I own a home, well new to the home game, got mine in August, 2008. good time to buy.
but i would gladly go back to my parents house, free food, roof, etc...get away from the wife... oh sweet Jesus it would be like a vacation. |
I own a home, bought it in 08, my mortgage, tax and insurance is slightly more than renting here, but once you include the tax deductions its pretty much even. I'm trying to save up for a second home. Hopefully the market stays flat for a while. (most likely it will).
|
Just bought my second house, renting out the first. Probably will pick one up each time I move (every 3-4 years or so) if all goes well, and then roll those properties into the house my wife and I will retire in. Perhaps a little townhome or something at our favorite ski resort too.
Concerning the whole living with the folks vs living on your own thing: everyone's situation is different, and I would never presume to know what is right for anyone else based on posts here. What I do know is this: I've been living away from my parents since I was married at 20. I'm now 29. Has it been difficult at times? Hell yes. Would I have wanted to stay with my parents instead? Not in a million years. Why? It's not because my parents were hard to get along with, quite the opposite, they were awesome and did much to set me up for success during my formative years. Nope, it's because I relish being independent, an adult in the truest sense of the word, and would have seen it as a defeat if I had stayed home with the parents even before I was married. My wife and I could have stayed on, even as we were both going to college, until 'we got on our feet'. But it wouldn't have been the same. I felt I had taken enough from them as it was and it was time to make my own way in the world. The Z is on hold for the moment, but my S4 keeps things interesting enough for the time being. ;) S. |
^same here Z is on hold. s2k still makes me smile.

Hell.. I'm 17, still in high school and taking college classes. I wont be embarrassed when I'm living with my parents at 21, because it's that much simpler for me to attend University of Arkansas from home, than it is to go and have my own rent to worry about.
|
I think living with parents is also a cultural thing, typically in an asian (for me filipino) family it is accepted often encouraged for the kids to live with parents while they save to buy their own place. My parents did this when they were younger, of course they just came from the Philippines with practically nothing, so they had to start somewhere. Also as the parents get older (really old), the tables turn and the parents end up living with their children. It may be economical in a way, but its also very accepted in the Filipino culture.
BTW. I didn't follow the norm.. I moved out when i started college, found a job here and have been living on my own with the wife ever since. |

I've been a homeowner since I was 19 ( 8 years ago) Me and my boyfriend bought a cheap azz $60k house and remodeled it head to toe. My house looks awesome now and my car payment is higher than my mortgage :) haha

New owner/builder here! And expecting a first time home buyer $8000 refundable tax credit!!!!
|
When i was 21, i realized how much it sucked living with the parents and i would continue to do so if i kept spending money on cars.... So, i decided to downgrade to a beater car, i had a house built, worked my *** off, paid off my house before i turned 26. A week after i paid off my mortgage, i bought my 370z as a reward to myself! Its definitley worthwhile to own a house before a car... That way you have the freedom to park and work on your car in your OWN garage.
|
Own the house outright, and my 2009 z is almost paid for
|
I have a nice size home and a large second house in the mountains as I love too board. Looking at a 3rd this weekend but it will be the size of a closet by the ocean (a tiny closet, so small that the sink doubles as the shower)
As far as living with your parents. Good for you guys, nothing wrong with that, I had to move on my own at 16 with nothing but a foot in the rear out the door. I would of done anything to be able to stay at home or should I say have a home to stay in. My kids can live in our home forever if they like (I'll be out Sailing the world anyway at that point :tiphat:) |
Well I won't have the Z until May or June, but I closed on my house last September!
|
And that is most important! You're home is the most important investment you will ever make. Its value may go up and down but in the long run you'll always prosper. Car's as much as I love them are never good for the savings account (but they sure make me happy)

No regrets my friend. Everything happens for a reason and every closed door opens another.
Thanks though :) PS. I'm not that nice, I just play a nice guy on TV HAHAAHA |
LOL awesome, i'm glad your all good because if i had to go when i was 16 i would have just cried alot...hahaa
Now where is that video walkaround of your bad-*** car, its saturday here already!! :yum: - Ty |
I dropped it back off at RAW today. They are trying to knock it out tomorrow afternoon. Fixing that bump on the nose where the fill bubbled for some reason and polishing the tinted taillights. Should be done pretty quick and then I'll get that video, promise!

