Default Hard starting

Fired up the 2010 Z coupe Monday morning in frigid but not freezing temps. The engine wouldn't catch. Struggling to fire properly with all the usual idiot lights flashing. Finally caught but the exhaust was choking...I can still taste it. Took the car to a local garage (not a Nissan dealership) and it seemed to check out fine. Never had a problem starting in two years, although this was the first time it's ever been parked outside for a couple of Canadian fall days.

Does the massive exhaust smoke come from all the unburned fuel being pumped into the cylinders? Sorry but I'm not much of a gear head....the Z had been fine ever since. Forgot to mention....the brake pedal couldn't be pushed in during the start (it's an automatic A7)....it's as though the car didn't want me to push the button?? Cheers.
