Definitely plastic. Let us all know if you find something to clean them that takes the bad stuff off but doesn't take the finish off.

You won't rub off the metal plating which should be fairly beefy. You can basically use anything for metal finishes as long as it doesn't remove material (i.e. sandpaper or grinding). Preserving the stock texture is going to be difficult though.
