oil change price... it's like, WOW!

okay so i'm about to hit like 3500 miles on my ride. called nissan to make an appointment. i asked them how much was the oil can and they quoted me 120.00 because of the use of ester oil. i was like "wtf" in my mind. but since i have a due bill and can get my first oil change for free, it's all good, but damn!!! hella expensive.

West Covina Nissan quoted me $40.00 for an oil change. I asked one day to see the price difference in doing it myself or taking it to the dealership. $120.00 is rediculous. No one should be paying that much for an oil change unless you're consuming over 15 quarts of oil.

First free oil change would be awesome especially with ester-based. [sigh] that would be nice, but highly doubt it in my case. I'm scheduled for July.

arcticreaver 04-27-2009 02:45 PM

they are claiming that because of the ester based oil, it's freakin' 120.00. this is TOO ridiculous to be believed.

molamann 04-27-2009 03:04 PM

The dealership that sold me the car charges $70 whereas the local Nissan dealership charges $35. However, neither of them had no idea what ester based oil was so I just ended up doing the oil change myself with mobil 1 at 1500 miles. I know it's a bit early for synthetic but what the hell right?

Thems BMW prices there! I'd expect that from an expensive luxury brand, but Nissan? Sounds like they're trying to take you for a ride.

arcticreaver 04-27-2009 03:25 PM

with these prices, i'm not even going to consider my dealer for the major services for my car.

Isn't BMW running that whole "$0" maintenance for its leased vehicles?

But they extended how often they will do an oil change, etc.

I agree that $120 is steep, but West Covina isn't using the right kind of oil for your Z if they're only charging you $40. Nissan Ester Oil (which is recommended for our cars) is $12 a quart, and our engine takes 5 -1/8 qts.

That price sounds correct if you want the dealership to change your oil. This quote is based on using their Nissan Ester based oil, which is $12/quart. That is a very expensive oil. Most OTC synthetics will be more than adequate and cost about half the price of the Nissan oil.

I highly doubt they will offer the Ester based oil in the free oil change. Let us know how it turns out.

already called the dealer and talked to the sales manager today to let them know that i was coming in on thursday and he assured me that it will be free of charge. when i purchased my ride, they told me that i would get a free oil change as a courtesy.

Bobba Booey 04-27-2009 03:58 PM

That's good that they honored the free oil change with the ester oil. What are you plans on future changes? DIY? Oil brand/weight?

ENT-Z 04-27-2009 04:08 PM

Yeah that's high but nowhere near as high as the mercedes i used to have -- it would alternate b/w $250 one year and $500 the next - although you only had to do it once and they also changed other stuff like wipers and air filters...still that always hurt!

actually i already changed my oil at my local mechanic that worked on my cars before, i bought my own 0w-30 mobil 1 just to try it out. engine doesn't have a problem with this type and brand since the engine has been running pretty smooth since.

after this free oil change, i'm going to take it back to my mechanic. charges me only 20 bucks cash to do the oil change and change the oil filter.
