Satellite Radio

I've actually been meaning to find some information on this.

So as you know, I drive a 09 Touring model, and I'm not much to listen to the music while I drive; rather with windows open and listening to the roar of the V6, but enough of that engine sound beauty nonsense, I finally sat down in the car and recognized the "sat" button. So I hit it and bam, what do you know? I get XM radio.

I just wanted to get more information on it, like how long the satellite radio will last (since I know XM or Sirius are subscription based), how much it costs (or whatever), and whether or not it really matters. I listen to my own music, so I have CDs in the car and I'll probably get an AUX IN cable to listen to my MP3 player.

It depends on where you purchased the car. I believe I get 3 months worth of Sat radio until I need to pay for it. I'm going to call them up when that free trial period runs out to cancel, then when they offer me 1/2 off, I'll probably subscribe. ;-)

3 month trial.

You should get a letter from XM shortly regarding the trial sub.

Cost... I think XM + Best of Sirius costs something like $17/month. Cheaper if you buy a longer term sub.

370Z Purist 06-25-2009 06:03 PM

Hmm. Sounds good, thanks for the information.

Now I just have to wait until I get that letter.

The Weapon 06-25-2009 06:49 PM

I received 3 months free. My trial is about to end in a few weeks and a rep called me and offered to extend the trial for another 3 months for $21.00

I said sure why not. Hopefully they keep doing that.

That's $7/month. A little birdy told me if you call them to cancel right before the trial is over, that you can get it permanently for $5/month.

Don't quote me on that as I haven't tried, but I'm going to try! ;-)

Nikon FM 06-25-2009 09:09 PM

The "full" package including traffic updates is 12.99 per month. Thats after waiting on the line for 30 minutes to renew.........(speaker though so I could cruise the forum).

Guess I'll be on hold too in a month or so. ;-) On a side note, I sure do miss the good ole days of Nikon FM's, F3's etc! ;-)

I grew into photography using a Nikon FM. It's hard to surpass simplistic perfection.

Pushing_Tin 06-25-2009 11:58 PM

I too negotiated with them and ended up paying around $70 a year, which is fair IMO.

SoCal 370Z 06-26-2009 12:03 AM

Yes, but won't they now be adding the new monthly royalty fee?

I think you can go around it depending on how you pay your subscription.

baboola 06-26-2009 02:04 AM

i got 5mo for $20 when they called me to re-subscribe 2 mo after i canceled my subscription, so you can def get it for a very good price. (note that they do charge [re]activation fee if your radio has been inactive for some time, so it worked out to around $30/5mo)

Additionally, when I called to cancel the subscription at the end of 5mo a few days ago, they were again willing to offer another 2mo for free to keep my subscription. XM is pretty sweet if you have time and energy to deal with them over the phone to get a fair price. just thought i'd share this with everyone so you can get as good a deal as I got, or maybe even better!

Is XM really just a pushover like what the people are doing? I mean, look at what people are doing...

Regardless, I still won't use XM... it will just be a button on my stereo I won't use... only the CD button has any fingerprints on it right now, hahah

FricFrac 06-26-2009 02:43 AM

I've got my MP3 player running through the Aux... haven't bothered to activate the XM. I guess if its free I should activate it just to try it out...

Roo 06-26-2009 03:21 AM

When XM first came out in 2000 I bought the lifetime membership for $199. I have got my monies worth.

Robert_Nash 06-26-2009 03:54 AM

I've had XM in all my vehicles since about 2001. I specifically chose XM over Sirius because I liked XM better and they had excellent customer service.

In my always humble opinion, XM has gone down hill ever since the "merger"....fees have continually gone up (despite the promise by Sirius to the FCC that they wouldn't) and customer service is truly horrible.

I like a lot of their music line-up (except for the loud-mouth DJs the Sirius felt the need to add) and much of their talk line up as well and it's nice to be able to listen to what you want when traeling without shifting through channels every 30 miles...the Nav-traffic is a nice feature too but I'm not sure it's worth the price.

