Here in Iowa your registration is based on value and the weight of the car. For the first nine (used to be 7) years it drops very little. After 9 years it starts dropping quite a bit until after about 12 years you reach a minimum of $35 per year. Also when you buy a car here, you pay a 5% road use tax on the purchase price. I paid just over $300 when I renewed last December.

In PA as stated above the State reg is 36 bucks, plate is one time, annual inspection runs from 20-30 bucks and it just depends which emission test you get, I hear philly is expensive, regular emissions runs 30-40 bucks...or Indiana county FTW= no emissions, and working at a car dealer=free inspection=winning, cant believe the fees in some of these states! BTW I hate living here, but hell if Im moving to some of those states...

Fayette county= no emissions either. :D

On the personalized plates in Pa. You pay $44.00 for the plate once. That plate is yours until you give it up. Then $36.00 for registration every year.

Ideal solution is do what I do: Retire and winter in Florida! No more dark cold winters in Greensburg! Our $36.00 annual PA registration fee is incredibly modest and every so often there is a push on to increase it to bring it more in line with other states. But the political pressures prevent any increase. I actually even avoided the emissions inspection last year, as I drove my Z fewer miles than was required for the inspection.

Somewhat related / mildy interesting story. A friend of ours moved to Japan recently as his wife got a job there. He flew back into town this past weekend, mostly for one reason.

To renew his drivers license.

Apparently the cost to get your license there is your Age X 100USD. He's almost 40 so it was cheaper for him to fly to the US and back than to get his license there.

Most of that money goes to other stuff though. Regardless of what state, they get it from you some how. If not all through your tags, it's through taxes, other fee's, etc.
