First 370Z test drive ... Mixed Emotions!
I've lusted over the 350Z when it was first released ... and now the 370Z is on my list of "must haves" for my next car purchase.
Long story short ... It's been one of my favorite cars for years now. After trolling the forum and refreshing New Posts for a while now ... I finally got the opportunity to test drive and explore the 370Z in person ... and I've been left with mixed emotions. I hoped into a 2012 Sport 6MT. Initially, the car fits me very well. I'm 6'5" 270lbs ... and this car fit like a glove. My left shoulder has about 1/2" of room under the highest position on the B-pillar seat belt arm. I've always excused the 350Z for not having the best interior quality, and from photos I've seen ... the 370Z seems to step up the level of refinement. In person (and just getting out of my GTI), the 370Z interior quality is livable. So I start up the car ... while idling I'm poking around the interior ... checking things out before the engine warms up. The shifter stalk shakes a little bit and I could feel the large engine through the steering wheel ... Japanese Muscle ;) Such a different feeling compared to the 2.0T in the GTI. My dealership co-pilot only allowed me to take the car around 1 large square block. Hardly enough time to explore the car on the road. I pushed the car to 6k RPM's a couple times and then we were back at the dealership. During the drive, I kept waiting for the power to kick in. Super sharp design and aggressive styling ... but the whole car felt kind of fat and sluggish. Made a lot of noise but didn't MOVE like I had anticipated. Almost like the car is covering up for something ... super mixed emotions on this :( Questions to the owners : 1.) First time you drove a 370Z ... How did it feel? Fall in love right away? 2.) What car did you own before the 370Z? 3.) Do I just need more time driving the 370Z? Or, if I didn't get that tingling sensation right away, should I just move on? Any information from you guys would help ... because the 370Z is such an awesome car and I've wanted one for so long! The test drive was way too fast ... I don't know ... I'm so confused  |
1) I struggled with the clutch at first. Very numb feeling. I soon got used to it.
2) 300ZX tt 3) Try it again. Get a few corners in. |

1. Loved it, scared the shit out of my dealer. They hadn't had a sports car driven like a sports car in a test drive. Instant <3 2. Scion tC 3. Go test drive it a few more times. You didn't get a fair test drive to fully be appreciative of the cars abilities and improvements over the 350z. |
I'll try and add something intelligent before the facepalmers and snide remarks make their way in here.
Last vehicle I had was a Jeep Wrangler. Fell in love with the Z right away. This car has more than enough power and better gas mileage than what I was used to. I also test drove a Camaro 2SS and you want to talk about a bloated pig, IMHO. The Z doesn't have the snap your neck power but it is very linear and will get you in trouble quick if you are not paying attention. |
Quote:
Talking to myself >>> On the drive home ... I kept reviewing all the standard features and level of refinement on the GTI which was purchased for 22K ... and wondering why the heck wouldn't the Z have all the same and for 10K more. Doubting myself and then saying F*** it! The Z should be badass right? Maybe I need to find a friend with a Z and take a drive to Santa Cruz ... explore the open road and maybe I'll fall in love! |

The 370 will be close to a 997 Porsche base model. At least this is my experience from track days. |
The power delivery is pretty linear, builds nicely all the way to redline, really. The car is deceptively fast.
