mpg....everything went better than expected!

im averaging 27.7 mpg. this seems insane to me. this is a combination of stop n go city traffic, highway and interstate. i took a trip to new orleans for the break in, but cleared it afterward, thinking it was because of highway miles. not so. my work commute, although mostly highway, has lots of heavy traffic city driving, and i am still at 27.7 after 3 days. 1150 on the odometer as of today. i drive a bit modestly i suppose, but i let her stretch her legs here and there where the road allows it, opening her up a bit. how are you all doing in the mpg department, and how does your driving style apply?

370ZilverZ 03-28-2012 08:22 AM

MPG meter is a wasted meter in a sports car IMO. If I'm getting over 20, then I'm not driving hard enough.

Pauly 03-28-2012 08:23 AM

haha yea you're right. im being a p*ssy i guess. im sure it will go down now that the break in is over. (a period of usage arguably useless according to many)

Zoren 370 03-28-2012 08:28 AM

What is your ave speed city and highway?
I only Ave. 19.5mpg but I occasionally rev it about 3.5-4.5K.
Hwy ave 70-80mph, city being in a rural area ave 50-60mph

370ZilverZ 03-28-2012 08:30 AM

I've always broken mine in like I'm going to drive them and never once had any issues doing that.

Pauly 03-28-2012 08:58 AM

well i go around 65 on interstates, so i guess thats cheating a bit. sometimes even 60 if im not in a hurry or messing with pandora. people hate it, but at least i stay out of the left lane! i get it up around 4-4.5k rpm on a pass or on ramp, but usually just chilling.

Chteelers 03-28-2012 09:13 AM

only 4.5k? I'm well into 6k every time I drive.

Gauge 03-28-2012 09:17 AM

I get like 28-29 highway and 19(ish) city which matches what nissan told me, so I'm happy.

TerribleONE 03-28-2012 09:17 AM

My average will never be that high but nice!

kenchan 03-28-2012 09:32 AM

i dont really care about mpg on my G or Z just as long as i get over 15 ave. if less than 15 for my kind of driving, chances are something's wrong with the ECU setting.

zguynate 03-28-2012 09:37 AM

That MPG meter cant be trusted. Do it the old fashioned way. Divide the miles driven by gallons filled after a full tank. My 350 used to tell me I was getting close to 30 mpg when I was really getting 23ish.

A more accurate way to compare what everyone is getting is how many miles someone is able to get out of a full tank.

kenchan 03-28-2012 09:39 AM

yah, on the tank to tank method 3 tanks average, i was doing 15mpg on my G as dd and now with warmer temps and i think non-oxygenated gas i am getting about 18-19mpg. on the Z, like i said, i dont care. :icon17:

agreed. using the old fashioned method, i get an average of 16-17mpg city and 23-24 mpg highway.

slo 03-28-2012 10:07 AM

I have had cars that got as little as 8mpg (modded 03 cobra) and up to 32mpg on my recent 135i on the highway.

The Z has a decent sized gas tank so I fill up after about 440 miles and I average 27-28 mpg since during the week it's almost all highway mileage (70 per day).

prochobo 03-28-2012 10:24 AM

Normally I get 21.5 combined city/hwy. I've gotten close to 31 on strictly highway doing about 70 on a 330mi round trip. On a road trip of about 1200mi I got 26.5 doing 85-90 most of the way.

tonythetiger 03-28-2012 10:38 AM

i have no idea how u can get it that high, my avg. MPG 22.2

Pauly 03-28-2012 10:40 AM

good idea. thought about doing it that way but discovered i am very lazy (hence the 7AT) and i guess i should just stand on it. or have by balls continuously busted on my threads lol

Huck 03-28-2012 10:42 AM

Driving her back from New York I got about 27mpg, daily I get about 19.5 with some aggressive driving thrown in sometimes (read: almost all the time).

Sent from my iPizzle using magic and new fangled science stuff.

Pauly 03-28-2012 10:42 AM

gonna do it the old fashion way and repost in a few weeks.

Much of it can depend on driving habits, I'm the type when the car in front of me speeds up, I stay constant, if I need to speed up, I don't floor it, just slightly increase the throttle. Traffic sometimes may pull a few cars ahead, but that's about it and I gradually catch back up.

Other times they pull ahead just to slow down immediately, if I was maintaining my speed, many times it all equals out and I don't waste the gas by using more throttle, then braking, then throttling again.

