Yeah, believe it. Those Z's and parts are most likely are in either, Willets point queens, jamaica queens, east williamsburgh brooklyn, east new york/canarsie area or brownsville brooklyn. Those are the areas for the hottest chop shops in nyc. If you live in western long island all the way to flushing queens/jamaica estates, consider yourselves insta-vics on your cars and homes, if you dont have good security. It's always been this way and nothing will change. Also, these areas have a pretty high burglary rate. The upside, violent crime is lower in these areas as opposed to the rest of the city.
Those whole cars get chopped and shipped to europe or canada if the mark demands it. When they just steal the rims? They're just filling in an order from a base or touring-only Z owner that want sport rims. Its all mob run.

I feel like a fool for buying the locks.

I was away from home last month and needed to remove the wheel on my Chevelle. I didn't have the key so I hammered a 19mm 12-pt deep socket over the wheel lock and I took it off with no issue. There are videos on youtube about this, it's sad how easy it is.

The socket expands a little and grabs the outside of the lock.

HKYStormFront 08-15-2012 08:44 AM

yea you pretty much FUBAR the socket but you can get the locks off... small price to pay for high $$$ wheels

speedfreek 08-15-2012 08:53 AM

Locks only keep the honest man honest. If someone wants them bad enough they are going to get them and there is nothing you can do about it sad to say. I am sure most do but if you have not and have expensive aftermarket wheels make sure they are on your insurance...cuz they will be a hot item especially in certain locales.

Agh! The sucks!!

cossie1600 08-15-2012 09:26 AM

IMO wheel locks don't prevent wheel thefts, all they do is cause troubles for the owners when they lose it or they snap, break or come loose! You don't even have to use google, just search from this forum alone

jlbrenne 08-15-2012 10:13 AM

Dont waste your $$$$ on wheel locks. I have had wheel locks a number of times and my wheels STILL get stolen. Prepping your insurance company is the best thing that you can do IMO

The best deterrent against thieves is light. Always park in a well lite area even if its further off where everyone else is parking.

Next, though expensive, get an alarm with a tilt sensor and while your at is get a shock/glass break sensor too. Alarms don't do much because of idiots who get the proximity sensor that sets off the alarm if a bird fly's by but its going to take at least 10min for who ever it is to jack up a car and remove the wheels. And having an alarm blaring is going to be a decent deterrent too.

I'm just stilled baffled that someone has the balls to put a car on blocks (even if its 2am) and steal 4 wheels from a car right on the street...they must work quick

I can only imagine its not the most well lit street or you're on a very quiet street so not much traffic.
