Anyone got pull over cause of your after market exhaust yet?

I am about to drop some money on a new exhaust system but i cant help it but to wonder. Especially living in cali and in a cop infested city is kinda holding me back a lil.

Anyone got cited for aftermarket exhausts yet?

geosZ 07-20-2011 06:57 AM

Aftermarket exhausts aren't that loud. It gets loud when you throw on test pipes or something like that. Good luck with install

3SeventyZ 07-20-2011 07:12 AM

Nope, not yet in the 370.

I have been pulled over in my 350 for an illegal exhaust once before.

I have the GT Haus tail piece..its pretty loud at 4k+ rpms but haven't been pulled over yet. We will see if i get the mid-pipe though :ugh2:

KillerBee370 07-20-2011 10:17 AM

Never happened in my Evo and hasn't happened since Feb 09 in my Z.

kenchan 07-20-2011 10:39 AM

not yet for me... but only time will tell.

my muffler isn't nearly as loud as a full catback but still it's not quiet either.

Jamaica 07-20-2011 11:01 AM

I have the test pipes and the greddy turbo exhaust and I haven't got pulled over yet...

Knock on wood

red6spd 07-20-2011 11:16 AM

Never been stopped in my Z and it is by far the loudest car I have ever had. But I have been stopped a million times in my 99 G20 with a custom Cat-Back, a few times in my 06 Spec-V, and once in my Altima and my Altima was quiet with the Stillen Cat-Back.

ZeeingAround 07-20-2011 12:17 PM

Not yet. It doesn't get loud 'till 4K anyway. Testpipes and CBE. There are too many distracting Harleys for them to pick on my little 370Z. There is a Harley dealership right across from my office.

The problem isn't with aftermarket exhausts itself. The problem is with idiots who drive like Wangan Midnight that also have aftermarket exhausts themselves.

Once a cop see the type of car with aftermarket exhaust that drives like a nut, they profile them like nuts. Be fortunate there isn't much 370z in Orange County. A good number of cops still think they "kinda" look like Porsches.

Red__Zed 07-20-2011 01:33 PM

Never in my z, but I have been pulled over for (stock) exhaust in my wrx.

TacoZ 07-20-2011 01:37 PM

No, they only pull over Hondas with exhausts in the OC.

Synack 07-20-2011 01:42 PM

They only pull over if its a horrible sounding exhaust. Like the kind from Autozone you put on a Civic. "Farrrrrrrrrrrt Farrrrrt Farrrrrt 35mph Boom!"

delusional 07-20-2011 01:52 PM

Our cars look like they have a nice exhaust note to it so cops probably wouldn't pay too much attention to us unlike civics and family cars with loud exhaust. And thats another reason why I love the Berk exhaust. It looks completely stock

vividracing 07-20-2011 02:03 PM

Just don't drive like a moron and you won't get hassled. It's a newer Nissan, not an old Civic. Most cops even in CA aren't too concerned with you :)

Got a ticket for that and another one for "Not Turning at the Curb..." I went to court myself and they both were dropped due to the cop not showing up. Beach cops are the worst, luckily most don't stick around very long in the area past summer..

I've heard of people just having a shop sign off that their exhaust is legal and have gotten the ticket dropped.

PapoZalsa 07-20-2011 06:39 PM

Here in the Republic of VA if is not OEM you can get pull over anytime, get ticketed or a fix ticket one which includes going to court.

racerxj17 07-20-2011 06:43 PM

once for exhaust, dozen plus times for tint (20%) or no front plate. i believe its from me driving home from work around 2 am. no tickets yet :stirthepot:

FL 4Motion 07-20-2011 07:15 PM

nope, and my exhaust is loud as hell. (F.I. non res CBE w/carbon fiber mufflers and LTHs). Then again, I'm in FL. (knocks on wood).

I know, I got the F.I. that you can tell a mile away and with 12" resonator and still a little bit loud, but sweet sound.

ncheung85 07-20-2011 08:15 PM

If you're sticking with stock cats, you should be fine. I got some hfc. Haven't got pull over yet.

