Son's newly bought 09 370Z 6MT
Just bought my son an 09 370 6MT with 6,000 miles on it for $26,400. Good deal, I think. Wife and I own an 07 G35S6MT.
A few questions. 1) Should I purchase an extended warranty? I know there is usually a resounding "no" on this. But car is near end of basic 3 year manufacturer coverage because of car's age, not miles. I know "drive train" warranty is still in force up to 5 years, but extended warranty seems to cover more issues. And my son lives in Florida, we live in Brooklyn. This is his 1st car. Don't trust mechanics dealing with a young driver. 2) No fog lights on the 370Z? 3) Noticed the engine temperature issue on this forum but drove in stop and go for 45 minutes in 85 degrees yesterday and the temp was solid and cool. Is there something else I should be looking for? |
Is he 16? If so then you have other problems you will need to worry about. This is a lot of car for a new driver.

No, we don't have any fog lights, but our high beams are literally two small suns attached to the front of the car. And oil temperature isn't an issue unless you are driving fairly hard or driving "spirited" in exceptionally hot weather. I've almost had my car for two years now and I've never had an issue. |
No, he's not 16. He's nearly 18. LOL, but he's very responsible, excellent student, superb driver, natural athlete (tennis), outstanding peripheral vision, quick, calm reflexes. Wife feels safer with him behind wheel than she does with me. He's ben driving my G since he was 16
And yeah, it's the kind of car I would drive if I were a teen. As it was, I had an orange 2002 BMW in 1970. Cost $2,900 hundred then but so did college. Yep, a certifiable geezer. Learned to drive as a cabbie in NYC when I was 19. Still aggressive after all these years. |

most of those who purchased it wille nd up feeling it was a waste of money. and then tehre are a few who did not buy it and wish they did. even fewer who are happy they did. So really what im saying is, no one can tell you if you SHOUlD, or if you would NEED it. Its basically a gamble everytime. But, if its one of those things that just simply gives you peace of mind for 500$ then just do it. Peace of mind is worth alot more than that. If you feel like having it still wont give you peace of mind then its probably not worth it. Oil temps is one of those things just keep an eye on it. Nothing to be worried about, but doesnt hurt. |
Superb driver?....outstanding peripheral vision?... Wow. I really hope your just trolling, because there is no such thing as a responsible 18 year old when you put him behind the wheel of sports car. It's one thing when he's driving with his Mom holding his hand, another when he's alone or with a girl/guy.

when i was in the car with my parents i was the 80 year old man driving his buick but as soon as they were gone it was like paul walker got behind the wheel all of a sudden. :eekdance: people mature differently though im only 21 (and for all the haters yes i bought The Z myself went to work at 17 and started saving my pennies) i dont drive anywhere near like i used to just kinda cruise around in the Z :driving: |
i bought my 2011 base metiallic Z when i was 21 (turning 22 the following month, been saver my whole life, never really spent money at will, always kept ir in check but i never really knew what i was saving for... i was just...saving... until someone metioned to me...hey what about a new car... so i started researching the Different cars.... Nissan was on of the dead last companies on my list if at all.... i just happen to stumble across the site when searching for other options, decided heck why not.... and clicked on the coupe section of the site....thought to myself ... "DO MY EYES DECIEVE ME?!?!" The Z was there staring at me in the face saying "come on... you know you want me.... " researched it tirelessly for the next month, and almost a month later... Bought my Z... negoiated a grand off the asking price, and put down 12,000 ontop my trade in )6500 they gave me)
Dont regret it one bit.... now back to saving |
Your an awesome dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish the best of luck to you and your son, but you better make sure he is ready for a car like that. My first car had 90hp and I was an animal with it LOL, never crashed but I drove like a 17 year old. But anyway this is America and you can do whatever you want. Back on topic, the oil temp is not a huge issue but if your son starts to mod the car or ever tracks it you guys might want to invest in an oil cooler.

I had my Z when I was 18 and I never did anything stupid in it. I would still have it today if someone had not pulled out in front of me. some kids are more mature than others the gamble is that you never know until you give them the chance.

I'm 18 and most of the time I drive calm unless there is no one around because taking corners in this car is a sh!t load of fun, but my car does have oil temp issues even during a cruise in 70 degree weather so I guess you just need to see if it's one of those that needs an oil cooler for DD.