1. Yes 2. 350Z 3. If you don't "get it" then yes, I'd say move on... But maybe drive it again expecting something besides being wowed with the straight-line acceleration feel. I put about 17K on my 350Z and enjoyed it quite a bit, but I had just an Enthusiast model and I felt like I wanted the leather, heated seats, etc. So for the same reason as you, basically, I felt the 370Z touring was, on paper, a bit more upscale inside, a little more power, a little less weight, and probably about like driving the 350Z. I jumped in the car and took it for a drive. I didn't take it past 4500 RPM or floor it or anything, just paid attention to how the clutch, shifter, and steering felt. Everything is better than the 350Z to a degree I didn't expect. So, I actually got "more" improvement than I bargained for. About 2 blocks away we get on a tight "clover-leaf" type on-ramp at about 50 mph and I'm sold, the steering has great feedback and feels very accurate, I'm loving the interior, I figure it's gotta be about the same "kick" as the 350Z plus a little something extra, so I'm good. Now, once I got the car broken in I of course did a few test runs (closed course, professional driver) and while the car isn't all that punchy in 6th on the highway, in 5th at 70 it's ready to go, and in 4th it's ready to get you arrested for triple digits in a big hurry (you know, if I wasn't a professional driver on a closed course.) So, it's plenty fast and it's not some wheezy low-geared anemic little thing that screams to 60 mph and falls on its face, either. But holding the gas to the floor and feeling the G-force isn't what this car is really about, so it may not be your thing if that's what you're looking for. |
Your used to the kick of a turbo. Turbos have turbo lag, and then when they hit boost you feel the sudden surge in power. The 370z doesn't have this, but rather has a very linear power curve. You will never feel the sudden rush of power with the Z unless you are going say 50mph and then drop it in 3rd and smash it. The car lacks the torque and doesn't have a turbo, so no rush in power. It's definitely faster than your GTI and fast enough for the street. It does take a little getting used to. Went from my 84 300zx and 280z, both modified, to a 06 WRX stage 1 to the 370z. Going from the old Z's to the WRX was a drastic change. After having the WRX for nearly 3 years going to the 370z was also a drastic change. The 370z just drives differently than the WRX or any other turbo car for that matter.
As for the bloated feeling, understandable. Going from my 280z to the 370z is a big difference. I'm not talking about the weight, because there is about a 800lbs difference between my two cars. I'm talking about just the size of the car. My 280z is a couple inches longer than my 370z (my 280z is bumperless by the way) and yet sitting in it it feels much smaller and confined. I like it better this way. The 370z feels much larger when behind the wheel in contrast. Haven't sat in the GTI for sometime so it's hard to remember but I would imagine it feels smaller than the 370z does. |
Drove a modified jeep wrangler for years, then a grand cheerokee (straight 6). A test drive will do nothing for you in terms of what this car was built for. Get on the highway (3-5 lanes) or even surface streets and you will realize the potential of this car. Forget blind spots, this car was built to be driven forward, on ramps, merging into traffic it's a fun car to drive and get you where you are going with a grin on your face. Modding the car is a must, really opens up some trapped hp and tq.
|
I've noticed that the 370z doesn't "feel" fast but keep an eye on the speedo and it's moving fast. I traded my 350z in for my 370z and I love it. One of my other cars is a supercharged 1970 camaro. That you "feel" fast all the time because of torque. Low torque numbers have been a soft spot for the 370z.
|
^^ This is very good to read ^^
I am getting used to the GTI and the kick you feel from the turbo. I've contemplated getting a Stage 2 tune for added and more linear power. I'm not looking for straight line power. I'm looking for a well rounded DD. Something that turns heads, fun to drive ... something with a large fan base and tons of performance options to play with. The Z was always a badass car ... fit right into my criteria :) I need to experience the 370Z outside of small residential side roads. |
^^ Thanks for the advice ^^ Is there anyone in the Bay Area with a Z?
When I got to the dealership ... there weren't any Z's out front. I was immediately confronted outside the showroom floor, and asked if there were any 370Z's in stock. I got taken around back and there were ~6-8 dusty and covered in pollen 2012's. They practically chased me down the street trying to get me to buy one lol. I probably could have gotten a really good deal if I chose to drive one off the lot, but I had too many questions. |
It whipped my head back on my first test drive. I fell in love instantly. Then I bought one. Maybe you were just expecting too much. I'll tell u the truth, I love my Z and I honestly don't think I'll ever buy another sports car other than Z's. Unless I'm a millionaire. Then I'll build my own Z from scratch. 0-60 in 1 second. 0-150 in 3 seconds.
|
^a little advice. get the sport pkg. might seem a little much but it is extremely worth it. the SRM helps with clutch life. the bigger wheels and brakes are worth it too.
