Someone on here has a DIY, just search for it.

You can tap into the rear plate power and ground wires. That will make the light turn on and off when you turn your lights on. If you want to be able to manually turn it on and off, you'll have to buy the wiring kit and install that into the car.

Z1 offers the OEM wiring kit and the steering column controls, but that is going to be a little more complicated to install.

:iagree:

OP, the wire harness Z1 offers is basically two wire you tap into the liscense plate light (short harness) or the brake/signal light (long harness). I used the short harness meathod. Installing it is pretty easy with some basic tools like a socket set etc. Both kits come with the "clamp type" taps, but it kept falling loose, so I soddered the wires together. Wraped it with some heat shrink and it's worked perfectly. It comes on/off with the rest of the lights so having a separate for the light alone isn't really a big deal. Most people would likely leave it on anyways. OP, if you have some basic mechanical skills, just do it yourself and save some cash. It just two wires, very difficult to mess up.

I had the stock one on my car (Actually came with the car here in Canada) Loved it! It was damn bright

I can change an alternator or put in my own intakes, exhaust etc, with instructions. But I get nervous with electrical but I think I'll give it a whirl. Sounds pretty easy. So I would like it to stay on but brighten when its braked or reversed. Actually I wouldn't mind it blinking in reverse only.

Speaking of blinking. Going slightly off subject. My wife was parking the Z. I noticed when she put the car in reverse. The center brake light blinked like 3x. I thought this was a really kool feature. Never noticed any other car do that before.

For that, you'll need to tap on a brake light obviouslly. If you want it to work for reverse and brake, its gonna be more complicated. Can be done, but more work and some searching on the forum.

I forgot who's car this was.

Thanks I will look it up and see if that level of electrical would be something i'd feel secure doing?

All I can add to this conversation is that its very annoying driving behind a Z with this mod. Kind of like the euro snobs that run around with their rear fog light on. It hurts the eyes.

:iagree: I didn't think much of mine either until I followed a buddy with one, I now only have mine on when it's some combination of foggy/rainy/night, which happens a lot up here in Washington! If I were the OP, I'd go the switch option so you can have the fog light independant of the normal lights. The Z-Store has a nice OEM style switch that goes by the cup holder but it's very pricey and does involve tearing the interior out to route it, sounds daunting but once you've done it once it really isn't that hard.

This light is awesome! is this the OEM one that Z1 sells?

Dembflyr 09-28-2011 09:15 PM

I have the JDM one from Z1.

I modified mine to have a dual filament bulb. I agree that it's way too bright to have on as a parking light otherwise.

I have the lower wattage filament wired to the parking lights and I have the brighter one wired to the brake light and to a switch so it can be used as a rear fog light when needed. Everything is isolated with relays.

I also have a flashing brake light module that just flashes the light six times then goes solid. I like it. It takes away the bicycle look.

I have it illuminate with braking and flash with reverse. I also have an override that I cut on during rain or fog.

That's what I'm going for buddy. I get sick of people riding so close to my azz. I think this foglight is the perfect fix.
