Need Convincing Advice

I'm a newly licensed driver and I am looking for a car.

I need to be able to convince my parents that 370z is a good choice over the Toyota Avalon, Lexus IS, Mercedes C-Class, and BMW 328i.

These vehicles are within the 30 to 40 grand range so there shouldn't be any price issues. I'll be test driving each vehicle.

Any ideas? :)

Minsu 07-26-2012 06:07 PM

be like mom,
how much faster do you want me to get pussy
Guarantee she will get u the 370z

KaienZ34 07-26-2012 06:09 PM

Show them you can drive it responsibly and that the maintenance/repair cost is lower on the Z than most of the others, save the toyota.

This is true. My GF was giving me crap for a while before I got my Z, for that exact reason lol.

That's a great idea. I just hope that I might be able to obtain maintenance prices for each of the vehicles though. Like for BMW there's this BMW Ultimate Service™, first 4 years $0 maintenance but that doesn't mean it's cheaper than the Z in terms of maintenance prices. I'll have to find accurate maintenance costs.

@whoady4shoady
If you don't have a suggestion then please don't post.

ouch outmanned and it was only his second post.

ben1620 07-26-2012 07:39 PM

I've been able to get 25-32mpg @70-85mph if I pay attention (manual shift 7AT). I average about 16-19mpg while driving pretty hard.

Tell them you absolutely do not want the Z.. Tell them it reminds you of the past when they were kids ...and they certainly did not know how to have fun.

.Tell them it reminds you of something they would drive as a kid that it is far too slow in pickup and top end...Tell them most hot women would never want to go out with a guy with such a car..

Then stand back and try not to smile as they demand you get either an automatic or a stick ...

Then say stick.

I wonder if I can achieve 32 mph on the highway.

I followed Kaien's advice

I got such prices using calculators and build a vehicle demos.

These are all estimates however. Also, does anyone know where I can get long term test results for the 370z?

I do appreciate the serious answers.

why do you care about gas mileage? Why dont you actually get a car you can afford instead of swiping your parents Chevron gas card.

The 370Z would not be my first choice for a new driver. Drive another car for a year and then reconsider the Z.

I understand your concern but what my parents can afford is none of your business.

@Kaien I thank you for the long term test results.

Now I'll see what vehicle I do get. If I do get a Z, I'll post back.

But really, all these negative comments are not needed. :(

Also, I am confident enough of my driving skills and it's not like I'm going to be driving a Z within a month or so anyway, no worries.

I think 26 is the best mpg I've ever gotten but to be honest i never look at that anymore i just drive it and enjoy.

Forums are like strip clubs man...you got the hot ones...and the ugly ones. Having negative comments are just the nature of the beast. We just need to be smart enough to sift through the garbage and take it with a grain of salt.

I don't know you from anyone else on this forum...but a 370 seems like a bit too much car for someone who just got their license and is inexperienced behind the wheel. Though none of us are your parents and it's not our business what car you decide to get...we are allowed to give our opinions or "advice" as you requested.

Good luck with whatever you choose and welcome to the forum!

imwazn 07-26-2012 10:53 PM

I was 19 when I got my Z. I know you say you will be responsible right when you get your license, but I find myself doing stupid things with it all of the time. I drove a 150 hp four banger for three years and still got a speeding ticket with it. When people say get a cheaper, slower car for experience and then get a nicer car, they don't say it without reason. It isn't what you can afford, it's about what you can handle.

buddyZ 07-26-2012 11:00 PM

I wish i could give this kids parents "convincing advice"

I mean i can understand 10,000 fake tits for girls after they graduate high school but now kids are getting 35,000 sports cars plus their insurance and gas paid for WOW must be nice...

Community College crew

90 ST 07-26-2012 11:05 PM

i get over 30 mpg on the hwy no problem.
as for an argument for your 'rents, you can only take one friend along, so they know you wont have a bunch of friends egging you on to do stupid sh1t...

GunMetal40thZ 07-27-2012 09:49 AM

The real question is how are your parents going to feel when you wreck it? I am willing to bet about 99% of the people on this forum and in general wrecked their first vehicle. Either from doing something stupid or some random driver's fault. The inexperience of a new driver opens the door to turning a minor situation that is avoided by more experienced drivers into a collision that totals the car. Just my .02.