A little off subject and you can pm the response if you like? But I'm strongly considering meisterschaft. I been brooding over FI, Meisterschaft or Ark? FI and Ark seem slightly too low on videos but I prefer the tone. Then the meisterschaft seems to be hella loud. So how bad is the Meister???
From what I can get out of the vids? I'm looking for the happy median between all 3. Lol

enkei2k 07-20-2011 09:39 PM

I got pulled over in my 240sx with an HKS Hi Power exhaust, stock everything else.

I was waiting at a red light and see the cop car behind me, right when it turns green and I start moving, BAM! "PULL OVER". FML

went to court, showed them my fix-it ticket and went along my daily life.

TheGreatOne 07-20-2011 10:02 PM

Stock cats with my FI exhaust, nothing, I've actually gotten "the nod" from some cops

I think the Z commands a lot more respect than my old Honda Prelude lol, got so many tickets and pull overs with that thing.

Strangler 07-20-2011 10:52 PM

Motorcycles are like 10x louder than these aftermarket exhausts and they never get pulled over. You should be fine.

^^ I dont agree. Us riders have loud azz exhausts for safety reasons and cops know that too. cars dont need loud azz exhausts.

Ugh, the "loud pipes save lives" Crew is back.

Well it's like anything else in the world of generating revenue...

Everything is contradictory and nothing makes much sense. And 100% of it is not fair by anyone's measure.

Bikes are loud as hell (especially obnoxious Harley's) and they don't even need to "legaly" run catalytics. So is noise the issue? Apparently not. Is smog the issue? Apparently not either. But when it comes to a car... oh hold the phone...

Civics are targeted because of supposed stolen parts and a fart cannon makes for a good "reasonable suspicion" stop. But that's just it.. "reasonable suspicion" doesn't get a cop inside your car or under your hood. Probable cause does. Without a warrant, reasonable suspicion just doesn't cut it but people don't know this so they let the cop pop the hood and search all over the inside of the vehicle by giving consent where none need be given under the protection of your so called 4th Amendment.

Now I understand that the topic of reasonable suspicion vs. probable cause and just what does that fart cannon represent are hotly debated but I am of the opinion that it is NOT the latter. When challenged, the cop will most likely throw a bluff your way and say something like "fine, you hang out while we call the tow truck". Ok... but wait... Most people won't say "ok". They most likely won't ask to see their supervisor in the mean time while waiting for the supposed tow truck to show up and call their bluff. Sometimes I guess it's easier to pay than to play? IDK.

Something to think about. Plus I always record (video) my traffic stops as that tends to change the hearts and minds of some would-be violators in blue.

Props for standing up for yourself and knowing your rights. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't do either of those. One thing though... In some states it's illegal to record police, in others, both parties have to consent to a recording. Check local laws before recording a police officer.

OP, have you decided which exhaust you're going to be ordering? We've got a few that are pretty quiet. Check 'em out

Point well taken and thank you for pointing that out. Wise advice however here in California, there is no expectation of privacy for a public servant in public so it's all good!

conversation ended quickly. :icon17:

got cited when i had my hks dual hi-power ti system in diamond bar. cop said "its too big" (w/e that meant..). when i took it to highway patrol, they signed off on it since it was quiet. cop at the station suggested that it "looked too pretty to be stock" which is why he thinks i was cited for it.

ever since i got the akrapovic system, cops don't give me a second look or tail me anymore :)

JrumMusic 07-22-2011 11:18 AM

I have my ARC EXHAUST <<< very nice! And i have had zero issues. I used to drive a 2001 cavalier with a exhaust and got pulled over lol, but for some reason cops think the my car must NEED to sound like it does.

SPOHN 07-22-2011 11:51 AM

I've never really heard of cops pulling guys over where I live for an exhaust. Loud radio they will in a heartbeat.