i was looking at a base cayman when i got the Z. when it came down to it, the Z just had more power than a base cayman. |
came from an apr stage 3 MKVI, much faster than the z, but the z on a track is sooooooooo much more fun, it also feels more special than my gti did, that being said they arent for everyone, i dont suspect ill keep mine long as the new cayman will be out soon and if the boxster is an indication how good it will be i suggest you hold off and consider the porsche

On my first test drive on a 12Z, my driving impression was very similar to yours, not really impressed, as my test drive was very short and controlled as well. Then I had a long test drive on a 12 M3 on 2 hwy's and a mountain road, sales rep said gas it, don't be shy, so I did. I drove it over the century mark and was impressed, but this car was more than I wanted to spend. So I went for another test drive on the Z, this time I asked the sales rep if I could take it on a certain route (same as M3) and he said okay. He didn't know I was going to drive it like a bat out of hell, but I did and I was sold on the Z. While the M3 was a little faster with a smoother engine as you near red line. The Z more than holds it's own on acceleration and handling. Based on your 2nd paragraph above. The Z will fill this criteria and then some. Drove my Z on Wed, GTI on Thurs, Z on Friday. Honestly, it's no comparison, I love driving the Z soo much more. It doesn't have that push you in your seat like the GTI when the turbo kicks in, but the Z is just much faster all around. The GTI has become the practical hauler for me. Get a 2nd test drive and drive that puppy. You'll be impressed as I was. |
Quote:
1) Felt good, did not fall in love right away. I test drove one 3 times, always more interested in the handling than the power anyway. 2) Honda S2000 and Evo VIII. 3 Yes, test it again. Ignore the salesman and floor it. The power in the Z does not hit like a turbo and the Z never feels as fast as it is. I have had my 2012 m/t sport for 6 months and I'm still surprised sometimes by what the speedo says in comparison to how fast it feels like. By comparison the S2000 felt faster than it was at any speed, and the Evo had a big turbo so I always felt that kick. Also, it could be my imagination but it seems like the Z settles in after about a month. Try test driving a used one that's nice and broken in. |
Quote:
1) First time I drove the 370, feel solid, stable, the power is linear and steady, you feel the power is coming, yes, you feel the car is big, but the steering is responsive, I won't say it's super nimble, but it goes to where you point it to quickly. Overall, it is a N/A engine with 6 cylinders, you won't have that "punch" like from those turbo-charged, or those light-weight small-block 4-cyls that just give you punch only from 1000rpm to 4000rpm. It is linear and it gives you more when you ask for more... The 370z is a good step-up from the 350z, interior quality is far much better then the 350z, I can see Nissan did put efforts on the improvements  Engine vibration is gone in the 370z, you can push the engine to 7000rpm without worrying the engine is breaking-up like the 350z. 2) I drove a 350z prior to the 370z, and a bimmer 323ci with light engine-mods prior to the 350z. 3) You definitely need more time on a 370z, it's not a "Wow" machine, but it'll slowly grow on the driver. And you need to really "Drive" it to let it shows you the good, just cruise around the block doesn't mean anything... It's a sports car, you have to test drive it like a sports car, test it at 35mph around the blocks I'll suggest you test a Camry instead.... LOL :tiphat: |
yeah I'm agreeing with all the things the guys are saying here. You need to test drive it for at least 10 minutes, more if possible. I fell in love with mine, but then again it was love at first sight when the 350 came out back in '03. I went and test drove one the first week my dealership got them in. I get nothing but compliments from people that ride in my car, from the quality of the interior to the amount of room in the cabin. Also, throw on an exhaust and intakes and see if it doesn't fix your need for speed. That'll give it some kick in the pants :)
My last vehicle was a chevy s10, I've had everything from a civic to a miata to a mustang gt. |
Dude this car is way deceptivaly fast. I have had crotch rockets on the freeway toy with me several times. I play the, "I am completely oblivous to their antics till they roll into to the throttle to pull away." At that point they are not looking in their mirrors since they think me racing them is a wash and and punch it to start to the get the momentum going. They happen to glance back and I am right behind them. They always take a double take, usaully a big ole one too. But since I have the ball rolling on them, they roll full bore on the throttle and really tuck in and it is too late to shake me. As fast as they go the z stays right behind them even at that point with them looking back expecting me to be way behind them. It takes a really exspensive or really built car to honestly shake the Z. Cars that you only come across once in a super rare occasion. Everyday this car amazes me from the random compliments everyday to the sheer speed this car is capable of for $25k. It has the power to kill you really fast so you really have to respect it alot. For the first 4 months I drove all the time with the VDC on. Kinda worked my way into keeping it turned off.
