Well some keys have microchips/batteries in them. Sorry but I wasn't sure about the Z key.

No our chips/signals are in the FOBs I believe... even if the key has a chip usually they are not powered and won't fail if submerged.

Just tested. Tin foil in the glove box works like a charm. Now to test the mech key's waterproof...ness? Waterprooficity? Waterprooficiency? (2 foot overhead! Woot!).

There are several antennas around the car and it can tell if the fob is inside or outside the car. Throw the fob inside and try to lock your doors - doesn't work. ;)

I ran my key through the wash and it still works

Alternatively, find a small waterproof bag to put it in. That's what I do with my camera/cell phone

Did this when I went diving. Not a good idea because your key will rust. The disadvantage of push button start. I guess only option is to remove the battery and hide the key somewhere outside the car.
