car wont start ipd steering lock

I drive an 09 nissan 370z automatic, after work i tried to start the car to go home but it wont start. I checked everything and it was fine; batteries, fuse, gas. I had it towed to the dealership and they said they need to replace the ipd steering lock unit and it totals to be $1,663. I am broke right now is there any other alternatives? anyone can help me please? thanks

are they trying to rip me off? is the price too high?

and the key light is on all the time even though it wont start. I looked in the owners manual and the key light means steering wheel lock or electronic key problems

i recall seeing that the steering lock costs $500 . and im sure it wouldnt take them long enough to change it that they would charge that rediculous amount to replace it so . there is a diy on here on how to replace it .

Try what this member did:

THEN pull the fuse

Same thing happened to me last year and I towed my car to the dealership, they first told me the problem is the battery need to change and after they changed it, the car still did not start. And they finally found it is the problem of steering lock. I paid 1100 for both replacement on battery and steering lock.

Zentropy posted this on facebook:
Rubber mallet, no clutch, repeatedly hit steering lock and push start button till it releases.

You can also try to:
Unlatch the little lever that makes the steering wheel move up and down and then shake the **** out of the wheel up and down.

can you give me the link to the diy please?

It is, but since the OP has a 2009 I'm going to assume he's out of the 36k miles or over the 3 years...

They recalled the part on the GTR, and I guess they were too lazy and cheap to do it on the 370Z because there are sooooo many more sold

maciaqua 11-13-2012 10:28 AM

its not covered by warranty. they say under 3600 miles or 3 years but im way over it

maciaqua 11-13-2012 10:30 AM

so just pull the fuse out and then put it back in? they said they need to replace it

There isn't a "real DIY" I don't think, I just know 2 people personally who have had steering lock failure (Zentropy and one other member) and I'd message them honestly, but those are the instructions both gave.

Try searching the forum for a better answer, sorry I could only help this much...

They're ripping your head off. I did the DIY fuse pull that I saw on here before mine went bad and its not hard to do. It didn't effect anything except the steering lock no longer works. Big deal. Problem is, if your steering lock has already failed, it's stuck in the lock position so the fuse pull fix won't work. It has to be in the open position. I've read several posts that state you may be able to gently tap the lock while pushing the on button and it will release. At least once. If it does, that's the time to pull the fuse. You may not get another shot at it. Do a search on it and you'll see. Good luck with it.

Some people have had luck by tapping on the ipd steering lock box with a mallet via screwdiver etc while trying to start the car. It may lossen the screw drive mechanism enough to power up. Once it is in the "on" mode (not running), PULL THE FUSE! problem gone forever.