I learned the first day I bought how fast it can kill you. It was still really cold, the tale end of winter, left the dealership and kicked the VDC off. Wasnt more than 5 miles or so and changed HWY's heading home. Came down the on-ramp and decided to drop to third doing 60 and hammer it a little and it totally broke loose and had me crossing 3 lanes of HWY with the tail wagging. For the next 4 months VDC stayed on. The Z is not firendly at all when the tires are cold or when it is raining from what I have seen on here with a few spinning out in the rain. I dont drive it in the rain but I can only imagine it wouldnt be fun at all.... |
1.) First time you drove a 370Z ... How did it feel? Fall in love right away? Fell in love right away. I had my mind set for a 5.0 and drove the Z for kicks. The Z, while technically slower, was the only one that threw me back in my seat. The 5.0 felt like a boat. Also drove a new GTI, fun, but not ready for practicality yet.
2.) What car did you own before the 370Z? 01 stang 3.) Do I just need more time driving the 370Z? Or, if I didn't get that tingling sensation right away, should I just move on? Drive it again, then move on if you don't feel it. |
You need time to get comfy in the car to learn the best shift points to extract the most aggressiveness from the Z. I can assure you i can throw you back pretty hard in my Z. Unfortunately, not camaro SS hard, but harder than you'd expect from a v6,
i dove a 09g37s coupe/09 370z(accident) This car is fun. Get a real test drive. Did you drive a 12 or 13? |
1.) First time you drove a 370Z ... How did it feel? Fall in love right away?
I'm probably one of the few who didn't fall for it right away. I knew I was interested but the autos I drove were ok but really didn't excite me. It took doing some thinking about what I really wanted out of a new car and driving a 6mt before I was ready to pull the trigger. I know it's shallow but it honestly came down to looks. I knew I could pick up a late model, low mile used Corvette that would blow the doors off the Z for about the same price. As weird as it may be to some people, I think the Z is way better looking. Is my Z ever going to be the fastest thing on the road? No, but unless you have a super car and deep pockets, that's never going to happen anyway. 2.) What car did you own before the 370Z? A 2006 350z (so I'm a little biased) 3.) Do I just need more time driving the 370Z? Or, if I didn't get that tingling sensation right away, should I just move on? As I said above, IMO, it's all about priorities. Decide what's most important to you in a car. Then buy the car the does the best job at meeting your needs. It's as simple as that. |
Quote:
You guys have officially gotten me excited about the 370Z again :) |
give it time it will grow on you.. in any language this car is fast imho straight line or the curves.on public roads and for safety you can only do so much neck snapping.
between the 350 and the 370 there is no comparison sorry 350 guys. except for exhaust which i have said before. oh and the radio shack radio.. |
1.) First time you drove a 370Z ... How did it feel? Fall in love right away?
The first time I drove my 370Z 7AT I knew it was better than my beloved DB 2004.5 350Z 6MT w/ bolt-ons. Everything I touched or did in it was simply better. The looks had me at hello for everything except the headlights which are now one of my favorite attributes because of how they flow with the rest of the car. The speed of this car has to be respected as it seems so slippery cutting through the air and so planted if you know what you're doing through the twisties. 2.) What car did you own before the 370Z? DB 2004.5 350Z 6MT w/ bolt-ons 3.) Do I just need more time driving the 370Z? Or, if I didn't get that tingling sensation right away, should I just move on? If you didn't feel it while walking up to the car then maybe your priorities in a car are different than what this car brings to the table. If you have a single reservation then you should get something else as this is a purpose built sports car with very few compromises for the price. Don't expect a purebred pit fighter to be gentle... |
1.) First time you drove a 370Z ... How did it feel? Fall in love right away? The first time I stood next to a GM 370z Nismo I fell in love with it. Unfortunately the dealer would not let me drive it...something about it being super exclusive or whatever. Same guys that wouldn't budge on their price, same guys that didn't get the sale, same guys who had to close less than 6 months later...but I digress. A week later I walked into another dealership, test drove it like I stole it, and then literally stole it because we got a helluva deal. Haven't looked back since.