For now, I'll keep using them but I suspect that "satelite radio" is on it's way "out"; especially "Sirius' brand of radio.

texmedic 06-26-2009 04:05 AM

I like the XM. I had it in my E46 before the Z so for about 4 years now. I like the comedy and my guilty pleasure is coast to coast am on xm 165 cause I like hearing kooky folks talkin about being abducted by space aliens!

texmedic 06-26-2009 04:12 AM

Also why are you guys up this time of morning, especially you Robert_Nash. Man I wish I was listening to xm in the parking lot of Bojangles right now! UMMM buttery goodness!

370Z Purist 06-26-2009 01:22 PM

It's fun to stay up late!
The times that are given on this forum are -5 GMT... so consider their time zone too.

kannibul 06-26-2009 01:45 PM

I've not even tried it.

Since my other vehicle doesn't have it, I've not bothered. In fact, this is my first vehicle that has had a CD player, let along a 6-disk changer in it, that supports WMA/MP3. Since I have all the music I'd want, I just burn disks. I wish it'd read the info off the WMA file though - lol...

Wife's civic has a CD player w/o WMA/MP3 support.

It would be nice if the satellite radio stations would grow up out of their adolescent habits and nix the endless use of the "F" word and the constant explicit sexual references. I don't even listen to the SAT because its nothing but endless swearing and porn.

This isn't how the majority of America talks every moment of the day. Maybe your dumb Okeys from Mystokey do but not the majority of the American people...

Sirius and XM  :(

Me liek dey tekno moozik. Tekno moozik da bomb.
It's hard to find good comedians in general, and well, pop music is abhorrent to my ears. I'm usually finding good music in good alternative.
I agree, I can't even understand how people listen to this crap about how a black dude thinks this black girl is sexy. Just say "hey you're sexy" instead of "DAMN GIRL LOOK AT DEM HUGE@$$ HIPS" or some other crap nonsense.

I agree that you can hear the "F" word and explicit sexual references on satellite radio. Saying that satellite radio is only that is, at best, an uninformed statement. Channels that broadcast sports and political talk radio, national and international news, NPR, classical music, rock, blues, opera and country western are all available alternatives to the things to which you object.

Oh BTW, if you're planning to insult a whole group of people, at least have the good grace to try to spell the words correctly - it's "Okie from Muskogee".

TheWeatherman 06-29-2009 06:36 PM

Huge Opie and Anthony fan here. I also like Ron and Fez on 202. I think it's the only reason I subscribe! I actually don't have XM in my car, but have found a way around it.... I pull up XM Online on my phone, hook it into the AUX port, and listen away! It doesn't have very good quality over the phone's internet connection, but it's just talk radio.

Which is the begining of the end of Satellite radio.... soon we'll have the internet in our cars (if you don't already) and we'll just be streaming off the net via Shoutcast or whatever...

I love my sirius and now that they bough out xm it got even better. Either way it is great for the money.

It will be the end of Satellite radio and the beginning of wide band internet. Then the ISP's will grab that money. Whatever route technology takes, we pay for it regardless. So there's not much substance in saying that satellite radio is ending when we're still using CD's anyway...

Whatever...I stand by what I say about the "F" word on SAT radio...I don't care if it is just a minor number of channels that does it...bottom line is that it isn't necessary to be broadcasting filth over the airwaves every other word...and if it is necessary for anyone then that person must not have much going in life...:shakes head:

370Z Purist 06-30-2009 12:46 AM

Language is language, you can't do anything about it. Just deal and listen to other stuff. I don't swear much myself but I don't mind an occasional shout or hearing it ... as long as it seriously isn't every other word.

Clarify what is BS?

ZCarGo 06-30-2009 06:49 AM

I've been a loyal subscriber to XM for nearly 5 years now.

First, let me say I never thought I'd pay for radio. I didn't have cable until I moved into a house with zero TV reception in 2001.

