It is illegal and can be done just like anything else by someone with the ability to solder electronic components and access to ready made ecu chips for your year/make of car or schematics for the chip.

Not worth the investment or the trouble if you ask me.

Over here (UK), some cars are delivered to the dealer in D mode. in D mode the odo can be reset to zero, and it automatically resets after 200 miles.
The idea is the dealer does this as they deliver the car to you.

My wife's Alfa was mistakenly left in this mode when delivered to her...

Perhaps that is what the OP is referring to?

No, his car I believe is here in the US and he is having it modified so it is being moved around prior to him taking it to Peru.
In Peru there looks to be a new law that if a car has over X miles on it they classify it as used and alter the tax rate. So the OP is trying to return it 0 or below the miles that pushes him over.

Ahh.. i get it.. when he said "above that" I assumed he meant "just above that", not 10k above that ;)

I am guessing here but a bit certain that this forum does not condone this practice. OP - not a good idea.

I spoke with the enitity called Ministry of Transport and Communications and they said that there is a new law published on the official peruavian news paper and i spoke with some people that work for the port and do imports. The law exist and it is stupid.

They said that this law is made to prevent a flood of used cars because what some people did was to buy a wrecked car and declared as same, but the damage was nothing because i think the insure for you guys is too much.

So this people fixed that lil damage and sold it here as new. The law before was 80,000KM (50k miles) and 5 years old max but now is 100kM (62.5 miles) and the years remain the same.

I did search on the web but nothing even i called SUNAT and they said there is no problem 50k miles car can enter. They are worse than nissan customer service as i read in the forum lol