TerribleONE 07-27-2012 09:55 AM

I had an EVO as my first car... got a few tickets but not one accident. Guys being I am still a fairly young Z owner, everyone is different and some people can actually handle the responsibility of having a fast first car. If I had my pick between those rides I would take the Z if you dont need a back seat! Good luck and keep it safe

B&W_Evader 07-27-2012 10:03 AM

My advice would be you need to drive something slower and learn to drive before you get something fast. Everyone I've know to start with a fast car has wrecked it, some have died in them. Do yourself a favor and start with a 4 banger and work your way up. If you must have a new car, the FRS and BRZ would be the fastest car you should be considering. They're probably still too fast as a first car. Why don't you start with an old 240SX where you won't feel so bad when you plant it in the side of a mountain. Then you can sell your parents on "I've learned my lesson, now I should get a really fast car" :icon14:

B&W_Evader 07-27-2012 10:18 AM

Just show your parents this article..

Almaden Valley crash kills 4: CARS' OCCUPANTS, TWO PEDESTRIANS PERISH WHEN CAR LOSES CONTROL. - San Jose Mercury News (San Jose, CA) | HighBeam Research

Teenage boys are not known for thier good judgement. Has something to do with a chemical imbalance that takes time to work it's way out.

RiCharlie 07-27-2012 10:18 AM

you can do like my son did..he told me "Dad I am really under a lot of stress and like a lot of kids I am tempted to take drugs..I feel if I could only have a new car it would give me something other than drugs to occupy my time"

Ya! he actually said that..I am not kidding..

Years later he is employed in sales..is it any wonder?

And as always I bet they thought nothing could happen to them..
They were incredible drivers and it was always the other guys fault..

Hell I was in my 20s and still acting like an idiot..still do..

I can find plenty of examples of "adults" crashing their cars and injuring/killing people. No one likes stereo types, and some kids CAN handle the responsibility. Hell, I got my pilots license at 18, if they let kids FLY they can handle a entry level sports car. If they are going to do something stupid, it could happen in a dae-woo or a Z... IMO

B&W_Evader 07-27-2012 10:30 AM

Took me till about 25, but yeah, I still drive like an idiot occasionally. I'm just a lot more picky about where I do it. Had 3 4-bangers before I got my first fast car, a supped up 1971 240z. I was about 22 at that time. Only Z I knew without a cracked dash!

But there's a reason why your insurance will be 3-4x what I'm paying...

edub370 07-27-2012 10:33 AM

apparently i needed wealthier parents at 16 years old lol

TerribleONE 07-27-2012 10:34 AM

I pay 67$ a month on my Z.. bet its not that much more :) I agree that statistics do prove your point. However it is not fair to automatically assume that bad things will happen. My evo never had a mark on it, grew up with kids with nice cars (M3s, vette's, V8 chargers, ect) that had absolutely no issues taking care of them...

kenchan 07-27-2012 10:35 AM

well, 99% of kids cannot be trusted. you are probably the rare 1%.

I guess it helps growing up in the desert driving my parents truck around, and riding MX since I was 3.. I mean I had my street bike permit at 15 1/2 and was riding an R6... Never dropped it or got a ticket. I remember at 12 years old I was launching my families boat, backing it down the ramp with no one in the truck but me! the good ole days. Just sayin, not all 16 year olds are incompetant

ANY smart newly licensed driver should NOT be confident in their driving abilities. There are so many dangers of the road that take time to get used to. Even if you've been racing cars on the track all your life, the real road poses many threats and should not be underestimated. I suggest you not be confident in your abilities.

What you can be though is disciplined, and that is something that will allow you to own and stay safe in a sports car. I drove an '86 celica for a year or two then bought and paid for a 350z when I was 17... on my own. But that's another argument to be had.

If you're disciplined then there should be no problem. But don't give your parents the argument that you are a "skilled" driver... because you can't be yet.

That reminds me of places where kids can drink at a young age, and most of them grow up not binge drinking or doing stupid things while heavily intoxicated from what I have read.

thats actually usually how it works.. the most sheltered ones end up in the most trouble..

Garrett63 07-27-2012 11:59 AM

The Z doesn't scream "I'm driving my dad's car" like the BMW or "Mom's car" with the Mercedes. only thing that comes to mind is "damn that's a nice car.." To kids around that age, people would just think you're a really young entrepreneur.
