Press and Hold or Press and Let Go?

I've been seeing that many people start their 370z holding the push start button down. Why is that? I have always just press the button and let go of it. My car still starts perfectly fine. Enlighten me.

Spikuh 03-12-2012 09:05 AM

Probably a carry over for anyone accustomed to using a key.

Sometimes I hold, sometimes I press and let go. Depends on if I am multitasking.

TerribleONE 03-12-2012 09:09 AM

+1 ^ I think its a habbit more than anything.

Works either way, I live my life 1/4 mile at a time and can't waste precious seconds holding some button that I can just press instead.

kenchan 03-12-2012 09:29 AM

i thought the push button looked like an elevator button so i just push and release.

LOL!:bowrofl:

m4a1mustang 03-12-2012 12:14 PM

I would just press the button my Z. On the 5.0 I just have to flick the key, no need to hold. Same with the CLK500. The S2000 I actually have to hold the button down, though. SO CONFUSING.

scottIN 03-12-2012 12:15 PM

Along the same lines...

Is the cranking over 'manufactured' to sound cool? I know that most of my recent cars have started up a heck of a lot quicker than the Z with just a turn of the key. Almost feels to me like they pull the spark or something the first few revolutions to get it to sound like that. Anyone know?

GMTraitor and I were talking about this over the weekend. His Maxima fires up a lot quicker than any of the Z's do with the same push button type start.

TheGreatOne 03-12-2012 02:01 PM

couple times I've just pressed lightly, it wasn't enough, car didn't turn, so I seem to press and hold for one second

Hope you didn't press the button and wait for the chirp "Ding" like waiting for an elevator before you drive off.....

Just a curiosity, anyone experienced a failure on the start button??

thetaste 03-12-2012 02:40 PM

Some vehicles take longer starting to help minimize oil starvation at startup.

i thought the quick wipe cycle on the wipers were pretty sporty.

alcheng 03-12-2012 04:13 PM

You press and let go.... it won't start

So you press and hold.... it won't start

You press and let go then press and hold..... it won't start

==> Steering Lock Failure..... :shakes head:

uh oh.... did yours go out? :icon14:

Vaughanabe13 03-12-2012 04:44 PM

I just press until I hear the car starting and then let go. Sometimes if I press the button too quickly it doesn't activate, but at the same time I don't like to hold it longer than necessary.

HandnPantz 03-12-2012 09:34 PM

Yeah I have an 09 and sometimes when I push the button (with the clutch down) it will change from off to ON but wont start. It only has 24,000 miles and Im not Ronnie Coleman.......

370ZilverZ 03-12-2012 09:39 PM

Press and release just like on a keypad. Never had a start failure.

MattP725 03-12-2012 11:31 PM

The proximity sensor on my car really blows... sometimes I have to hold it for a second to make sure it recognizes the key.

I'm sort of wondering if you don't have your "battery saver switch" in? There's a couple fuses that the dealer leaves popped out so the battery doesn't go dead. Among the functions is the intelligent key "always searching" (i.e. the way it should work is the car is always looking for the fob, and it will have already found it once you walk up and by the time you press the button it's already authenticated, vs the battery saving function where it never searches until you press the button, then it goes through all that which takes some time), the air conditioning memory, and the intelligent key chime. Do you get a chime when you unlock the doors with the request switch?

Try putting your foot on the brake..:icon18:

LakeShow 05-17-2012 02:30 PM

I press and hold it till engine starts.

Dallaz 05-17-2012 02:36 PM

I'm a valet and just about every single newer model vehicle is either push start or just flick the key and release. It actually annoys me to have to hold the button down during the whole process instead of just pressing an releasing. New range rovers are one of the few newer vehicles with push start that require you to hold the button the whole time instead of just pressing and releasing, they need to step their game up

Speedy 05-17-2012 03:01 PM

On my Challenger, you have to hold the button down while the engine cranks. It doesn't do it on it's own. However in my Z I just press and let go.

Nick911sc 05-17-2012 03:22 PM

Guys... How many times do we have to go over this? Print this and leave it on your dashboard for when you get into the car...

Never really checked to be honest... I don't have Nav so my AC controls don't change. I do have a chime when I open and close the doors with the outside button (horn with the keypad). Worth looking into.

Drex 05-17-2012 07:03 PM

I read it somewhere on these forums but that was a while ago. It stuck with me though so now pressing and holding is second nature to me

Yup

I still reach for keys sometimes in the Z :rofl2:

Vbp6US 05-18-2012 12:56 AM

I always press and release immediately. It's just completing a circuit I think which triggers the locking mechanism to disarm.
