I never open the trunk........ ;)

I just push it down once it is almost closed

well, with the stock spoiler and Carbonsignal add on spoiler, it puts more weight on the hatch in my case, so just letting it go a couple inches off will usually close the hatch, any higher, and it slams shut, which makes me cringe.

any harm done if close using the "rest on body and push down" method?

I use my finger to pull the latch, then I put my finger tips on the edge of the inside of the hatch and guide it down, then I gently use the side of my hand (to avoid touching the paint with my fingers) to push down on the hatch and fully close it. I used to grab the latch, and pull hard enough to shut by itself, but like Fastfatdude said, it seemed harsh so I stopped doing it.

Mine does in the cold, I would usually have to press the hatch release button a couple times and pull to open it.
