

I wouldn't use State Farm or Allstate ever again. My wife and me have perfect records and they tried to raise our rate by 30% for no reason. No claims nothing.... We had all the best insurance with them both. Requoted through other agents ... Still same high price. I went to Mercury except for Motorhome which was cheaper with Progressive.
Insurance make their own rules and if you haven't been in a accident in a while they figure your going to wreck soon so they bump you off. Weird. No loyality at all. In total, I have over 15 policies with Mercury and Progressive and only pay $3300 per year in insurance. That includes cars, houses, boats, MH, life and earthquake etc... Never again will I give one red cent to Allstate or State Farm. You should have seen the hoops that Allstate sent us through before we had enough and took our policies away. Can you imagine tracking your mileage every six months and reporting it on 8-10 vehicles? Nighmare.... Oh and the policies were supposed to have unlimitted mileage clause. They must have thought I was renting my cars out or something. Idiots. Newest addition -2013 Chevy Volt ... 273ft lbs of torque from 0 rpm. Not too bad folks.... Maybe ELR in my future? |

Currently have my Nismo, 2002 malibu, and a 1995 pathfinder, and renters insurance for like 700-800 ( I don't know exactly) bucks yearly with full coverage. |
So on my laptop I put in www.usaa.com and General Insurance | General Auto Insurance | Car Insurance Quotes loads. What could be causing that? Some spyware?

Clear your cookies and cache, see if it clears up. Or you could resolve the query in cmd and type in the ip address of USAA.

Companies that treat employees badly
Will treat customers badly. One of the few things this hard head has learned in 50 plus years is to not do business with people who mistreat their employees or their family.
|
Insurance is a game for a lot of companies. Reputable or otherwise (the General's ain't great) its all about how much they have been paying out lately vs profits. They will happily take your money for years but if they are faced with big payouts to cover disasters that WILL have a direct impact on your claim if it happens at a bad time for your company. Regardless of how good a customer you are or have been, they will try every method they can to get out of your claim. That being said, going with a reputable company and paying a touch more may be worth it in the long run. The trick is, from one year to the next, a company like StateFarm can go from reputable to its current ****hole status.
I fully support those who have stated StateFarm is crap. I WAS a StateFarm customer (cars/home/life/rec-toys) for 25+ years with a great record. When I made a claim in 2012, and not a big one, regarding a home accident (pet vs brand NEW 70'' 3D TV :icon14: )they denied it on a technicality. I pulled all my insurance from them shortly thereafter. Amazing how a 25+ year whole life policy, when pulled, cost them nearly 10 times the value of my claim. When you shop, don't just shop prices, shop reputation and keep an eye on both over time. Being a long time loyal customer matters little now to many companies but there are some good ones out there. Good Luck |
A 2007 investigation by CNN reported that major car insurance companies, including State Farm and Allstate Insurance, are increasingly fighting claims from those injured by their insured members. In some cases, the settlement proposed amounts to just $50 or the threat that any lawsuit would be made so expensive and time-consuming that it would not be worth the victim's time. State Farm and Allstate have denied these allegations.[14] This followed on the heels of criminal investigations by the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, which found that State Farm had wrongly denied claims stemming from Hurricane Katrina.[15] Richard F "Dickie" Scruggs pleaded guilty in March for his role in trying to pay Judge Henry Lackey of Mississippi a $50,000 bribe for a favorable ruling in a dispute involving a $26.5 million settlement after Hurricane Katrina.[16]