BigT 03-28-2012 11:12 AM

I don't really drive my Z on the highway much. I'm averaging 16 in the city. Goes up to 17 or so if I have a little highway mixed in there.

Pauly 03-28-2012 11:12 AM

:iagree: this is exactly how i drive in traffic, and probably why avoiding as much stop and go as possible keeps me from wasting fuel.

Pauly 03-28-2012 11:57 AM

was agreeing with slo, must have posted a bit too late.

dennis26 03-28-2012 12:27 PM

Right now I'm on nite shift with little traffic. Ave. 24mpg. On day shift with traffic thrown in lucky to get 21mpg.

Ages 03-28-2012 01:01 PM

I'm at 14.6 lol and since my gen3 last week I'm at 13.7 getting uprev this Saturday . Let's see if that helps.

I used to think this way, but the one in the 370z is pretty spot on so long as you reset it after every fillup.

I still do my own calculation regardless as I do not always reset it.

Pauly 03-28-2012 01:06 PM

ages, do you ever use the throttle other than a foot rest? 13mpg, that is awesome bro. a real driver!

Z_ealot 03-28-2012 08:56 PM

personally i've averaged 23.5 mpg all city driving on one tank, but that was with driving like an old granny all over the city and rarely ever going over 2k rpm, as far as highway the longest trip i've been on is a trip from santa ana, CA to kingman, AZ and averaged around 27 mpg going 65 to 70mph most of the way and uphill most of the way at that. second longest round trip i've made is from fullerton, CA down to san diego and averaged around 32 mpg on that trip, definitely better than expected mpg than what nissan estimates it gets :)

Mandingo 03-28-2012 09:18 PM

I average 15-16 mpg because I redline the poor thing at least 5 times per day :driving: and just generally drive like a maniac. A safe maniac :tiphat:

Doing this same exact method I get identical numbers that you are getting. If I granny it I get maybe an extra 40 miles to the tank? I fill up when there is 1/3 tank so at best I'm getting 240 miles to every fill. I know I've gone as low as 160miles on 2/3 tank. And to be honest, I haven't driven anywhere near as hard as I drove my 09. My 09 gave me 300 miles on 2/3 of a tank consistantly. And I beat that b1tches gas pedal up. I'm disappointed with my 11 mileage.

roplusbee 03-28-2012 10:33 PM

On roadtrips, the Z is actually really good with fuel consumption. I have a few trips from Fort Hood, TX to Fort Gordon, GA and one from Fort Hood, TX to Baltimore, MD (and back of course). I didn't let the fuel go below 1/4 tank, but I was always above 330 miles at the time.

Local commutes are a whole different animal though. If I got 300 miles out of a full tank (no dots left) I was happy.

mick 03-29-2012 12:25 AM

fuel consumption is not a priority for me. If it was, i would have bought a different car :)

theboydiddy 03-29-2012 12:34 AM

agree with buddy up there, however i got out of a full tank 35miles.
i drive mostly highway, i still breaking her in i have less than 1000 miles and i be making from 0-60mph using all 6 gears. sometimes i catch myself doing 40-50mph on 5-6th gear.

waterbull 03-29-2012 12:47 AM

I got about 500 miles on full tank

Pauly 03-29-2012 05:03 AM

with a name like mandingo, all we can expect is "go big" :icon18: yea im glad nissan didnt over-hype the mpg thing. a nice little suprise after buying a car, even if we never make use of it (mandingo):rofl2:

Mecinoid 03-29-2012 05:18 AM

I'm somewhere between 25-27.5mpg generally. I drive 5mph over the speed limit. Beat all the traffic to wherever I'm going. However, rarely do I bury the thottle.

The best mileage out of a tank of gas I've gotten is freeway with hills/turns at 28.5mpg. The worst mpg is when she is driven like she was meant to be driven about 21mpg. I'm very happy.

I'm still in break in as far as I'm concerned with only 4500 mile on my car. Tomorrow is a oil change so maybe my mileage will go up. I guess I should take a long drive down HWY 5 to see what my best mpg can be.

Believe it or not this about the same mileage I get in my LS1 cars. About the same HP but, they have 2 more cylinders.

Ages 03-29-2012 05:52 AM

I should also add that I have never driven my Z with the SRM off and I'm sure that kills mpg some also, but it's so awesome.......

Pauly 03-29-2012 05:53 AM

thanks for your posts everyone. seems like this machine is capable of incredible mpg considering its power. depending on driving habits of course

zguynate 03-29-2012 12:11 PM

I usually get around 22mpg. About 380-390 per tank before I fill up.
