Does this happen to you...

.. when driving your Z??... It seems the majority of times I am driving my Nismo that I'll get challenged to a race. I've had WRXs spooling up behind me waiting for an opportunity to pass, at red lights I've been challenged by Mustangs. Though today took the cake when I pulled up next to a DPW pick-up truck at a red light. When the light turned green, the driver of the DPW pick-up gunned it off the line.

Let me add that I am in the minority age group for owners of Zs. I'm 50+ and always get a chuckle when someone attempts to race me. I don't drive or act like I am looking to race. In fact most of the time I will have my wife in the car with me. Of course I never attempt to oblige them.

So.. have any of you had similar experiences?

Jim

Somberlaine 07-05-2011 08:07 PM

Yep. It happens all the time. I dont even bother. Just this evening I got the same treatment from a guy in a C class. What gives.

SPOHN 07-05-2011 08:13 PM

I had a guy in a Murano do this to me in downtown Atlanta. I guess he was racing himself. But he took off and the very next exit I saw a cop go to pull him over. HA!

SmoothZ 07-05-2011 08:18 PM

Most people give me a thumbsup or a smile, and it's either when I'm alone or with my wife. Rarely do I have anyone challenge me.

VCuomo 07-05-2011 08:25 PM

It's happened to me too many times to count. I can't believe these morons who assume that if you have a fast car you automatically want to race them - especially in evening traffic where you could wipe out a bunch of innocent bystanders. Idiots.

Forum Rule violation! NO talk about street racing....

is anyone actually talking about racing?

SmoothZ 07-05-2011 08:51 PM

I think we're having an intelligent discussion about how the car attracts attention. That's all.

m4a1mustang 07-05-2011 09:00 PM

The Z attracts a lot of attention... I think most people just want to see it get up and go!

Hambone1 07-05-2011 09:01 PM

It happens all the time. In fact, today I took my car in for service, and grabbed an Altima for a loaner, and was kind of spaced out, looked back in my mirror to see a riced out Accord and was kind of wondering why he wasn't trying to goad me into something. Then I remembered the crushing 2.5 badge on the back, and the killer 16's I'm rolling on.

DjSquall 07-05-2011 09:02 PM

This is pretty normal. I get people trying to race me all the time. Just take it as a compliment

m4a1mustang 07-05-2011 09:06 PM

I honestly don't think they are trying to race... I think they are just trying to get you to go. With my Z and my 5.0, I get all these kids in Scions trying to "race" me, but I'm certain they just want to see fast cars go... well.. fast!

I think its kind of a mixed bag to be honest. I've had kids start jawing at me (through my closed window) at the next light in regards to how they "beat me," and others who just give the nod of respect.

I've never had anyone jaw at me about a "win" but I have had the victory hazards a few times. I'd say 80-90% of the time people driving those cars just want to see me accelerate... There's no way some kid in a Scion tC with fart can thinks he can beat a 370Z or 5.0 in a drag race... but I guess I shouldn't put it past some of the typical ricer owners. :/

USMCASA 07-05-2011 09:28 PM

Z is like a bug light for ricers and racers. i don't oblige them

Maybe it's just the demographics here (western WA). See in my experience, some people who drive the Scion tC's, Civics/Si's, etc think they have a rocket ship with wheels attached, or are so uninformed about cars that they think theirs is actually faster. They are the the root cause of the running jokes regarding V-TEC stickers adding 50 bhp per sticker and such

370Z JT 07-05-2011 09:37 PM

I get a lot of people breaking their necks trying to get a look at the Z or I see them looking in their side and rear view mirrors all the time to get a look.

kenchan 07-05-2011 09:40 PM

Yah, I got smoked by a honda Odyssey. Lol

dirtrat 07-05-2011 09:47 PM

Happens to me all of the time! BTW I'm 50 years old so you are not alone. The funny thing is how many cars try and challange me and wouldn't have any chance at all.

TypeOne 07-05-2011 09:49 PM

The only car that I ever had rev on me, was an idiot kid in one of those cheap Kia Forte coupes. Man those things are ugly.

RC 370z 07-05-2011 09:52 PM

i was driving to work the other day, im about 75 yards from the exit to get on the highway and im looking in my rearview mirror and a girl about 17 years old in a beat up gold corolla passed me from behind and gets up right beside me (we both make eye contact for like a second or two) and gives me the "im gonna beat you to the exit stare" so she guns it like she's Danica Patrick coming to the finish line and the poor corolla barely makes it to the exit when her engine blows! hahaha she's on the shoulder now. i just got on the exit like normal and i looked at her and gave her the "SUCKS look" and went to work.

it was a god day, maybe she should have had a better car...:tiphat:

My_third_Z 07-05-2011 10:37 PM

This was years ago, with my first 350z. I was at a red light when a guy in a brand new (still had dealer tags) Mustang pulls up next to me and starts to rev his engine. I don't race on the roads, so I just ignored it. The light turned green and he took off. A couple minutes later I catch up to him at another red light and he had his hood up with all kinds of smoke coming out from the engine. When the light turned green I pulled away like normal. I still get a laugh thinking about it.