PS Tyrell, not to threadjack but we have a bit in common. I was born in Melbourne, AUS. Went back a few times since. Real father lived in Esperance which is South of Perth, went to visit him too (A-hole). He now lives in NZ.
My really good mate (goes by Red) Runs the Suzuki race team in NZ and the back of team for Australia. Guy supported my bike shop back in the day. Great country, may take the family out there in the next year or two to visit, pretty special place. Have some Fish and Chips for me, maybe even a meat pie with Sauce inside...miss that junk food :) |
We bought our first house six years ago this month. Moving from apt to apt got old. We have a small place (1500 sq. ft.) but it's all we need. Except for the garage that is. A one car garage is not enough. Somehow I have the car, motorcycle, tool bench, freezer, heavy bag and a bunch of other stuff in there. No room to work on the car in there so that happens outside. I would love a bigger garage. Next house will be similar in size but with a three car garage, no make that four car garage:rofl2:

Hmmmm.. I like the States.. politics and taxes are lacking and they sure try to take the wealthier people down unlike AUS where they embrace it. Moves much faster and Americans thrive on stress where Aussie's seem to embrace a little more personal time and relaxation. I don't sleep much, very high energy and don't know what to do without stress so I'm a little out of place in Aussie land.
I'm here, so that says something but I miss dim sims, sausage rolls and meat pies. I also miss the small gestures that are made such as G'day, Cheers, that sort of thing. They seem 2nd nature when your there but here its a little more cold. People say Hi, how are you? but I'm quite sure its an empty request... in fact I often wonder why they ask. Its a good place mate, I've been here so long you'd never know I was born abroad. Coolest thing about the States, its a ton of different nationalities living together, most embrace it. If you ever come out this way make sure you let me know, would be cool to show you around! (the good parts anyway) |

Yeah, we're kind of screwed in CA that way. Just opened a building in NC, guy I sent out there to run it said he can live close to the ocean for cheap. Cold as heck but he's liking it thus far (only been a month)
|
I'm 18 and still in HS; I own no 370Z. I don't think I can ever live with my parents again (I'm at boarding school now). I wouldn't want to put that on them. I'll live on college dorm for a year, then I'll use the money I save up the first year through working to rent and apt. or "dorm suite." I've had enough dorm life already. After college, I will definitely rent. I just don't think that I could move back in with my parents; they would be very disappointed...

Hmmm, perhaps. I've been eyeballing two cars lately, a CLK Black series with low miles and quite cheap and a 997TT. I'm not doing anything until after summer but I'm keeping my Nismo. Never really modded a car like this other then my 67 camaro, its a very special car for me.
Enough about me, back to houses. Who want to buy mine? I'll sell you a large cabin in Big Bear, heck, I may even carry the loan :) |
July 26th - absolutely zero debt
July 27th - closed on my first house July 29th - bought my Z It was kind of a shock to realize I'd just spent a quarter mil in the span of a couple days. |
Yeah, it only gets easier after that (to be more and more in debt that is).
I found a Skyline I really like, I also found a Porsche I really like, there's a really cool supra I have to have! F it! Come on kids, pack your things...we're going to live in a tent for a while but we'll have REALLY cool cars! Wonder if the wife will go for it? |
Hey, eating beans out of can tastes a whole lot better sitting in a Porsche!

I am 21 years old, and bought my house a year ago.... Bought the Z after the government gave me 8 grand for buying a house!! I don't see how anyone could buy a nice car, and lack in the home department.... Gotta have your priorities..... Sure, I COULD HAVE bought a sports car when I was older (you know, when you are too old to drive it, and it is a pain to get in and out of), but you only live once, and my job has helped me to see that it doesn't matter what age you are, if you gonna die, you gonna die, might as well have some fun!! A good thread!!