2.) What car did you own before the 370Z? 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8...ridiculously fast. Love the Z so much more. It's fast and can handle. Probably also part of the reason it doesn't feel as fast as it is...because its very stable, much more stable than the Jeep. I wish the interior was a little more upscale, the Jeep's felt richer...but I've seen some builds in here that are both beastly and plush and that's part of the fun of it all. The wife had a 2010 Black on Black Camaro 2SS. Sexy car no doubt but it was huge. I wanted something that felt more like the cockpit of a fighter jet and the Z fit the bill. 3.) Do I just need more time driving the 370Z? Or, if I didn't get that tingling sensation right away, should I just move on? I would say spend more time. Visit a dealer that will let you drive the car, and if they don't... drive it anyway. If you're going to spend 30-40K on a sportscar you need to drive the hell out of it. I've never had a dealer refuse to sell me a car because I drove it too hard. But remember you really shouldn't be pushing the RPMs until its broken in and as most have noted, this car just gets sweeter when she's broken in. I'd like to make two recommendations. 1st find a dealer that has a used one and really put it through its paces. 2nd, find your local z meet and go. Really check out the cars and see if anyone is willing to take you on a spirited ride. If you were in SoCal I promise to take some years off your life and I'm bone stock. This car is meant to be driven with intention...it needs emotional content. Here are the cars I test drove before I got my Z for the sake of comparison...keep in mind that both my wife and I were looking and this wasn't about price...I was looking for a tough but sexy driving machine, she was looking for a luxury sedan with some respectable kick. These were all tested in an 10 month span: Audi: S5 Coupe & Convertible, A6, A7 BMW: 335ix, M3 Coupe & Convertible, 550ix Cadillac: CTS-V Ford: Mustang GT Infiniti: G37, M37, M56 Jaguar: XF Lexus: GS 350 & 550, LS 460, IS350 F Sport, ISF Mercedes: E350 Coupe, E550 Coupe & Convertible Nissan: 370z Roadster, 370z Nismo After considering what you wrote I belive that this car has everything you want. It has looks for days...my wife catches people nearly breaking their necks almost daily. The car is that sexy. It looks fast standing still. Drive it hard and it'll snap yours too. Fun factor it has in spades, especially in the twisties. As everyone else has been saying it's deceptively fast....but if you want you can make it even faster. You can also make it your own with all the mods and accessories you can imagine. Plus you're also buying into a 40+ year old legacy and a brotherhood (and sisterhood) of incredible people. For that alone its worth it to me. Good luck with your decision. Z Nation!http://img.tapatalk.com/42576b3d-6e69-0b9e.jpg |

coltrain, I know exactly what you talking about. My buddy has an 06 GTI and after he drove my car he said exactly the same thing. He felt the car is heavy. But indeed that's because the power deliver by 370z is linear, it doesn't have the kick in a GTI but it continuously pushes you while you press the gas. A GTI gets its peak torque at 1700 rpm while the 370z has to hit 5200 rpm. Wonder why a GTI driver won't be too impressed by a 370 at the first drive.
Not only you, me as an example. I drove an 06 G35 coupe before and I wasn't too impressed by the 370z at first too. I felt my g35 is more torquey and faster(throw you back to the seat). But when I let my buddy drove my z and I followed him in my g, I was surprised I could hardly keep up with my z. So there you go, the 370z is not a slower car then your GTI by your butt dyno. My g35 has more throw you back to the seat feeling but it dies down at the higher rpm. |

Firstly, if you are questioning whether or not you like it, you probably shouldn't spend 40k on it. That's how buyers remorse happens. Now that that's out of the way, a couple questions. 1. Was the A/C on when you were driving the car? My experience is that the A/C being on saps more power and throttle response from the Z than any other car I've ever driven. It really is a different beast with the A/C off. That said, the 370 will always be loud. The acceleration, while not torquey, is thrilling when the A/C is off. The vehicle is sexy as hell, and as another poster said, you will have a great deal of fun if you add some corners to your test drive. |

The A/C was on full blast when the salesman pulled the car up. I was more concerned about driving than figuring out how to turn it off lol. Let me clarify a few things ... this car is sexy! I jaw drop every time I see one. I fell in love with the look when the 350Z came out, now every tweak on that platform is just gold! My only problem was the test drive didn't match my expectations based on the bad *** look of the Z. I've watched so many review videos on YouTube ... and there's only good responses on this car. At this point I have no doubt its a great vehicle, I just need more time to drive and tinker with the 370Z without the added dealership pressure of ''Are you going to buy it? ... Are you going to buy it?'' |
I just want to make this comment on torque feel.
