Has anyone tried drifting!? HOW

nissan 370z drifting tripoli - gymkhana - MK PRODUCTION - YouTube
Check out that vid, amazing quality
And someone give me rundown on how to drift in the 370!

Your profile says you drive a Benz?

DarkJak 07-29-2012 01:49 AM

I remember seeing that video for the first time. It was really impressive, both the drifting and the location.
I've tried getting the back end out before on my car, but it snaps out fast for me and I always panic too much and let off instinctively. Short wheelbase+wide sticky tires make it so you have to be more familiar with the car, although I'm sure the basics would be the same as most other cars.

Most important though is to find a large open lot that's empty so no one gets pissed.

Good post. I havent seen this vid. Thanks OP. Are you sure the car in the vid is stock?

2nd gear kick the throttle

mhcoss 07-29-2012 10:13 AM

take a quick corner in a low gear mash on the gas. pretty simple :D

red6spd 07-29-2012 10:15 AM

The Z does not like waging her tail.

Minsu 07-29-2012 10:16 AM

Lawl if i drift the benz ill be dead in a couple mins, no but im getting a z within the month so just wondering what i can do.
and i think that under the vid post it tells the specs? i might be mistaken

I dunno, I break mine loose almost daily :icon17:

First thing I do everytime I get in the car is turn off TCU. My tires are wearing fast though I'm going to have to chill it out.

Well if I really tried I could break my loose all the time to but I really have to try unlike my two friends with a Trans AM and a Mach1 who can just tap the gas on the turn and their doing some Ken Block Sh** but I know that's due to garbage suspension and high amounts of TQ.

:iagree: i do the same thing-gut reaction is to immediately let off-havent had the guts to really get into it yet. Chirping the tires in 2nd is fun though!

(getting more intimate w Z daily-will post up as soon as i actually get confidence and circumstances aligned!)

Jsolo 07-29-2012 11:25 AM

It's one of those things like going hot into corner on a bike. Survival reaction is to chop the throttle which upsets the suspension, makes the bike want to stand up, resulting in an even wider corner. Right thing to do is to remain calm and relaxed (esp upper body), when in doubt, give it more throttle.

I'm sure similar concept applies here. Find yourself a big open parking lot with no light poles or other fixtures and have at it.

DarkJak 07-29-2012 12:33 PM

For people who have practiced in open lots: Has anyone ever given you trouble over it? Store owners or even police?

370ZNISMO#704 07-29-2012 12:34 PM

So this was me on a wet day but it dont
After if it's wet or dry its gonna be harder in a 370 to drift then a nismo because of your open diff. You need a 1.5 LSD at least to be able switch back drift. You can always faint drift going into a corner hot and throwing the car off balance and coming out of the corner in a drift. Or e-brake into it which locks the rear with the clutch in and then turn and pop the clutch to get the wheels to spin with no traction. Also turn of ur rev match.

the one time dirfted was in a parking lot, but it was at night so no cops or store owners were present....however I wouldn't recommend doing it. :icon17:

:iagree: was able to do this myself with very little effort required...had it in 1st with vdc off and gunned it through a right hander, drifted perfectly and once i was through the turn slapped it down into second and took off like normal. my 370 gave me a sense of confidence while doing this as it just was so balanced i could not believe it, love this car even more the more i drive it and get used to it.

I had that problem with the stock tires on the sports package (back goes out really quick). That is what I liked about the hankooks even though they have less grip (are much cheaper and last longer and quieter) is that they seem much more predictable when you are loosing traction.

jae35 07-29-2012 03:58 PM

sick vid, hadn't seen it

mhcoss 07-29-2012 04:49 PM

Yea I wouldn't recommend practicing it often unless you enjoy buying 1500 dollar sets of tires every three months

Remember parking Lots can be very slick..They seem to be slicker than the public roads.

So be careful. I have been known to do a side show or two..Not in the 370Z....Yet.

Also select on ramps are a good spot for a drift..Provided it is early morning and no one is around...

i like watching it but no way would i try it....
with my budget couldn't afford the tires or transmissions

kenchan 07-29-2012 09:01 PM

yah, slight kick-out here and there on faster turns is fine for me. :icon17:

SailFree 07-29-2012 10:27 PM

The language is being debased. What is today called "drifting," after the Fast-and-Furious series corruption of the language, is really a power slide. It's inefficient and slow and hard on rear tires.

ScGRaceR 07-29-2012 10:28 PM

i just turn in brappppp stand on it. dont hit anything. slam gear and keep driving

Alstann 07-29-2012 10:52 PM

I've been getting into drifting. Definitely way more cost effective to have a second set of cheapo wheels and tires. :driving:

^ got any video ?

B&W_Evader 07-30-2012 03:15 PM

I'd recommend getting some stiff swaybars to make it easyier. I personally didn't feel confortable when the rear end came out on my 370Z till I got my Eibach sways. Now I can pitch out the rear end without worrying too much.

Also, if you can afford it, get a better rear end that locks quicker. My posi-traction vette was just awesome to pitch sideways and just hold the RPMs at 5500-6000 until you're speed caught up to the tire spin. Needed a little finness since there was no rev limiter on that one.

you mean like a LSD? that would definitely make drifting more consistent, i think. :)

DarkJak 07-30-2012 05:40 PM

Would stiffer springs help in the same way that a stiffer swaybar would?

Very good idea. Just buy some cheap wheels and tires so that you dont burn up money on your dd set

DjSquall 07-31-2012 05:30 AM

The Z is very unforgiving with drifting... I started out with some lighter power slides into corners, and after a couple years in it I finally feel comfortable putting her sideways. It's fun but the tires don't last so long lol.

I've only gone out twice so far, but I'm not half bad. I can hold the drift having stsrted before the turns and hold it all the way to the next transition point, and from there, it's hit or miss if i can weight transfer to the other side. Full loops in one direction are pretty doable, though. I had a friend in the car with my cellphone recording, but as this was at midnight, it's really hard to see. I could try uploading the outside view, though.

Definitely stiffer springs or swaybars would help, imo. Through drifts, the wheels would hop since the suspension was soft enough to allow that, and it made controlling precisely more difficult. But still, with the VLSD and stock suspension, it's more than enough to have a little fun. Keep in mind my drift spares are Infiniti M35 wheels, 18x8.