ZeeingAround 07-05-2011 10:38 PM

I bet she was 18. ;)

:icon18: now that's some funny right there!

Yup, happens all the time to me. It probably doesn't help that I love in Daytona Beach. :ugh2: BMW 135s, Mitsubishi 3000GTs and Hondas all try their hand at getting off the line down International Speedway Blvd. and I just kenchan on like I didnt even notice!

EazyD 07-05-2011 10:55 PM

Boss 302 Mustang at a red light was trying to line up with me for miles and finally did. His significant other was in the passenger seat. He peeled his wheels and took off - I rolled away with the rest of traffic. They pulled into a Marshall's parking lot just 100 yards up the road probably because she was pissed :D

shumby 07-05-2011 10:56 PM

lol. When i was young and dumb (just dumb now) I had a 3 cly firefly. I would try and race anyone.

Cmike2780 07-05-2011 10:56 PM

It could just be NY drivers are d-bags, but people who drive "ricey" cars always seem to cut me off or want to cut me off while driving on the freeway. I'm not driving "slow" mind you. This use to piss me off, but now I just let it go. Its not worth the trouble. Sometimes I get the opposite reaction with people rolling down their window and asking about the car in the middle of traffic.

Also, is it just me or are fat chicks aggressive drivers. I swear, everytime I see a chick doing 90 in the right lane, she's almost always the same size as her car (usually a compact car or small SUV).

christian370z 07-06-2011 12:12 AM

I rarely ever have anyone trying to get a race going, even ricey drivers. Maybe seeing a younger person driving doesn't beckon hooligans who want to "go." I had more people trying to race when I had my modified Saab haha, that car definitely would catch some people by surprise.

buddahson 07-06-2011 12:55 AM

I actually had a guy and his wife, both in their late fifties pull up next to me the other day. They were in an SL65 V12 biturbo. Light turned green and I got off the line a little spiritedly. I guess the old guy was upset I was ahead of him, I heard those turbos spool and he shot past like I was standing still. Funny a guy in a ~$150k car with 600hp felt he had to prove something. I'm not complaining though I love it when people drive cars like they were designed.

DOOMMONKEY777 07-06-2011 02:18 AM

one day i was cruising on the highway, so i went too far decided to take and exit and twist around, where i pulled up next to a red Corvet on a red light. opened my pass. window to say "Hey man that's a nice ride u got there" and gave him a thumbs up:tup: he looked at my car then at me and drove off not saying anything. "..ok... well f**k u, ill burn ur piece of sh!t anyday u hear???"
I dont think he heard me:p

mikeSS 07-06-2011 02:36 AM

be happy people want to race you. that means you have a car worth while

USMCASA 07-06-2011 07:05 AM

and look at it this way, on the bright side atleast they aren't spitting on your car lol

V8Killer 07-06-2011 09:17 AM

Just from my experience I get a lot of looks b/c where I am located is near many Marine Corps bases. Mainly you see mustangs and camaros. A few ricer cars here and there but mainly the muscle car guys. My girlfriend laughs a lot when she rides with me b/c she is always catching people looking at my car as I can't see them when I am paying attention to the road. Honestly I feel that the guys who are stock in the v8's usually will make a slow pass near me b/c well I am the only one in a 50 mile radius that owns one so they are not sure what the car is capable of. The one's that do offer a little something to the table ya they want to play. I see a few 350's and I'll give them the Z wave, or a quick flip of the lights and they will respond back. V-tech's always want to play and it's when they annoy me that I shut them down. When I get out of the car or when I get in my car in a parking lot is when I really catch people looking. It's funny too when you got the hot milf staring at you as she is loading her car up with groceries and her kids are running around the car playing. I love my car to death and that feeling of people looking at you, ya it's always there.

poorazn 07-06-2011 09:26 AM

I'm still in my break in period, so most of the looks i get are probably "GTFO of the way" looks. hehe

Strange as this may sound, I got more "race" looks and challenges when i first got my Corolla S back in 2001, even though the "S" models at the time merely meant I got black interior with red gauges. uhhhh 110HP stock, but I got 43 MPG!

I couldn't have said it better myself.

BennytheBlade 07-06-2011 09:32 AM

Came up to a light that had been green a while and kick the car out of gear. Synchro rev match kicked up the rpms and the guy next to me was in a 6.0 gto and I guess he thought it was "go time".

Cell 07-06-2011 09:45 AM

I haven't had anyone try to race me. I have had ricers pull up next to me and told me I have a nice car but never a race.

Good 'ole SRM. Sometimes it can unintentionally make you look like a d-bag. :bowrofl:

lol....funny cause its true.

The other day a sweet S4 was at a light as I came up behind him, downshifted so I guess he heard my exhaust and he revved his a bit which was deep and throaty sounding.

Light turned green and he just gave a wave and turned off as I went straight...see thats cool, just car admiration.