I started my subscription with an add-on radio when I was still in CA. Very long commutes and radio blew with constant commercials. This was well before I had an AUX input on my radio so I was stuck shuffling CDs..I hate CDs, they are a real PITA.

Since I began, the price has gone up to whatever it is today. I don't really care what the cost is, it's paid for itself 100X over in my sanity. I have a 100mile round trip commute and couldn't imagine terrestrial radio with the constant barrage of commercials.

Between XM and my MP3 player (3000+ tracks), I've got all the entertainment I need. The only time I've ever listened to FM in the past 4+ years is when I'm in a car wash and I can't get a signal. CDs? What are those? I couldn't tell if my CD changers have worked in the past 5 cars because I've never used them.

I am a firm believer of the First Amendment. Having this freedom doesn't require a listener to tune in..there's always the "next station" button and you do have the parental controls ability you can set up to protect the little ones

Now for the bad stuff:
  • The customer service really blows.
  • They can't get their billing straight to save their life.
  • You will wait on hold for hours to talk to some Indian dude who you can't understand.
  • I can't stand all of the channels I don't use and have to pay for (kind of like cable).

..and one last note..I wouldn't waist your time with the traffic service. Perhaps in cities with a good alternate infrastructure it would be worth something. I use my Google Maps on my phone to get my traffic...it's free.

Humm... What channels are you listening to? I mostly tune in the Alternative or classic rock stations and rarely hear this stuff? On the other hand, it's a pay service like cable and this stuff is said from time to time. I hear it mostly in some of the songs that are played, but that's the same as if I had the mp3 or a CD, so I'm not sure what stations you listen too (perhaps switch off the porn channel and listen to a music channel). ;-)

Regardless, if you don't like the language change the channel. I'm so sick of folks who bitch about language.

The "language is language" part. And having "to just deal" with it. All we have done for the last 50 years is just "deal with it" and we have let this country which once stood not only as a beacon of t freedom...but freedom grounded in a good sense of wholesome morals and values.

And now look at it.....a country full of:
  • drugs
  • sex
  • white-collar thievery
  • courts that don't have a clue as to what is fair, equitable or just
  • a government that continuously lies to its people
  • a country that protects illegal aliens instead of booting them out
  • kids that think so little of life that it doesn't even phase them to do things for "fun" that can instantly remove that life
  • schools full of kids settling their differences by shooting one another
  • kids that video-phone fights as a hobby and then post them on the Internet for everyone to be entertained by
  • ....and the list just goes on and on and on ad naseum.....

These kinds of behavior and all the other BS we have just looked the other way about has done nothing but made us slaves to perdition. We as a nation have become decadent...its that plain and that simple....and once a nation has turned that corner into becoming that then as history has 100% of the time shown everything else about that country will collapse...its morals...its values...its people become lazy with entertainment usurping productivity.....the vices become the virtues around which the people rally...it becomes shackled by numerous contradictive laws....and finally the last stage of the fall of their greatness....the economy collapses.

And you are going to tell me this cesspool we have allowed to be created right beneath our feet and now have to stand in is really great and something to look forward to having???

And please don't hand me the other BS and say "well if you don't like it you can always go to some other country where its worse than us and there is nothing but a dictatorship"......well let me say there is no country worse than a country that had it all and didn't respect having it enough to have the desire or commitment to want to preserve, nurture and keep it and instead just let it all slip away....

That my friend is one of the highest atrocities that can be allowed to occur....

And someone here will no doubt say..."all this anger just because of some foul language on the airwaves?" Well to that moron I say....how in the heck do you think it all begins...with some monstrous obtuse undeniable thing??" No it starts with something so innocent and innoculous that it slips by completely unnoticed...which is exactly how a "cancer" of any kind gets started. And that is how it has all but completely slipped away from us in the last 50 years.

So am I angery? You bet!! And that is the reason I labeled what you say as BS...because it is what it is...the same BS crap I always hear or read when someone starts to call others out on their incredulous stupidity.