The cars instant torque sucks but once its broken in. If you can hit the throttle perfectly while up or downshifting, you can create a pretty strong push into your seat. Sadly, doing so is not as easy as hit the gas. I have an auto and in D, this car is ultra linear. Throw it in manual and shift just right? You're passengers will scream "slow down as they got tossed around with torque pounding them in there seat. PS V8's make torque extraction so easy and torque feel is still higher in V8's.. You have to know what you're doing in a Z to feel this. But once you master it? It takes the Z to the next level. |
Is there anyone in the Bay Area that could give me a more in depth look at their 370Z?
It took less than 1 day for me to get excited about the 370Z again lol ... I think I'm hooked. |
Definitely go drive the car again. If you want to feel power, get into second and cruise along just over 3k rpm... then punch it! :) If you don't think it's fast then, then somethings wrong. Especially if you're coming from a GTI.
Both my brother and my good buddy have GTIs so I've driven them on many occasions, and it's such a different experience. You need more time behind the wheel. If you like everything else about the Z, you'll love it once you own it - trust me. Especially if you through a few bolt on mods. The stock sound is much too tame to be enjoyed. I had test driven the 5.0 mustang before buying my Z and didn't think it was that much faster. Also I had previously owned the 350z in high school, then was carless for 3 years, then bought a Honda CBR600rr (nuts fast), then bought my 370z after college. In no ways is it lacking. GET A Z! |

1.) First time you drove a 370Z ... How did it feel? Fall in love right away?
I drove my 04 STi to the dealership and drove a brand new one. Didn't care for it really... Felt heavy and underpowered. I came back a year later and drove one after I had been driving an RSX Type S for a year and it felt amazing. I bought one. 2.) What car did you own before the 370Z? 04 Subaru STi (500whp) and 06 Acura RSX Type S 3.) Do I just need more time driving the 370Z? Or, if I didn't get that tingling sensation right away, should I just move on? I have more fun in my Z than I ever have in all of my other cars. I've had cars that are MUCH faster than this one, yet the Z is more fun to drive. I love mine and probably wouldn't get anything else... except for a Cayman S. |
Same boat as you, currently drive a scion tC that I got for free.
1.) First time you drove a 370Z ... How did it feel? Fall in love right away? No, I fell in love with the interior (not so much exterior, when it first came out I promised myself I would never buy this car, but then it grew on me and now I am ok with it, not in love but ok) Ok performance wise when I first took one for a test drive it felt big + heavy and just not fast, no "turbo" feeling or "vtec" feeling. I know the car is fast for sure but it just doesn't feel fast - and if it doesn't feel fast then obviously the engineers missed something - I like driving a fast car that feels fast. I took a base sport for another test drive 3 month since the first test drive and this time around after driving the scion tC the car now feels properly quick and I don't feel the weight much anymore (I think my s2k just spoiled me) But I still don't know whether to pull the trigger or just wait for the next gen of the Z (rumors float around that predict the new Z will be less weight/more power with a redesign) So I keep going back and forth, I am sure if the right one pops up I will pick one up but right now I just keep going back and forth. The only thing I am scared of is that I will buy the car for it's name and heritage rather then for what it is, or worse I will buy a Z right now and next year they will announce that the next gen Z will be 3000lbs or light with over 330hp. I am in an interesting situation since I am driving my cousins scion tC, she signed a contract for a year with possibility of extension to three year which means In the meantime I am driving an essentially free scion tC (best part is that she prepayed her insurance) So I am also looking for advice from fellow board members. I may make a new thread just due to my unique situation. 2.) What car did you own before the 370Z? Ap2 s2000 (bolt ons), currently cruising in a scion tC waiting on my next move. 3.) Do I just need more time driving the 370Z? Or, if I didn't get that tingling sensation right away, should I just move on? You should definitely take it for an extended test drive just like I did, make it clear to the dealer/seller that you have the funds for the car and are serious about buying it IF you like it. If you drive it and it just doesn't work for you then walk away, nothing worse then dumping 30k+ on something you will regret. But you may also fall in love with it after you take some corners and realize that there is more to the Z then meets the eye. |
