Poor fuel efficiency?
Hello All,
I recently purchased a 2012 370 w/touring, sport package and manual transmission. Prior to the Z I had a 2010 Maxima. I purchased the Z with the expectation of getting around 20mpg. The sticker lists 18-26mpg, the sticker on my Maxima listed 19-26mpg which resulted in 22.5mpg for the same basic driving routine as I do in the Z....so my natural assumption was about 20mpg for the Z. Nope, I'm getting 17.4mpg after the first 1K miles. I'm driving it easy through the suggested break in period of 1,200 miles, using only 92-93 octaine fuel, mostly shifting between 2k-3k rpm. Any thoughts of what's causing such poor fuel efficiency? Are you experiencing this too? Other than this I love the Z but if I would have known this up front I might have reconsidered the purchase. Pretty sure I can get V8 muscle at 17.4mpg. Thoughts? |

According to my in-car computer or whatever you call it. I'm only averaging 10.8 mpg @ 11 MPH or something like that...590 miles on her already. I'm not sure if it's normal or not, but it's been stuck on that number since delivery. But based on my most recent fill up, I'm getting around 14.8. All city, no highway and shifting around 2500 rpm.

It also depends on driving conditions. If you drive in a lot of stop and go traffic, expect to get poor gas mileage in the Z. If you're on the interstate getting those kinds of numbers, then something isn't right.
I get around 18.5 average but I deal with a lot of traffic every day. Even on the interstate. When I did a little longer interstate trip a couple of weeks ago, I was closer to 22 or so. I love the Fuelly website for keeping track of all my fuel usage, prices and mileage. It can really help you with tracking your results over longer periods of time so you can spot trends on your fuel economy. Plus, it gives you a nice record of how many miles you're really driving during any given time period. |

I agree this car eats more gas than the Nissan Titan, I wish I would saved up more and got a boss mustang or m3

I would expect around 22 - 24 mixed driving with the occasional run through the gears. Unless you're driving a lot of stop-and-go that does seem awfully low.
My '12 is still in the break-in period and I believe I've been getting around 24 mpg. As far as driving style/break-in I pretty much let it rev to close to 4,000 RPM every time I run through the gears. Keep in mind that the motor in these cars is not making much torque at low RPM so it's not efficient there, at 2,000 RPM. What I'm saying is... I suppose maybe you could be getting slightly worse mileage due to short-shifting but less than 18 mpg seems pretty extreme and I expect you have an issue of some sort. |
First, how are you getting the numbers. I average around 22-25 mpg of mixed driving...and have gotten close to 30mpg of all highway. I tend to drive on the spirited side also most of the time. If you're going to use the on board computer, make sure you reset it first by holding down the button. You can't go fast without burning more fuel...period. I hope you're joking with v8 'Muscle' cars getting better fuel economy.

It's the fuel as well using ethanol you won't see as good of gas mileage with it and during the summer the hotter temps you will use more gas.
Same mileage I get driving nicely as well and I have a 60 mile round trip. |
Just have fun with it.
Welcome OP,
Man just drive the car and don't look at the gas mileage. The car was meant to be driven fast and never looking down at the gas meter. |
